This is great. They basically signed Ramirez for the contract they'd want to give Cespedes, but for a better hitter. I'm sure they already have a good idea what Cespy (+prospects) can fetch in an SP, so it's not like they signed Hanley and then are left holding Cespedes. I think it's a fair contract, but not a deal given position and injury risk, although a fair contract is almost by nature a deal in current FA market.
No way Hanley is a SS consideration; the left side defense is already a worry, even with Sandoval coming in. CANNOT imagine Bogaerts is going anywhere.

Uh ... wow. Really didn't see this coming until the rumblings started a couple of days ago. If Hanley stays healthy, this lineup is absolutely stacked. If he's in LF, you've got:
Betts Pedroia Hanley Ortiz Napoli Sandoval Bogaerts Castillo Vazquez
Or something like that ... that's outrageous.

He hasn't had a great year in which he was fully healthy since 2010, but if he can stay healthy, he will put up some BIG numbers. I'm just wondering why the Sox got 2 position players before they even signed a pitcher (Lester Hopefully), as their rotation remains very weak.

I don't think runs will be hard to come by next year, as long as everyone stays healthy. Gotta say, its pretty exciting! Now to bring back Lester...

No pitchers have signed so I'm not sure why you are worried about the order of who's acquired.

Glad to have Hanley back.
Sign a hitter, stick him in left field - see, that's not so hard.

assuming we get Pablo also that meens we have Victorino, Craig, Betts, Castillo and Cespedes to fill out two OF spots. If we move Cespedes in a move for a SP then id be happy to move Castillo next and keep Betts in CF go with Craig/Brentz/Vic/Nava platoon of some sorts in RF. I also worry Hanly in LF doesnt work and they shift him to 3B Pablo to 1B and let Napoli go in FA.

We were the highest bidders on Castillo, he signed a seven year deal and played half a month. There is a 0% chance he is traded this offseason.

assuming we get Pablo also that meens we have Victorino, Craig, Betts, Castillo and Cespedes to fill out two OF spots. There are 25 spots on the roster. I assume Cespedes is traded, Craig is backup 1B-DH, Victorino & Nava are reserve OF, Holt is reserve IF; Hanley provides depth on the left side of the infield.

Has the value been confirmed? Heard on Mike and Mike earlier that one source believed the deal would be worth more than the 90 mil. Haven't heard this elsewhere.

You've got five bench players in that situation though (adding the other catcher). Doubt they'd go with the six-man bullpen. Can they really carry all seven of Hanley, Castillo, Betts, Craig, Shanf, Nava, Napoli?

Not long term, but they can go into spring training with 5 bench players; they can even start the season that way. I'm skeptical about moving Victorino or Craig at present. Nava could go, but he's LH balance. I am good with trading Napoli, as you suggested was possible elsewhere, which gets you back to a 4-man bench with plenty of flexibility.

Oh you can go into ST with all of these guys. I'm talking regular season. I don't think it's sustainable for more than a couple weeks, unless they're going to commit to using some kind of rotating sixth RP of guys with options for 8-10 days at a time. Could be like an NHL team carrying an extra defenseman who doesn't dress, but in this case it'd be a guy technically on the Pawtucket roster who just isn't there and travels with Boston. Wonder if they'd get away with that. In fact... I just kind of got myself intrigued by that idea.

Hanley was the most exciting Red Sox minor leaguer I ever saw. In the 5-6 games I saw him in, he was Xander with elite athleticism. Watching a Sea Dogs game with him and Pedroia flanking second base was a very memorable experience ... I thought I was looking at the next decade+ of the Red Sox.
