Interested in Zobrist as a FA in 2015?

The guy stays healthy, gives a ton of positional flexibility, may not get a QO and might be amenable to a Victorino type short term overpay deal. He is a switch hitter putting up consistently solid WAR numbers every year, over 5.0 the last 4 years in a row. And he might even be a decent candidate to play 3rd base. If for some reason we come up with a better solution at 3rd he can always be moved to another slot. He draws a lot of walks and is a valuable guy on any team. www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=7435&position=2B/OFI think even the Rays give him QO but we could sign him and trade an OF for some value. He's played a lot of games at SS so if he can play there he should be able to handle 3rd. He is aging a little but he's got some speed and should age well. Any interest? Worth a sign even with the loss of a pick?

While I like zobrist, the Rays have a 2015 option on him for a shade more than 7.5 million. I would be surprised if they do not exercise. I also do not view him as 3B. His splits as a LH hitter would look great for the Red Sox on a short term contract starting 2016 (when he will be 34).

Love Zobrist and what he brings to a team. But, for the money, I'd go with Z-lite, Brock Holt.

I would be interested, but hes not going to be a FA, the Rays will pick up his option.
And to the pick question, I think people are severely overrating draft picks. A second round pick should not even be a factor when deciding whether or not to sign a player of Zobrist's caliber. A first round pick shouldn't be one either if we're deciding whether or not to sign him next year

To be fair, a high second-round pick is not that different from the late first-round picks that the Red Sox usually have. I agree that the idea that you should never sign a QO player is wrong, but it's certainly something you throw into the equation.

No way the Rays don't pick up his option. He's still one of the great bargains in the game.

I was reviewing the fangraphs FA position player leader board and it doesn't note player options. My bad. I do like this listing though. It gives a good overview of the situation except for the player option considerations: www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2014&month=0&season1=2014&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=2041,2113,3376,1698,4616,3448,1556,746,1551,3707,7399,1534,1945,1904,8027,3035,1617,934,7619,1935,4054,1443,88,3797,4418,395,1429,8001,2234,166,1417,1849,7435,5986,1830,4962,4251,3336,3692,4720,4704,1002,5409,4022,768,2434,4400,1845,6141,1926,1702,1260,4885,847,2103,3882,2140,3255,9893,2197,8347,945,13075,5310,1534,731,2161,5930,2090,6201,1101,7399,319,818,607,393,8610

They would have traded him if he were a FA.
