A few years ago there was rule change that prevented a team from receiving a compensatory amateur pick if they traded for a player mid year and that player was in his walk year. If that free agent signs with another team the following year does the acquiring team forfeit their first round pick in the amateur draft?

negative ghost-writer. The rule is that a player who is traded can not be offered a Qualifying Offer, by his new team, therefore he has no pick attached for him either way.

Thanks Vet. Am I right in assuming that based on your response if the Sox were to sign Miller or Lester as free agents they would not surrender any picks in the amateur draft?

negative ghost-writer. The rule is that a player who is traded can not be offered a Qualifying Offer, by his new team, therefore he has no pick attached for him either way. To be clear, it depends on when the player is traded. Any in-season trade means no pick attached. If the trade happens between seasons, with the player spending the entire year with the team he's traded to and he becomes a free-agent after that, the QO and a pick come into play.

Let's get at the heart of this to answer the question more fully.
In order to receive draft pick compensation for a departing free agent, a team must extend that player a qualifying offer. A qualifying offer is a one-year deal for the average of the top 125 salaries. This year, it'll be something like $15M.
Also, a team signing a player who has turned down a qualifying offer must give up a draft pick. (There are rules about how this works I won't go into unless you don't know those as well.)
However, a team cannot make a qualifying offer to a player that it acquired during that season. As a result, players like Lester and Miller cannot be extended qualifying offers. Thus, there will be no draft pick in play for either.
Got it?

Ditto for players signed as FA during the season, ie. any guy who waits till after opening day to sign.
