@jonheymancbs: Sandoval has agreement to go to the red sox for 5 years, close to 100M

At this rate Lester should be back by lunchtime.
EDIT: FWIW, I like it. The inevitable Papi decline was going to leave a huge hole in the middle of our order, but that appears to have been addressed.

@alexspeier: Gustavo Vasquez, agent for Pablo Sandoval, says his client is still weighing offers but no deal yet.

@ken_Rosenthal: Sandoval’s agent, Gustavo Vasquez, told me same thing he told @alexspeier: No deal with #RedSox. However, @jonheymancbs reporting it’s done.
Way to reveal sources kendoll

The sides could very well be stalling until a trade of Cespedes, etc. is wrapped up. I don't see how Panda and Ramirez can be added to the 40 man without some serious movement (I get that they can remove Weeks, Lavarnway).

And it continues. @alexspeier: Pablo Sandoval’s agent says reports of Red Sox deal premature t.co/cQbFwEt1YnI like this one the best @brianmacp: Since start of 2013 season, Hanley Ramirez ranks fifth in the majors in OPS+ (156); Pablo Sandoval ranks 67th (114).

I really don't like this. Giving this kind of money to a player that we don't need and has weight issues.

@chriscotillo: Told now that it is still possible that Sandoval could end up with #SFGiants or #Padres.

Jon Heyman is as good as it gets when it comes to this stuff, doubt he'd put his reputation on the line.

Seems like these signings are the fans equivalent of receiving a "Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving, from the Red Sox" card.
Said in the Offseason thread, but I believe Pablo is also necessary due to the age & potential decline of Papi. The FO has to protect the team and Hanley/Pablo should do that.
Lock it down and come to Boston, Pablo. The lobster is better here.

How/why would we sign both?

I have to believe the Red Sox already have a trade in place as a contingency. Otherwise they are shopping a ton of outfielders around without a lot of leverage.

I really don't like this. Giving this kind of money to a player that we don't need and has weight issues. Keep in mind the substantial defensive boost you get with Sandoval over Hanley at third. We could be talking about a 10-20 run difference, at least for a couple years until Panda loses some agility.

Obviously a lot to shake out still, my quick take is that 2 of Cespedes/Betts/Bogaerts will be moved (with Cespedes almost certain).

Although that's more than likely right, no one really knows how good/bad Hanley would be at 3B - he's had what 89 starts? But it's moot - you can't play him there ahead of Sandoval

Why wouldn't the Red Sox have leverage? The top 2 position players just came off the board. Melky and Cruz are still available, and upton in a trade, cespedes is a cheaper version.

Obviously a lot to shake out still, my quick take is that 2 of Cespedes/Betts/Bogaerts will be moved (with Cespedes almost certain). I'd be fairly confident that they already have a Cespedes deal lined up. If another piece is on the move, more likely that it's Victorino. Unless of course they've found the 2.0 iteration of the Pedro deal, in which case I'm sure we'd all begrudgingly include Mookie. <sigh> I miss vintage Pedro.....

I've given up trying to make this point. I don't get it. Papi had a .688 BA and .760 OBP in the World Series. He's way better.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I understand getting one of them but both? I see Hanley as a guy who is injury prone who hasn't had a great year in which he was fully healthy since 2010. As for "Fat Ichiro" (Sandoval) I don't think he hits enough home runs for a guy his size, and he is also very injury prone.
It's only a matter of time before Cecchini, Cespedes, and Middlebrooks are on the move. As long as Betts, Bogaerts, and Swihart stay, I'm happy.

Assuming cespedes is traded, and bogaerts, betts, and Napoli are not, I love this lineup. It won't be the strongest defensive team we put out there but we should be leading the league in runs scored again.
That being said I still can't see what makes Sandoval a 20m a year player, with a 5 year guarantee. He'll be our highest paid player but at least 4th best hitter, quite possible lower.

True but imagine if they have JBJ on the bench as a defensive replacement for all 3 OF spots and Marrero on the bench as a SS/2B defensive replacement down the road.

If the news of these signings is true, the exhilaration that would be felt in Red Sox nation would be equivalent to the Crawford/Gonzalez signings a few years ago. Here's hoping for better results.
