If the salary for Gregerson was 3/20, yes I would have preferred Gregerson because it's a lower AAV and he's 9 years younger. Of course it's fair to argue that there is no guarantee that Gregerson would sign for 3/20 and had they waited, Uehara likely would not have been available for 2/18. How about we just go with Alex Wilson for $500k instead? I can't tell if this is a joke.

Ok, it wasn't entirely clear. I agree with Hatfield's assessment that Koji is superior but Gregerson is a good pitcher, too. He's never had an ERA+ of less than 114*it's 145 over the last four years), gets swings and misses and doesn't walk batters. He's not Koji, but he's certainly a top-25 overall reliever and probably top 10. Preferring Gregerson at a lesser AAV than Uehara got is a totally legitimate opinion.

I just don't think a couple million is going to make or break us or really affect any other possible decision made this season or next.

That's easy to say when it isn't your couple million. Anyhow, given the age gap it's possible (greater than 30% chance, at least) that Gregerson will outpitch Uehara over the next two years outright.

Yes, I know. But there would be less high fives. Or maybe it goes back to the Sox not likely to go more than 2 years for a relief pitcher. I wouldn't be surprised if Gregerson got 4/30-4/36. Plus, they took a sure signing in Koji instead of risking a bidding war or the possibility he doesn't want to go to Boston. You can't really judge these things in a vacuum.
