Interesting tweet from somebody I recently saw. Relative to Sheilds, no free agent has ever signed a deal for more than $50m after February 1st.

Bryce Brentz is a better player than Dayan Viciedo. Did you see my previous post? Interesting tweet from somebody I recently saw. Relative to Sheilds, no free agent has ever signed a deal for more than $50m after February 1st. It is pretty crazy. But while Shields is a good (but far from elite) pitcher, his age makes him a pretty risky long term commitment. If he's set on 4+ years, I'd top out around $75 million.

Buster Olney ?@buster_ESPN 5m5 minutes ago Execs believe Shields increasingly boxed in by market alternatives, as teams evaluate their options. es.pn/1zJZieQ News/notes/links From the public section: But that leverage is now gone, and Shields is in the worst possible spot of any free agent, when most teams are finished spending for the winter and more readily identify reasons to dismiss an available player. In Shields' case, the loudest concerns are about his age (33), his heavy workloads (eight straight seasons of 203 or more innings pitched), his need for a ballpark that forgives his tendency to surrender fly balls to left-center field; his home games have been in the pitcher-friendly Tropicana Field and Kauffmann Stadium, and he has a career ERA of 5.42 in Fenway Park.
The longer a premium free agent like Shields remains unsigned, the more his negotiating strategy and leverage position gets picked apart. As we move into February, some executives have become convinced that while Shields was an interesting alternative on Dec. 9, he is now hurt by looming market alternatives.
“If you’re in a position where you’ve got money to spend, would you rather jump at Shields, or wait?”

Yankee ZIPS. LOL, projected most innings, Kuroda. I guess the Yankees are branching into Japan. Second most projected innings Tanaka.Raise your hand if you think Tanaka will give them 167 innings before his arm falls off. The ststs are actually pretty optimistic. Their top three position players are all expected to have significant offensive improvement in spite of the fact that they are all in age declination territory. www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2015-zips-projections-new-york-yankees/

Bryce Brentz is a better player than Dayan Viciedo.
And yet Brentz couldn't crack our outfield last year - an outfield that was really, really bad. Mind you, I say this as someone who likes Brentz, but as what he is - A fourth outfielder/platoon player.

He would have but was hurt when needed.

He would have but was hurt when needed. For the second year in a row. Brentz probably has the most beautiful swing in the whole organization. Tight swing path, quick wrists, short uppercut. He just misses with that swing too often.

It only took a few games at the end of last season for the league to figure him out. They set him up so that they could feed him breaking stuff outside and he was changing the airflow around the plate, but making little contact. He's not there yet. Add: Best analysis of Shields' worth, and his potential landing spot, that I've seen yet, From Tony Blengino at FanGraphs. A good quote, and a real cautionary note: Caveat emptor...

The Red Sox 40 man crunch is a dream come true for other teams.

If those other teams dream of players who walk more guys than they strike out in their seventh year in the minors...
Britton's development (or lack thereof) is the reason I'm ok with losing Jason Garcia in the Rule 5. A proper minor league development structure is important. Putting guys on the 40-man roster when they are nowhere near contributing hurts both the team and the player.

Britton's development (or lack thereof) is the reason I'm ok with losing Jason Garcia in the Rule 5. A proper minor league development structure is important. Putting guys on the 40-man roster when they are nowhere near contributing hurts both the team and the player. Well, FWIW, he was a top 100 prospect in BA the offseason they put him on the 40. Then he went to Salem and went 1-13 with a near-7.00 ERA. That said, that's a pretty good comp of the situation, with a guy coming off of TJ with a limited workload pumping the gun, except that Britton got more work in Greenville and seemed like he knew where the ball was going, strangely putting up what was by far his best walk rate of his career in 2010 in A-ball. Looks like he may have been getting help from Sally hitters expanding the zone, in hindsight, as he's never come close to that walk rate again. He's had plenty of time to develop. He could turn into a useful middle reliever, but I doubt he becomes more than that. The one thing I do wonder is if they should have given him the sink-or-swim call up a little earlier last year to see what they had, maybe giving him some innings in August too.

Note that current friends Mike McCarthy and Jorge Marban play for Perth (but weren't the victims of the bombs there).

I think Shields should sign with San Diego. He would do well in that park and I think he lives in that area. And he could help San Diego make that division interesting this year.
