Ortiz signed for 2 yrs, 26 mill, plus incentives.
Sign a power hitting outfielder who bats RH, such as Tori Hunter, Ryan Ludwick, Cody Ross (NO MORE THAN ONE YEAR) Bryce Brentz will be ready sometimes next year and there is no point to signing a power hitting outfielder to a multi-year deal.
1) I think the rotation should be:
1. Buchholz
2. Lester
3. Doubront
4. Lackey
5. Rubby De La Rosa
Other Candidates to start: Aceves, Stewart, Chris Hernandez, Allen Webster, Mortensen, Morales, Wright
Maybe Sign FA pitcher if necessary, such as Brandon McCarthy or Anibal Sanchez
2) Right now they sox have Mauro Gomez and Jerry Sands. I think that they may be able to adequately fill the role but there are other options:
I am a big fan of Tyler Moore. He is a Pinch Hitter/ 4th outfielder for the Nats. In just 156 at-bats he hit 10 HR. If the sox aquired him and gave him everyday playing time, he can hit 30. Moore is an afterthought for the Nats, and the Sox would not have to give up much for him. He also plays OF. I would trade Andrew Baily, Atchison or Salty for him and another player, such as Eury Perez-He is good too
The sox can also go after Matt Adams of the Cards. He is an afterthought and has the power and raw hitting ability to hit 30 HRs.
3) Iglesias cant hit. At this time, he is no more than a utility infielder. Ciriaco can hit. Although his defense is not as good, he can provide offense.
4) I would re-sign cody ross, ryan ludwick, or tori hunter BUT NO FOR MORE THAN A YEAR. Personally, I would not sign one of them, i'd go with an internal option. As I said earlier, Brentz is almost ready. I'd hang on Ells and see what he's got and if the Sox can't resign him to a long term deal, I'd trade him by the deadline if they aren't winning. I'd go with Daniel Nava, Ryan Kalish, Jeremy Hazelbaker, or Juan Carlos Linares in left. Nava had the second highest OBP on the team last year, and he provides good d, power, and speed. OBP may be the most important offensive category. I'm a fan of Kalish and JC Linares so I'd would definetly give them both a shot.I would trade Sweeney.
5) 25 Man:
C Lavarnway
1B Tyler Moore
2B Pedroia
3B WMB
SS Ciriaco
LF Nava/ Hazelbaker/ Kalish
CF Ellsbury
RF JC Linares
DH Ortiz
B A backup catcher(I'd trade Salty, he can't do anything but hit a few HR)
B Sands
B Iglesias
B Kalish (No matter what he should be on the team)
SP Buch
SP Lester
SP Doubront
SP Lackey
SP Rubby De La Rosa
Other Candidates to start: Aceves, Stewart, Chris Hernandez, Allen Webster, Mortensen, Morales, Wright
RP Mortensen
RP Melancon
RP Morales
RP Bard
RP Tazawa
RP Miller
RP Breslow
6) Protect Hazelbaker, Wright, Fields, Webster from rule 5
I did this very fast so sorry if I left out any details or if there are spelling errors
