Nick Cafardo reported that Yasmani Tomas could command 100 million in free agency, and the Red Sox are interested, my question is- smart move, or huge mistake? He never hit nearly as well as Cespedes, Abreu, Puig, or even Castillo in serie nacional, and won't be athletic enough to stay in center field in the big leagues. However, he has huge raw power (70 on the 20-80 scale), is a decent athlete and outfielder who is only 23 years old. Thoughts?

Why on earth would we waste money that could be spent on serious needs like a pitcher or 3rd baseman or catcher on another outfielder, bringing the count to 7 at the MLB.level not even counting JBJ?

Just stating what was reported. Also, being 23 it is investment in the future, and theres nothing wrong with gathering assets, if even for potential trades especially considering the amount of money the Red Sox have to work with this offseason

Also free agent signings are not really assets, as you pay market value

If he has that kind of power, could he shift to 1B? Maybe not the best sales pitch, but major power is extremely hard to find.

Also any talented player under a contract is a valuable asset regardless of market value

Also any talented player under a contract is a valuable asset regardless of market value Uhh, no. Is Albert Pujols an asset? Is Josh Hamilton an asset? An assst is a player with surplus value. You're talking about trading him, well if the Red Sox sign him, that means, barring weird circumstances, no other team was willing to sign him for as many $ so his trade value is essentially 0. Unless you eat money of course, which also takes away from your ability to acquire players at positions of need

Semantic issue-- asset can both be defined as "something which is valuable (opposite of liability)" (which is how he uses the word in that second paragraph) but also "something you control (which may be of little or negative value)" (which is how I think you're using it).

The only scenario in which it makes sense to sign Tomas, given their wealth of OF options, is if the Red Sox think the market is significantly undervaluing him. However, given the rumors of nine-figure deals, it is unlikely he'll come at a cheap enough price for that to be the case.

Save the money for yoan moncada (if they ever find him). Slow bat speeds worry me at the major league level

Power is something we lack as a whole and I don't think we need a catcher between Vasquez and Swihart. Speaking of catchers, remember when Texas three and wound up acquiring Gerald Laird?

He has real power and room for nutrition/workout/ age based improvements.
He would be a year of lf/1b backup and insurance and then Cespedes/Napoli/Victorino replacement.
I think 100 sounds very high to me.
Castillo money is probably more like what it will take.

Power is something we lack as a whole and I don't think we need a catcher between Vasquez and Swihart. Speaking of catchers, remember. when Texas three and wound up acquiring Gerald Laird? Uh where to start? First, we have great pitching depth, but lack front of the rotation starters. None of our starters can be reasonably counted on to be above average next year. This is much differenr from the outfield, where we have 6 starting quality MLB outfielders for next year and already need to get rid of one. Considering that we have huge holes at the top of the rotation and 3B, signing another outfielder is possibly the dumbest thing we could do, as we will either skimp out on starters or 3B if we don't sign him. I also think we need a catcher as we shouldn't make the same mistake we did with Bradley with Vazquez. Second, we do not have a "need for power". We have a need for scoring runs, and it doesn't matter how we do it, through power or OBP. But Corner outfielder is the place where we least need power and OBP, since we already have lots of outfielders who can produce runs well. Spending money that could be spent on someone like Sandoval on this guy is crazy

god, not that it matters but that trot on the third home run in the video... if that was against David Price or someone on the Rays they would have had a conniption.

Acquiring Tomas makes sense if they think they can get him for a price below what his talent would merit normally because of the lack of info on him. The surplus of outfielders doesn't matter, if you see an upgrade to not make it just because you already have depth there makes no rational sense. It doesn't matter what position a player is at, the depth can be used to acquire talent at positions of need, even if it isn't necessarily Tomas being traded. By your logic having Mookie Betts on the roster isn't valuable because he is blocked at every position he plays

But Corner outfielder is the place where we least need power and OBP, since we already have lots of outfielders who can produce runs well. Spending money that could be spent on someone like Sandoval on this guy is crazy This isn't exactly true. The outfield looks crowded but in fact you have a free agent left fielder who is likely to be traded or lost via free agency in Cespedes. You have a CF in Rusney Castillo who nobody quite knows what to expect, but the Sox are committed to him so he'll be the CF. You have Mookie Betts who could wind up in the infield or on another team if the Red Sox trade him for a Cole Hamels or somebody like that. Behind them you have Bradley who can't hit his way out of a paper bag, Victorino who has been injured most of the past few years and Allen Craig who looks like a guy who'll never be what he once was. And there's Nava who either winds up on another team or on the bench as he didn't show enough power this year to be a starting LF, and of course he can't hit lefties. So yeah, you have numbers and a lot of possibilities, but you have so few certainties. Tomas will probably need minor league seasoning. This isn't an issue for the Sox. Most likely Tomas would wind up in LF for 2016 and beyond. They're most likely losing Cespedes and Napoli after the 2015 season so it's not a bad thing to have a good young power hitter coming up behind Cespedes. The real question is will Tomas be worth what he's getting on the open market and how good is he? That's the real questions, not if the Sox can use him or not.
