Trade Cespedes & Ranaudo to the Mariners to acquire Iwakuma.
Trade Marrero, Cecchini/Middlebrooks, Coyle & Webster for Cole Hamels.
Would be willing to give up Johnson or Kelly if necessary in either of these deals. Keeping Owens.
Sign Chase Headley for 3 / 45 mill
Starting Rotation 1. Hamels 2. Iwakuma 3. Buchholz 4. Kelly 5. Owens/Wright/De La Rosa
BP 1. Tazawa 2. Uehara 3. Layne 4. Mujica 5. De La Rosa/Wright 6. Barnes 7. Workman
Starting Lineup 1. RF Betts 2. CF Castillo 3. 2B Pedroia 4. DH Ortiz 5. 1B Napoli 6. 3B Headley 7. SS Bogaerts 8. LF Craig 9. C Vazquez You could maybe switch Castillo and Bogaerts, or slide Craig up if he's looking better.
Bench Nava, OF/1B Holt, IF/OF Weeks, IF Ross, C
Bonus baby: Sign Yoan Moncada for $55-60 million.
No idea if those trades or the Headley contract would be accepted but a man can dream.

So with Heyward off the table I would pursue Sandoval and change my lineup to... 1. Betts, RF 2. Pedroia, 2B 3. Ortiz, DH 4. Cespedes, LF 5. Napoli, 1B 6. Sandoval, 3B 7. Bogaerts, SS 8. Castro, C 9. Castillo, CF So Vasquez goes to the bench or to Pawtucket? Hate to keep picking on you as you're a newbie, but, I suppose, as the thread title says "Choose your own adventure".

Step one: give Jon Lester all of the money.
Step two: acquire another in a trade involving Cespedes, either directly or more likely flipping him to a third team for pieces. I'm going to avoid specifics here because I think it's pointless, but ideally it would be Hamels for Owens + stuff even though realistically I'd probably have to hold my nose and pay Swihart + stuff. That, or Samardzija for a lesser price. Again I think the specifics here are pointless but broadly I'd trade for a starter and I'd try to use Cespedes in that trade.
Step three: Having spent all the money on pitching I'd try to go cheap on a decent third baseman. Let's say Jed Lowrie for the Ben Cherington (Qualifying Offer minus ~10%) X three years special; 3/45 or so.
Step four: I guess you need a backup catcher for Vasquez so sign whoever, I don't care.
C Vasquez 1B Napoli 2B Pedroia SS Bogaerts 3B Lowrie RF Betts CF Castillo LF Craig/Nava DH Ortiz
SP1 Lester SP2 Hamels (or Samardzija, or someone else) SP3 Buchholz SP4 Kelly SP5 RDLR/Barnes/Webster
RP1 RDLR/Barnes/Webster RP2 RDLR/Barnes/Webster RP3 Tazawa RP4 Mujica RP5 Uehara RP6 Wright
(might need to find some other bullpen pieces if any of the young pitchers go in trade.)
BN Victorino (not necessarily him but I gotta put one of Craig/Nava/Vic on the bench) BN Holt BN Backup catcher BN Ideally a lefty 4C guy, as you don't really need a SS on the bench with Bogaerts/Lowrie/Holt on the roster, but it'll probably end up being some dumb SS/Utl guy.

Sign Lester, Jon to a 6/140 contract (23.33m per)
Sign Scherzer, Max to a 7/175 contract (25m per)
Sign Miller, Andrew to a 4/26 contract (6.5m per)
Trade Victorino and Webster/Barnes and Rijo+ 5m to Kansas city for Wade Davis KC needs an outfielder to replace Aoki, Victorino fits their defense and base running style. Wade Davis is a stud reliever who's getting expensive for a team like KC (7m, 8m and 10m team options upcoming). In Barnes/Webster they may see a possible starter or power bullpen arm perhaps in the Davis mold... Webster may remind them of Davis before they acquired him. Rijo is a lower level speed/defense type prospect. They seem to have built their success off of power bullpen arms, speed and defense.
Re-sign Ross to a 1/3m contract I don't think there is a real need for a LHH catcher to backup Vazquez. I'd much prefer the mentor and guy who can handle the pitching staff. It's not like there is a great LH bat to be had who is also good with the pitching staff.
I would not sign a Sandoval (6/100) or a Headley (3-4 years at 15+ per) or a Hanley (100m +) unless their tags come way down from where they are being reported. That means you are in a tough spot at 3b, but unfortunately, you can't always have everything.
Rotation:
Scherzer Lester Buchhoz Kelly De La Rosa/Webster
Bullpen:
1. Koji 2. Miller (I think he can close) 3. Davis (he may also be ale to close) 4. Tazawa 5. Mujica 6. Layne 7. Workman
Line up:
1. Betts (Rf) 2. Pedroia (2b) 3. Ortiz (dh) 4. Napoli (1b) 5. Cespedes (lf) 6. Castillo (cf) 7. Bogaerts (ss) 8. Cecchini (3b) **Probably Middlebrooks to start then hopefully Cecchini and his LHB by June 9. Vazquez (c)
Bench
1. Holt (super util) 2. Nava (LHB OF/1b) 3. Craig (OF/DH) 4. Ross (C)
No chance they sign both Lester and Scherzer and Lester would have to sign first before you could give Max 7 years, but this is what I would do or try to do.... lineup is too right handed and there's no speed element on the bench. Have a great top of the rotation and a great bullpen with a lot of insurance should Koji falter. This will put them into the luxury tax, but I don't think that should be an issue for the team this year.

