There may or may not be an intent difference, but I'm with elguapo - I'd rather be alive and missing some possessions than missing friends or family struck by a vehicle traveling 100mph. That isn't the question. We're talking about intent, not results or possible results. It's not a "would you rather?" game. It's a "who is probably a better person?" question. And how can there not be an intent difference? You're saying that Britton wanted to pistol whip a bunch of guys and steal their possessions but instead drove too fast while drunk and failed to hurt anyone? No, I'm saying that DUI is a complete disregard for the lives around you and needs to be recognized as far more dangerous than pistol whipping.

So is driving around with screaming kids in the back seat. Or driving while on depression medication. When you invade a home and pistol whip a bunch of guys you are making the conscious decision to actually hurt someone.

Are you guys actually gonna debate what is worst DUI or armed robbery? There is a pretty simple answer, I'll let you figure it out.

If he's an addict, there may be a tiny bit. I don't know whether Britton has reformed. Hopefully he has as a condition of his continued employment, and he'll continue to hand over his car keys when / if he drinks. But everybody knows aggravated robbery carries a stiff legal penalty. The law has done what it can, and society passes harsh judgement. Everybody also knows that a good lawyer can keep you out of jail for DUI, and that even if you lose your license, you'll get it back in time. Everybody also knows that losing a license doesn't keep drunks off the road. The law has not done what it can, and society turns a blind eye.

You're saying that Britton wanted to pistol whip a bunch of guys and steal their possessions but instead drove too fast while drunk and failed to hurt anyone? That's not technically true. It looks like the other poster (el guapo) was comparing the potential negative ramifications of the two incidents in his analysis leading to one conclusion, and you are comparing the intentions behind the two incidents in your analysis leading to another conclusion. I don't think it's fair to the other posters for you to say " we're talking about intent" and then repeat your conclusion when you were the only poster to start your argument from there. In other words, I think you are both right, because you are not arguing anything mutually exclusive, since both conclusions are the result of different starting points.

The Red Sox should not know everything their major league players do let alone the minor leaguers... You don't launch full fledged investigations on everyone.

If the Red Sox haven't already, they need to launch an internal investigation to determine what if anything anyone employed with the team was aware of regarding what apparently was an ongoing pattern of behavior. Kukuk's co-defendants are apparently rolling on him and, probably in exchange for lessened sentences, admitting to multiple criminal incidents. If an internal investigation arrives at the conclusion that nobody knew anything, then the question needs to be addressed - How is it that a man like this, an apparent multiple felon, was employed by the team without the awareness of any other staff? Also, I think it would be prudent for the Red Sox to consult with MLB to determine whether they can seek reimbursement of some portion of Kukuk's signing bonus. It is shameful that this money is apparently now being used to bail him out of jail and will likely be used to fund his legal defense. How was Aaron Hernandez employed by the Patriots? Teams do not have PIs following players 24/7.

johnsickels ?@minorleagueball 38m38 minutes ago Defendant testifies against Boston Red Sox minor league pitcher Cody Kukuk in aggravated robbery case sbnation.com/e/7178028
According to the Journal-World report, Zachary J. Pence of Lawrence is cooperating with the prosecution and testified against co-defendants Kukuk, Driscall Johnson, Yusef Kindell, and Gabriel Patterson. Pence told the court that early in the morning of November 8th, 2014, Kukuk and Patterson picked him up from his home, asking for "help" with a planned robbery.
Kukuk showed him a backward hoodie he planned to wear over his head with eyeholes cut out to disguise his face and a wooden table leg he intended to use as a weapon.
Pence said that upon arrival at the victims’ apartment, Kukuk and Johnson, armed with an unloaded gun, were the only two with weapons.
Pence said he "fiddled with the window" before breaking down the front door, then Kukuk and Johnson went upstairs, eventually pulling a "naked kid" onto the hallway floor, pointing the gun to his head.
The victim inside the main-floor bedroom, Christopher Adams, a soon-to-be Kansas University senior, said he was asleep when two men with ski masks burst into his bedroom, turned on the light and began striking him with a wooden table leg and pointing a gun to his head.
Adams said the two masked men told him, "We’re not playing around, we’re serious. This is not a game," and demanded money and marijuana.
The men then left his room, leaving him with multiple injuries to his chin and back, and he heard a man say "I’m taking your Xbox."
Relative to my avatar, too bad this was Kansas and not Idaho

Relative to my avatar, too bad this was Kansas and not Idaho Because then Kukuk could have brought a loaded gun and 2 or more people could have been killed and that would have made this story so much better? Wow you Americans sure are ****** up.

Wow you Americans sure are ****** up. You think Johnson & Kukuk did not have a loaded gun because this happened in Kansas and not Idaho?? As if Wal-Mart in Kansas doesn't sell ammo? ? The story reeks of delight in power & cruelty; the fact that they chose to bring an unloaded gun is really the only sign that these men have some moral compunction. They did not just make a moral choice not to kill or seriously injur, but seemingly rejected even the possibility of using deadly weapons in a deadly way. Hopefully they will have many long years in prison to follow this chink of light to properly ordering their consciences.

As I wrote earlier, this is a lot more sinister than boys being boys. Kukuk didn't lack for options, or cash after he signed. This is something he does because he wants to. Think about that.

I'm hoping "naked kid" meant college kid or something, rather than an actual child. Still though, wow.

You think Johnson & Kukuk did not have a loaded gun because this happened in Kansas and not Idaho? No, I'm saying the gun could just as well have been loaded regardless of where it happened, so if someone started shooting at them in hopes that their gun was not loaded then a lot of people could potentially get killed.

So let's just hope the criminals don't load guns instead of having any way of protecting yourself. It's easy to judge from the comfort of your couch, but when your life is threatened and you don't know what is going to happen, what do you want? On a personal level, I'd rather have a German Shepard, but there is no way in hell that anyone should be deprived of the ability to protect their own life or their family's lives. What the Idaho reference was to is the pretty obvious observation that there would have been guns in the house, though I imagine a lot of people in Kansas own them as well.

I'm interpreting the naked kid as being the son of the college senior whose family was assaulted. There's 100% no question in my mind that if somebody walked into my house and pointed a gun at my kid their gun better be loaded because otherwise none of them would be alive to go to court and if their gun was loaded, they better be prepared to use it because my kids are worth dying for.

"... Kukuk and Johnson, armed with an unloaded gun, were the only two with weapons ..."
Another way to read this is that they both had guns but Johnson's gun was not loaded. Not sure which way to take it.

If you want to continue the gun discussion, take it to the Off-Topic forum. I will be deleting any further posts on that topic in this thread.

93 years in prison because of a robbery? Isn't that waaay too much? That's what they do so almost every single person who gets arrested, guilty or not, agrees to plea bargains. American justice. This is why Kukuk's "friends" rolled on him already.

93 years in prison because of a robbery? Isn't that waaay too much? Agreed. 15-20, minimum 10 for parole for assaulting a minor for all five seems more appropriate. Higher end for the leaders, lower end for the chatterbox.
