I'm rooting against the Pirates to make the playoffs. They were really set up well to be buyers at the deadline and they didn't pull the trigger. Not saying they had to overpay for a Red Sox player, but most of their young talent is lined up, and they owed it to their fans to play for the division title.

Wow, can't believe the luck, planned and booked a road trip 3 months ago which included a visit to Pittsburg to catch a Sox game, and get to witness the Castillo debut first hand. Can't wait. I'll share what I can.

Random thought: Mookie Betts is so good that he makes Xander better.

I sort of agree about them owing it to their fans but they were my potential trade target binky so I'm not 100% sure my emotions don't influence that. On a semi-related topic, is the whole idea of playing the spoiler overrated and crybaby spitefulness? With the Yankees I understand it because they are our feud (with the Rays closing the gap) but just playing to spoil things for another team seems stupid to me.

Ranaudo gives up two bombs tonight. 10 in 32 1/3 innings. Was hoping for better from him.

There's that erratic throwing arm the Mookie scouting reports mentioned.

He needs to get traded to a pitchers park. Do you want Boo-boo or Yogi? Reminds me.. Narlins stole Jarred Cosart from Houston. Marisnick has a chance to help Houston, but he hasn't been any help yet and was one of those guys with Miami that the raw talent was always being rated more than any actual results he put on the field. I thought they did great getting a potential top of the order guy in Cosart for a (to me) high bust player like Marisnick. Marlins will have a full rotation back next season with Hernandez and needs a 2b. solano isn't any answer and Jones isn't at 1b either. Wonder if Boston could send them 1-2 of the SP from the Pawsox, then give them Marrero so they could slide Hechaverra over from SS to play 2nd for Cosart? He could be a #2 for the Sox and not require paying out 80-100m, under control for 5 more years to boot.

He shows minimal promise. Might not even be a major leaguer honestly

Koji may have lost his magic splitter but he can still make hitters look pretty silly with his 88 mph fastball.

Five doubles, 7 hits total. Zero runs. Seems hard to do that. Seems like in any other year in the past decade, we would had a reasonable chance of winning that game 5-4. Not saying this is a good team, but there does seem to be a lot of bad luck as well.

We were zero for 10 with RISP! How does that happen?
This offense is brutally ugly to watch.

I still like the other young pitchers better, but actually liked Renaudo's stuff better than some previous games which had better results. Anyone else see it that way? He seemed to throw more curves, and get good movement on them, with some down in the zone, mixed in some changeups, even to righties.. Still threw straight fastballs up in the zone at 91-2 which look very hittable, but I did seem to see more 2 seam movement on some pitches. If he could get an uptick in velocity to first half 2013, there might be something here, but then again there are too many talents that may be better.

Don't forget he is pitching deep into the season for the first time. He has a lot of work to do, but I would not give up on him. Besides, we really don't much for starting pitching. They have to make some good decisions this off season in that department, scary. BTW, Peavy pitched another gem . Those who have seen him say he is pitching with more zip to his pitches than when he was here.

Random thought: Red Sox are 9th in pitching fWAR and 19th in offensive fWAR and have the 5th worst record in all of MLB. How is that possible? Just bad luck?

Random thought: Red Sox are 9th in pitching fWAR and 19th in offensive fWAR and have the 5th worst record in all of MLB. How is that possible? Just bad luck? They've been almost exactly in the middle of the pack in the AL by most pitching metrics and have played good defense, but rank 14/15 in wOBA, wRC+ and BsR. We're deadlast in slugging. Somewhat interestingly, we're also last in swing% and z-swing%, yet first in zone% (meaning we see the highest rate of strikes thrown yet have the lowest rate of swinging at strikes). The bad luck has been from injuries and regression from nearly everyone performing terrifically last year and taking significant steps backwards in 2014. You also need to keep in mind the young guys we slotted into everyday roles who struggled to perform close to their projected levels (JBJ, Bogaerts). The team BABIP is slightly below average, but it's still a fairly normal .295.

Their solid position player fWAR is driven by the third-best defensive marks in the league. Offensively, they rank just 23rd-best on a park-adjusted basis, which sounds about right. They rank ninth in FIP-WAR but just fourteenth in RA9-WAR, which is caused by a combination of poor sequencing (which is usually just bad luck) and poor results on balls in play (looks to be caused by some combination of inadequate park adjustments and just plain ol' bad luck). Another contributing factor is that the Red Sox have played the fifth most innings in the league, which contributes slightly to higher counting stats like WAR.