The pitching would be unreal in that scenario. I'd suggest finding a 3B through the trade market as well.

I think I would keep it pretty simple.
Re-sign Jon Lester (shocking I know!). 6 years $140 million with an obtainable $20 million option based on innings pitched over the last two years of the deal.
Bring back Andrew Miller for four years and $8 million/year. This is something I'd like to see happen, but can live without if budget constraints get in the way. Then they'd have to find another late inning lefty.
Re-sign Badenhop. Look into Hochevar as a possible relief addition, too.
Sign Hanley Ramirez to a five year $100 million deal to play 3b or LF depending upon what is needed - for now 3b.
Deal Cespedes to Seattle for Iwakuma.
This doesn't solve the lack of lefty production on the Red Sox, but I think Hanley Ramirez would be the best hitting 3b on the market and he might be able to shift over to LF if need be down the road.
I think that eventually Swihart will crack the lineup come midseason which could place another lefty bat into the lineup.
Nava and Craig can platoon to start the season or if Victorino is completely healthy he could be a candidate to start or be dealt. Perhaps Cecchini winds up in LF and if he forces his way up to Boston with his bat, he gets a look in LF and would be another lefty hitting candidate?
To start the season:
Betts LF Pedroia 2B Ramirez 3B Ortiz DH Napoli 1B Bogaerts SS Victorino RF (or a LF Nava/Craig platoon or Cecchini with Betts in RF) Castillo CF Vazquez C (replaced by Swihart in midseason perhaps bringing a lefty/switch hitting bat to the lineup)
The starting staff would be:
Lester Iwakuma Buchholz Kelly Webster (to start the season)
The bullpen would be crowded but it would have (somebody will spend time on the DL):
Uehara Miller Tazawa Mujica Badenhop Layne De La Rosa Hochevar
Bench Brigade: Catcher X to be determined; probably bring back Ross until Swihart is ready. Holt Craig (assuming that Victorino is starting in RF) Nava

The Sox really need to years to be a championship ready team.
1. Sign Lester 7y/155m 2. Signed Juan Francisco 1.34 instead of LaRoche for 2y/24m 3. Sign Ryan Doumit 1y/9m 4. Sign Gavin Floyd 1y/12m team option for 2016 5. Resign Breslow to a minor league contract 6. Sign Luke Gregorson 3y/18m 7. Sign Alberto Callaspo 1y/7m 2015 FA TOTAL 57.48M instead of 68.14M after Francisco signing 1. Trade Napoli and Ranauldo to Seattle for 3b. D.J. Peterson and SP Edwin Diaz 2. Trade Victorino to K.C. and 5m for a PTBNL. 2015 CASH TRADED AWAY 29M LINEUP RF Betts CF Castillo LF Cespedes C Vazquez/Doumit 1B LaRoche/Craig 1B is Juan Francisco instead of LaRoche 2b Pedroia ss Bogaerts 3b Callaspo DH Ortiz
SP Lester Floyd Bucholz Kelly Rubby De La Rosa/Webster whoever wins the spot in spring training
RP Koji Tazawa Gregorson The loser between De La Rosa/Webster Mujica Layne Workman
BENCH Doumit Holtz Craig Bradley AAA Nava
If you want to spend more money on Sandoval for 18m over Callaspo that is fine. Just change the prospect package you would get for Napoli, because in a year or two D.J. Peterson should be ready at 3B. In 2016 we sign another top pitcher if we need to. The Sox are bound to have a lefty in the rotation late in 2015. I like this approach cause we don't lose any draft picks, and we keep our prospects available for a trade or depth.

