Teams will do this a lot with players who can still be outrighted without consent. Several teams will like a player but not enough to give him a 40-man roster spot, so they'll claim the player on waivers and immediately DFA him with the hope that he can make it through the remaining teams without being claimed. Another Sox-related example was JD Durbin, who went Twins -> DBacks -> Red Sox -> Phillies before making it through waivers unclaimed.
March 29, 2007: Selected off waivers by the Arizona Diamondbacks from the Minnesota Twins. April 9, 2007: Selected off waivers by the Boston Red Sox from the Arizona Diamondbacks. April 13, 2007: Selected off waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies from the Boston Red Sox. April 17, 2007: Outrighted to AAA Ottawa of the International League.

There is no reason to believe either team made any attempt to trade Hassan. It is much more likely that the A's, like the Sox, were trying to get him through waivers and keep him.

These kinds of guys are easy to get off waivers. No one would offer anything other than other guys you could get off waivers. So there isn't much of a point.
