Jon Heyman ?@jonheymancbs 3m3 minutes ago Miami, FL donaldson will receive $4.3M (he sought $5.725M). big arb loss since he has 3 arb yrs left, and salary affects future 4 Donaldson's to 1 Pablo Sandoval. Great move by the blue jays One cost a 3rd round pick, one cost a package of players and prospects.

Better career/HOF case: Giambi or McGwire?

Better career/HOF case: Giambi or McGwire? McGwire. 3 consecutive world series appearances, with 1 win. Giambi has the MVP, while McGwire had a gold glove. McGwire put up more home runs and almost the same number of RBIs in a few seasons less (in terms of GP). Just watching the two, I always thought McGwire was more feared. The steroids thing will ruin this debate, but in terms of stats and watching them both play, I think McGwire is well beyond Giambi in terms of what I think is a Hall of Famer.

Better career/HOF case: Giambi or McGwire? Depends on what you mean by "better". I think McGwire is slightly more qualified, but Giambi's case will get more traction with the voters.

Putting aside the steroids part, it would be the classic longevity (quantity) vs quality debate.

I had not realized, but McGwire's career OBP was .394.
Now, he also had 6 seasons w/ double-digit IBBs, but still, he was over a .400 OBP seven times. I'd completely forgotten just how much of an offensive force he was.
By the way, IIRC, the Gold Glove he did get was viewed as a joke at the time, like not quite as bad as when Palmeiro won while mostly DH'ing, but close. I could be wrong though.

Jim Bowden put out his offseason report card. Entertaining 5 minute read, a refresher on all the moves if nothing more.

Better career/HOF case: Giambi or McGwire? Depends on what you mean by "better". I think McGwire is slightly more qualified, but Giambi's case will get more traction with the voters. I was going more for who was the better player - not trying to figure out what HOF voters might do based on their usual preference. You really think Giambi's case will get more traction? I think they are really close in terms of their qualifications - I'd probably have both out, along with McGriff, but I very much see the case for all three. But Giambi was as much a face of the steroid era as McGwire. He was a big sweaty dude putting up absurd offensive seasons in 2000-01, and his decline coincided with testing. Of course, testing coincided with him hitting his 30's, but voters are still going to point to that. I wouldn't be surprised if he falls off the ballot to be honest. McGwire's rate stats are helped some by the fact he didn't have a decline phase. He went from excellent to finished in a calendar year. At 37, Giambi's career OBP was .408, but he was still a reasonably productive player as a part-timer for four more years. Still, McGwire's career slugging is huge, eighth all-time. Looking at them closely, I think I do have to put McGwire a tad ahead of Giambi, but I do think Giambi's three-year stretch from 2000 to 2002 was pretty remarkable, better than any stretch McGwire put together. For what it's worth, Giambi really was a butcher at first and it hurts his career value.