From what I understand, we have roughly $50M to spend after re-signing Koji. Given that (soft?) limit, I do something like:
Sign Lester for 6/144 (-24) Trade Owens, Johnson, Marrero, and a Coyle/Ramos type for Hamels (-21) Trade Cespedes and Buchholz for Cueto (+6) - they need OF help and longer-term pitching Trade Napoli and Ranaudo/Webster/Workman for Iwakuma and Edwin Diaz (+6) - similar to Cincy, they need RHH power and MLB ready pitching depth. Trade Shanf+$6.5M to whoever will take it. (+6.5) Sign Hanley for 5/100 (-20) That should leave roughly $3.5M in payroll space.
Rotation: Hamels Cueto Lester Iwakuma RDLR
Lineup: Betts (CF) Pedroia (2B) Ortiz (DH) Hanley (3B) Craig (1B) Nava (LF) Bogaerts (SS) Castillo (RF) Vazquez (C)
Bench: Holt Brentz (platoon with Nava, a la Gomes) Butler Weeks
Bullpen: Koji Taz Kelly Mujica 2 of Ranaudo/Workman/Webster not in Seattle trade Layne

Trade for Carlos Gonzalez. Obviously there are injury concerns and the Coors Field factor but I think he's worth a shot. He's a legit middle of the order lefty bat when healthy. He's owed 53 mil over the next 3 years, so you would think the Rockies wouldn't mind moving him for a reasonable deal. I'd offer Webster (cost controlled back end SP with mid rotation potential and heavy sinker for the high altitude) JBJ (gold glove D in spacious outfield, worst case a cheap 4th OF, but potential for more) and maybe Coyle (almost MLB ready and his pop might play up in Coors). Rockies get 3 cheap pieces, and maybe a 4th piece lottery ticket, who all would project to have solid roles but with upside AND shed 53 mil. Sox get lefty hitting LF for 3 years/53 mil, but I believe his AAV is only 11.5 mil, which could be a steal. I'd also trade some combination of Cespedes and/or prospects for one of Ross, Latos, Leake etc. Then sign Lester 6/138 and trade for D. Murphy from Mets. Would offer Craig (backup LH 1B Duda and LH OF Granderson and provide Cuddyer insurance) or mid level prospect(s).
Rotation: 1-Lester, 2-Ross (or similar), 3-Buchholz, 4-Kelly, 5- RDLR/Wright/Barnes
Pen: Koji, Taz, Mujica, Workman, Layne, FA (Badenhop, Hochevar etc), 1 of the losers from 5 starter battle
Lineup: Betts RF, Pedey 2B, Papi DH, Napoli 1B, CarGo LF, Bogaerts SS, Murphy 3B, Castillo CF, Vazquez C
Bench: backup C, Holt 2B/SS/3B, Victorino LF/CF/RF, Nava OF/1B
If I got offered the right deal, I'd consider trading Nava and keep WMB as backup 1B/ 3B vs LHP. If I couldn't move Craig I'd have to consider eating some salary and trading Victorino instead because it might be easier to trade his 1 year deal vs. Craig's 3 year deal.

Yeah for real no problems. I want Vazquez in Boston. I wanted Heyward because he is solid lefty, which means Headly and Avila wouldnt have had to produce heavy with the bats. Without Heyward in my lineup I would go for Sandoval and trade for Castro to have more left handed OFFENSE in the lineup.

Starting Rotation Lester Iwakuma/Samardzija Buchholz Kelly De La Rosa/Webster/Ranaudo/Workman/maybe Wright
BullPen Uehara Tazawa Gregorson Layne Mujica Workman Internal Arm or Lefty
Starting Lineup C Vasquez 1B Napoli 2B Pedroia SS Bogaerts 3B Headley/Lowrie/Ramirez RF Betts/Victorino CF Castillo/Betts LF Craig/Nava (Cespedes) DH Ortiz
Bench Nava, OF/1B Holt, IF/OF Ross, C or another backup C Weeks If
Sign Yoan Moncada for up to $50 million.
Trade Cespedes & Coyle to the Mariners to acquire Iwakuma. Or Trade Marrero, Owens and another trade chip for Samardzija. Sign Gregorson for a 2 or 3 year deal 5 or 6 per year. Sign Headley if he would take 2 for 28 or 3 for 39. Or sign Lowrie 1 for 10 maybe 11 Or sign Ramirez if he would take 5 for 85 If all those 3rd basemen get more than that then keep it internal with Cecchini/Middlebrooks If Samardzija then Cespedes starts in LF and trade Craig or Nava for anything that will help.

