Cafardo is at it again in today's Sunday Notes: Ross is the backup to Miguel Olivo, but the Cubs also have Welington Castillo, whom they hope to move in a trade. What is wrong with this statement boys and girls?

If Ross isn't the back up and Castillo isn't gone, Theo will get his ear chewed off.

I blame the editor more than the writer. Slip ups like this happen, but no way should it make it into print.

Miguel Olivo? Montero!!!! That would be an interesting tandem. They'd need to bring in Pierzinski from Atlanta as honorary coach to hone their special skills.

BJ Upton is now going by Melvin Upton, Jr. Think he knows that his stats for the last few years will follow him even though he changed his name?

Or scarcity:). I bet if Sox knew they could bid on top amateur every year (or get three hitters at 5 mil each) they would not pay a premium when this opportunity comes up. Draft suppresses fmv, but Moncada illustrates the over inflation that occurs.

It's one thing to compare bonuses up front, but we also have Moncada for a while and the cost of each pick for that time may cost a bit too.

I believe the $63.5 is the grand total of the signing bonuses for the last 11 1-1 draft picks in MLB. ADD: I also think that if the market was totally open bid, ie, no draft, the 1-1's would get significantly more but on the other hand, not as much as Moncada because of the scarcity component. Therefore, this can't be used as the benchmark for what the market would be.

That seems so unlikely now with how big-corporation-friendly the Supreme Court and Congress has gotten in recent years. I don't think that has nearly as much to do with what would happen as the fact that the court will need a reason to overturn precedent. "It's a bad precedent" isn't enough. As the article says, SCOTUS has had the opportunity to overturn the exemption in the past and hasn't done so.

...which starts to give us some idea of the real market price for top-flight young talent. That is only if there is full-fledged free agency for every young player. And if that happened, the prices would likely go down because there would be more than 1 good player to bid on.

As the article says, SCOTUS has had the opportunity to overturn the exemption in the past and hasn't done so. Yeah, the Roberts Court (and the Rehnquist one preceding) has overturned plenty of precedents ... but there's usually a compelling ideological reason for it, and this doesn't really have one. So, I guess I'm saying that I think you're both right. MLB's probably pretty safe. This court doesn't really feel compelled by anti-trust arguments to overturn precedent, I think.
