@jameswagnerwp: Anthony Rendon getting second opinion from Dr. James Andrews today. Brisk business, and not just in pitching resources. The position players may be dropping like flies also...

Old friend Felix Doubront released. Wow, I'd missed this. Too bad. Will always strike me as a guy who maybe could've been more. Were there still some here who were pissed the Sox didn't get more for him?

Were there still some here who were pissed the Sox didn't get more for him? What about the people who were talking about him as a potential #2 based on like six weeks of good pitching back in '13? And of course, Doubront's own grumblings about moving to the bullpen are worth remembering as well. You think he's a little more open to that now?

@ken_Rosenthal: The biggest takeaway from the statement by the union is that there is growing tension between the sides, on this and other issues.

Doubront to the Blue Jays on a minor league contract.
Maybe the Red Sox 9-run inning will not be limited to spring training this year!

Trevor Cahill is probably toast, but he's a pretty good buy-low gamble for the Braves.

The Yankees just DFAed Austin Romine. Is he worth a waiver claim from the Red Sox? He's probably got a better bat than Leon, but is probably worse defensively (especially framing-wise).

While Romine has managed to stay just barely above the Mendoza line, Leon has actually had better big league production to date taking walks into account. It's true, the projection systems like Romine to regress to the mean a bit more than Leon. But I'm skeptical of said regression in both cases, because it only works, generally speaking, on players that get more MLB playing time because scouts/managers/etc. decide they deserve it. (If I somehow got 50 PAs in the majors and batted .000 it would not be reasonable to assume that I would bat .180 or however much you like to regress to the mean if I got another 50 PAs. Because I wouldn't get those PAs.) Anyway, the differences on offense seem too marginal to me to justify any sort of defensive downgrade.

Doubont probably did have the ability to be a #2 starter and his performance during those six weeks was evidence of that. But succeeding in the majors takes a lot more than raw ability. It takes mental toughness, drive, and an incredible work ethic in a league full of guys who work hard. It's been said that substantial short term deviations in performance are just due to luck. But they aren't. Often the player really has performed better over that short period. The problem is that major league baseball is so competitive with so many pratfalls that can derail a player, that sustaining the improvement is not a given. A lot of times they don't but sometimes they do and that's why the analysis is done and not dismissed.

The Blue Jays are pinning quite a bit of hope on some young pitchers. Osuna and Castro made the team, both 20, neither have pitched above A+ ball. And then there is Norris and Sanchez.
