Johnny Gomes gets to play in the post-season again. KC just acquired him from Atlanta. Brilliant move by Dayton Moore. Gomes' intangibles are off the charts. How any team wins a WS without this guy is beyond me. If he made this move a year ago perhaps we wouldn't have signed "three time champion" Pablo Sandoval.

I propose launching a new metric here: gWAR, a.k.a. Gomes WAR.
gWAR comprises a player's overall grittiness, gamer ability, essential intangibles, toughness, clubhouse presence and the most important component of all - "Gomesiness," which includes that all essential glue of winnability. Johnny Gomes would be the ultimate delineator of gWAR and a top gWAR rating would be 20.00 gWAR- that is ultimate peak gWAR. This would greatly help us evaluate all those guys whose true value escapes us because we can not quantify their inherent Gomesiness, which is why guys like Johnny Gomes are SO valuable, especially for playoff teams. So, for instance, Jeff Francoeur is currently a -0.2 fWAR player this year but his gWAR is at a very respectable 8.72.

That slug had a 14.2 gWAR. The only way it could've been better is if it was all Johnny Gomes.

Carson Blair among September call-ups. Breaking out the wine and candles in the Van household tonight.
Other news on former friends:
- Texas DFA Roman Mendez - Phillies recall Dalier Hinojosa - White Sox recall Frankie Montas - Yankees select contract of Andrew Bailey - Cubs select contract of Quintin Berry
Also of note Tyler Austin and Hak Ju Lee were among those DFA'ed.

So what would you say if I told you that since June 1, Wade Miley and Rubby De La Rosa's numbers were functionally identical, except that Miley was striking out more than a batter per nine more and that his slugging percentage against (potentially attributable to park, frankly) was better?
What if I told you that since the All-Star Break, Miley has clearly been the better pitcher?

He alternates - wildly - between lights out, and all over the map. Sometimes he does that in the same inning.

I just saw Nava hit a 2b about 380 to left center against the Yanks, batting RH. Guess he's a switch hitter again.

DeShields -- CF Choo -- RF Beltre -- 3B Prince -- DH Napoli -- LF Moreland -- 1B Elvis -- SS Odor -- 2B Gimenez -- C
Rangers lineup today. Definitely nothing surprising here.

Another disastrous start by Cueto - I wonder how much money he is costing himself; logically, you wouldn't think that much (every pitcher has a bad month), but throw in the change of leagues, a balky elbow - my guess is it will be a lot closer to $100 than $200; just might entice the Red Sox

Listen to the Jonah Keri (grantland ) podcast with Mark Mulder. It's fantastic. I would love to drink a handful of beers with him and chat for a while.

Mike Napoli seems to have recovered his batting stroke. Since August 16 he is 16 for 47 (.340) with 4 HRs. In the sweep of Houston he was 4 for 9 with a HR and 3 RBIs. Good for Mike.

He and Papi are both trending upwards as they learn the new strike zone. I would be surprised if Napoli isn't "good Napoli" next year.

I watched him Han-Ram one last night, slowly drifting back on a hard hit ball, planting himself and waiting as he got a bead on it,... then watching it fly five feet over his head! To his credit he did catch it one-handed on the bounce off the fence, but he got it back in too late to keep the runner at first from scoring. Didn't matter much as the Rangers, once again, pounded Houston pitching. But he got a failing grade from me, despite the effort. He looked a lot more comfortable when he was at first base.

That's pretty understandable, though I'd bet he'd improve a lot faster than Hanley. I've always been of the opinion that all good defense requires is hard work at least at the less demanding positions.

"Johnny Gomes loves himself some Johnny Gomes". What a self promoting piece of dirt and yet the masses ate it up, good grief.

How about Texas? Wanted to give the Rangers a shout. Back in first.
Also.after one bad year of injury, Mr Prince is playing every day and producing as he always does.

Article in SPRING TRAINING ONLINE: Braves Pitch New St. Pete Training Camp
The Atlanta Braves are part of a partnership proposing a 240-acre, $622-million St. Petersburg sports complex that would include a new spring-training complex for the club.
The Braves are part of SportsPark Partners LLC, a corporate entity that includes real-estate developer Echelon and the Gary Sheffield Sports Foundation. SportsPark Partners LLC is proposing a $622-million development at the former Toytown landfill site off I-275 in St. Petersburg. (If you know St. Pete: the location is north of downtown, east of the freeway and across from the Valupak plant on the west side of the freeway, south of the Hwy. 686 interchange.)
The St. Petersburg sports complex would include a 11,000-capacity ballpark (10,000 seats, 1,000 on the berm), a 15,000-seat fieldhouse for indoor events, a 20,000-seat track and field stadium, an aquatic center, a hockey rink and a 200,000-square foot dormitory housing 800.
It's no secret the Atlanta Braves are not seeking to stay at Disney World's Wide World of Sports after their lease ends in 2017, and it's no secret that Disney is making absolutely no effort toward keeping the Braves at Champion Stadium. The Braves have become a lesser lessee there, and with Disney moving strongly into more youth sports and tournaments - especially soccer - the Braves announced last April that they were looking for a new spring home.
One interesting part of the proposal: it's being designed for two spring-training teams. With Doug Melvin (a Scottsdale resident) gone as Milwaukee Brewers general manager, it's hard to say with certainty that the team is totally committed to Maryvale Baseball Park.