This one has a few too many trades/moves to actually happen - but would be great if it did:
Sign: Jon Lester (5yr, 110M w/ 1yr, 22M & 5M buyout option + no trade clause) = 23M AAV Andrew Miller (3yr, 22.5M) = 7.5M AAV
Trade: Cespedes + Britton for Latos + Marshall + 1M = ~5.5M AAV Sean Coyle + Ryan Lavarnway (throw in) for John Jason = ~4M AAV Junichi Tazawa + Anthony Ranaudo for Matt Kemp + 15M = 17M AAV
Lineup: 3B Mookie (R) 2B Pedroia (R) DH Ortiz (L) LF Kemp (R) 1B Napoli (R) RF Nava (S/L)/Victorino (R/S) SS Bogaerts (R) C Vazquez (R) CF Castillo (R)
Bench: C Jaso (L) OF Victorino (R/S)/Nava (S/L) OF/1B Craig IF/OF Holt (L)
Pitching: SP Lester (L) SP Latos (R) SP Buchholz (R) SP Kelly (R) SP RDLR (R)
CL Uehara (R) SET Miller (L) SET Mujica (R) LSP Layne (L) 6/7 Workman (R) 6/7 Marshall (L) LR Wright (R)
SP/RP depth: Webster (R) Barnes (R) Escobar (R) Wilson (R) Hembree (R)
This adds 57 mil in payroll which will bring them just a couple mil shy of the tax. - Moving Betts to 3B makes sense even if he has a noodle arm (which I don't think he does). - Kemp would me less of a liability defensively in Fenway and I project a 3+ win player who could turn into a 4+ win player down the road with a move to 1B - possibly after the first year (he will complain, but moving to LF worked out and I think he could be an average+ 1B with his athleticism and height at 6'4") - I picked each of these 3 trades because I perceive them to be buy low candidates - Would not trade Victorino as I expect him to be worth more than his contract this year and his trade value would appear to be very low - With Napoli/Latos/Victorino all coming off the books - there would be plenty of money to go big after Heyward next offseason and fill the other holes internally (or move Betts back to RF and sign/promote a 3B) - Team is too RHH heavy, but I don't see this as a major issue as these aren't RHH platoon players in the starting lineup (aside for maybe Victorino) - As always - trades are speculative as none of us know the other teams value of their players or ours, but slight alterations like swapping in Johnson for Ranaudo or changing Jaso to another backup catcher wouldn't change the overall makeup too much.

Sign Hanley Ramirez to a 4yr $70 mil contract with a team option for a 5th & 6th year.(6yr - $105, 17.5 aav) Sign Andrew Miller to a 4yr $40 mil contract. Trade Allen Craig & Jemile Weeks to Cincinnati for Mike Leake. Trade Jackie Bradley JR & Drake Britton to San Francisco for Tim Lincercum + 4mil in cash.
Line up;
Victorino RF Pedroia 2b Ramirez 3B Ortiz DH Cepedes LF Napoli 1B Bogaerts SS Castillo CF Vazquez C
Bench;
Butler C Betts OF/2B Nava 1B/OF Holt 3B/SS/2B/OF
Starting Pitchers; Buchholz Leake Kelly Lincecum Wright
Bullpen;
De La Rosa Workman Mujica Tazawa Layne Miller Uehara
I think this gives the team a strong starting line up to start off the season plus good depth at AAA (Brentz, Middlebrooks, Cecchini, + I would add Swihart, Shaw & Coyle to the 40 man roster).
Trading for Mike Leake as a 27yr old 3rd-Year Arb Eligible SP adds an experienced pitcher to the organization who should be expected to pitch 180+ innings.
Trading for 30yr old (31 in June) Tim Lincecum & 4 million in cash reduces his salary to 14m for the Sox in the last year of his contract and adds another experienced SP to the rotation.
Wright as the #5 SP & Keeping De L Rosa & Workman in the pen as long relief to fill in as necessary adds depth to the SP & RP with good depth at AAA (Webster, Barnes, Ranaudo, Wilson, Escobar, Hembree + I would add Owens & Rodriguez to the 40 man roster).
I would try to sign Cepedes before the trade deadline and if I couldn't I would move him at the deadline. I would continue to try and find another left handed RP & a left handed bat to fit into the 3 through 6 spot of the line up hopefully moving Victorino or Napoli as the center piece. And I would consider adding De La Cruz, Ramos, Couch & Scott to the 40 man roster if there was room.

