That is very good news to hear. The Sox will now own 2 of their minor league teams in Pawtucket and Salem not including the GCL and DSL which are already owned.

Kind of surprising that they haven't done this until now, honestly.

What is the benefit of owning your own minor league clubs?
Not being sarcastic or dismissive. Just actually wondering.

That is true. They precisely bought the High A one to avoid being left without a shair and having to go to Lancaster etc.

Sounds to me like the Pawsox won't be part of the FSG Umbrella and won't be owned by the Red Sox and is instead being purchased as a separate investment by individuals who also own part of FSG. Hence whomever runs the PawSox won't be reporting to Larry Lucchino. If the new owners are smart they will keep Tamburo in charge.

It's full of lifers who are very well thought of on Yawkey Way. I'd think the idea would be a) to maintain stability once those lifers eventually leave and b) to buy a business to make profits.

It's a very good business move to invest in the Red Sox minor league system when interest in the farm is so high. Payback on PawSox will be immediate with the outstanding team they will have in 2015.
Now with Pawtucket and Salem ownership locked up and the Sea Dogs and Drive both having Fenway like features at Hadlock and Fluor Field it looks like the system should be stable for a very long time.

As many probably knew, but didn't thing about.. It wasn't that long ago that teams owned all of their minor league teams anyway.. Those teams just lost so much money that they "sold" the rights to them if I understand it correctly, or folded them (certain ones) outright.
Private enterprise ones had (have) a better grip on advertising and marketing, hence don't perform/play in front of 50-200 fans per game.. As some old Winter Have Red Sox fans can attest to and recall as just one example of a team owned example of a poorly ran and never supported (advertised, media, anything) by the team.
Not to get off on another tirade that turns some of you off.. But I can remember one example where a friend of mine, who was General manager of advertising at the old winter haven mall at the time.. Donated 500 posters of the Red Sox stars from 1974 to me.. This was in 1977.. I gave them to Joe Dobson (Sox GM) who was getting __0__ from Boston in any advertising to support that team via the media. Therefore? He made "Media poster night" with the 1st 500 fans getting the.. Think those posters were like 16"x32" of Sox stars.. One was even of Tommy Harper (lol), not even with them any longer, but he scrounged up some radio adds and did get 3-400 that night.

As a long time Pawsox season ticket holder, I hope the front office folks remain on the job. They are very responsive to all their fans.
I also wouldn't mind seeing more Pawsox games on Nesn.

Did John Henry at one time own the Portland team? When he owned the Marlins?
