Worth nothing that Avila is a horrible framing catcher so CV will be an upgrade for Porcello. Hope we extend him. He's from NJ and has reason o want to be in the northeast. Porcello's skillset is underrated and he's so young still. A four or five year extension would only take him through his 30/31 year old season. At last year's rate for Vazquez, plus the actual framing for Porcello (cost him 2.2 runs), the switch knocks 0.35 off his ERA. More if you go by runs-by-call rather than by-count.

That's it -- Buckholtz to Cincinatti with other pieces for Ceutao.

That's Soxnation. Kinda. I used to live in Vermont (further south) and it was pretty split Yankees/Red Sox.

I think our next move should be to trade Clay and other pieces for a pitching upgrade, because people on this board have so much trouble spelling Buchholz. And because trading him for Samardzija now seems unlikely, there's little risk of making things worse. How good a rental pitcher could Marrero, Ranaudo, and Coyle or Holt fetch?

Is Jordan Zimmermann still in play? Betts for Zimmermann? Given your SN, I'm assuming you're living up to it

All of this makes perfect sense IF they trade for a slick fielding SS like Andrus or slot Marrero at SS irregardless of how he hits. Apparently they even have made an offer to Masterson. They are going all in on ground ball pitchers. Explain to me why the left side defense should continue as is when most of the staff is now heavily ground ball oriented?
Xander as part of a deal for Hamels? We now need an ace and better infield defense would seem to be a priority.

Simon as in ALFREDO SIMON? He isn't an upgrade over Porcello. Simon and Cespedes upgrades the Tigers over Porcello alone (have to find out what the Tigers gave up to get Simon though). My bad, I missed the Cespedes part.

You have a plus-plus 2B, a plus or plus-plus 1B, and an average to plus 3B. Your overall infield defense is still very good with an OK SS.

Xander is staying...Pablo Sandoval is going to act as half of a SS with his Panda-like reflexes. I don't think we need to trade for the perfect fielding SS. Xander will be just fine. I don't think its so much focusing on ground ball pitchers as good pitchers. I could be wrong. The way this offseason has been playing out, anything can happen.

Welcome back, Porcello. Sorry we traded Julio Lugo for you. This keeps sailing over my head. Red Sox signed Lugo. Lost a 1st round pick. Porcello was a highly touted pitcher but was advised by Boras. He fell in the draft. Sox missed out.

Is Jordan Zimmermann still in play? Betts for Zimmermann? Given your SN, I'm assuming you're living up to it I'm 100% serious, but I should have mentioned only if he can be locked up long term. I wouldn't flip Betts for a rental either. Sox would have to be almost certain they can extend him. I'm also on the Bogaerts >>> Betts side of the argument.

I'm also on the Bogaerts >>> Betts side of the argument. Me too! There's plenty space in the bandwagon (though not as much as on the Keith Couch is the best pitching prospect). I still wouldn't trade Mookie for a rental.

Porcello will be 26 on opening day, same as Rubby de la Rosa.
Yes only a year of control but still I found that interesting how young he still is.

Great trade. Ben played this perfectly. This makes the Lester trade look a lot better in my eyes. Porcello is young and has been improving the last couple of years. We also get the chance of a comp pick.

Obviously there is nothing to dislike about this trade. I do worry that the infield defense, particularly on the left side, might not be the greatest as far as range goes, and that will impact Porcello heavily, just like it will Miley and Masterson.
He's probably the Sox best starter at this point or at least would have the highest expectations at this point.
Cespedes was never really anything more than a temporary chip. I won't really miss him.
I have a feeling the Sox won't get a comp pick for Porcello. I have a feeling, with him being kind of local, that he'll be with the Sox beyond his current contract. I can see him getting extended.