Really wanted Heyward for RF with the idea of dumping Cespedes for pitching, but that plan is now gone.
So....

TRADES Iwakuma for Napoli, Coyle, Barnes (save $6M)
Rotation Lester Iwakuma Kelly Buchholz Webster/Wright/Ranaudo or later Johnson/Owens/Rodriguez
Pen Uehara Miller Tazawa RDLR Layne 2 of Workman/Webster/Wright/Escobar/A Wilson **Hochevar if/when healthy

Trade Barnes, Marrero, Johnson and Middlebrooks for Hamels.
Sign Lester for for around 6yrs 140m
Sign Shields for 4yrs 80m
Sign Miller for 2yrs 15m

Holt Nava Butler / LH FA Craig
Lester Hamels Shields Buccholz Kelly
Uehara Miller Tazawa De La Rosa Badenhop Workman Layne / Webster / Escobar
I would personally go big on pitching, considering Buccholz likely won't make it through. Panda definitely isn't worth the money so I wouldn't even bother - Cecchini should hold his own. Lester needs to be the main concern though!

I don't pretend to know what it'll take to sign or trade for guys. I'm resigning Jon Lester for whatever it takes. Ditto Andrew Miller. On paper the latter is a terrible move, but if you actually calculate dollars invested versus increase in odds of winning a WS, it's completely justifiable, especially given that, in all likelihood, we merely have to match his best other offer, not beat it. I'm also re-signing David Ross and Burke Badenhop. I'm making a list of all the walk-year pitchers and doing a comprehensive scouting and sabermetric analysis and ranking. I could actually go part way with the latter, but I don't have hit/fx data, so it would be silly to presume that any ranking I could come up with would be the best possible such ranking. Furthermore, I have no idea what teams want in trade. I'm then trading for one of those pitchers, and for Luis Valbuena. The pitcher I trade for will neither necessarily be the guy at the top of my list nor the guy who provides the best bang-for-buck. Rather, I'll split the difference. If my #2 guy is available for significantly less than my #1 guy, I'll go after him instead, but I won't do that if he only provides a little more value. If my #3 or #4 guy is available for shockingly little, I could go in that direction. In fact, if there's a tight cluster of pitchers in the ranking, I may end up going for whoever costs the least. To get those two guys (and perhaps some non-40-man guys coming back), I'm dealing Cespedes, Ranaudo, Workman, Britton, Lavarnway (possible DFA) and players from my trade priority list, in order of their priority. I'm really hoping to not go into my grade C players, and to avoid the better A and B guys. (If you haven't yet contributed to that "great thread" (jmei), give it a shot!) 40 man roster is the current 35 less the five above, plus Swihart, Rodriguez, Coyle, and Shaw, plus Lester, Miller, Ross, Badenhop, X, and Valbuena. Betts, lf / rf Pedroia, 2b Ortiz, dh Napoli, 1b (predicting up year after his apnea surgery) Victorino, rf; Nava / Craig, lf, when Victorino is hurt Bogaerts, ss (later moves up to 5) Valbeuna, 3b Vazquez, c Castillo, cf (could move up) Ross Holt Nava Craig (Brentz when Victorino is hurt) Lester X Buchholz Kelly De La Rosa Uehara Miller Tazawa Mujica Layne Badenhop Wright Whenever a SP is hurt, Wright's in the rotation. PawSox rotation is Barnes, Webster, Owens, Rodriguez, and Johnson. Escobar gets to start whenever an injury to the 11 MLB pitchers or the 5 PawSox starters opens up a spot. By late July, RDLR may be in the pen and a PawSox starter or Wright may be in the rotation.

Imagine you're the GM; how would you approach this offseason? Try to adhere to reasonable trades and salary projections, but other than that, go wild and build your ideal realistic Opening Day 25-man roster. So wait, you started this thread after exhorting all of us this summer that we never know what trades could be made or was offered for whom? Just making sure before I trade away Cespedes in a package for reasonable return.
