After watching Sandoval's home run yesterday, I looked at videos of his swing last year and this year because the stroke on his home run seemed to be on a different plane than what we've seen so far. For whatever reason, he seems to be chopping at the ball more this year than previous years, which has lead to a big decrease in FBs and increase in GBs. Hopefully he gets out of that funk now, because if he elevates the ball more, he would pepper the monster with a lot more frequency. Just a little thing to keep an eye on.
As a team, we have the 5th highest GB rate in baseball (48.8%) and 6th highest IFFB% (13.2%). As soon as Ortiz and Napoli get it going somewhat more, that should change, but those rates make for some boring offense.

How come Holt isn't leading off? Especially against a RHP, he should be the top guy, with Mookie a bit deeper in the lineup. Take some pressure off the younger kid, and get the extra at-bats for the hottest guy on the team.

Because having three lefties in a row in your lineup is good for the pace of play (other team doesn't need to change pitchers too often).

Point taken, but to be fair (and less amusing), they would pinch hit for at least two of those guys (hopefully Sandoval and Nava) if a LOOGY came in.

I'm starting to think my prediction of 85 wins is too high.

Who's the pinch hitter, Justin Masterson? Anyway, you'd think the BABIP gods had had their fun yesterday and enough would be enough but noooooo...

Well, Kelly on pace to go 3 innings. An average outing for the Sox pitching staff this year.

That was a Vazquez-level throw.

This team is unbearable. I would love it if each pitcher got boo'd every time they took the mound. What an utter disgrace.
Remember when people on this board thought quality starts was an over-rated statistic? I know I was one of them. I never thought I'd see the day where I was praying for 6 IP with 3 ER. What a freaking accomplishment that is with this staff.
If everyone was pitching awesome, I'm sure NESN and everyone would be all over Farrell and Nieves for getting the most out of this group, so tell me, why aren't they getting any criticism? I thought being a pitching guru was part of the allure of bringing Farrell in? Certainly it's not his horrendous in-game managing?

Take some pressure off the younger kid, and get the extra at-bats for the hottest guy on the team. I wouldn't move Mookie yet. Not worth risking him losing confidence. Also I think the lack of pressure in Holt's case helps Holt be what he has been, which is the 22nd most valuable player in baseball so far. Surprised fangraphs hasn't put out an article on him yet, like they do with most Sox players. Brock boasts a gaudy LD% from 2014-today, but very low FB%. I think his BABIP is always going to be high (.330+), is just a matter of him finding the gaps in the OF because he'll never be a HR hitter. I've always been pretty skeptical of him. Last year, he completely fell off in the 2nd half while posting nearly identical batted ball numbers. His batted ball numbers actually improved in the second half, as he turned half of his IFFB to grounders (3% difference). The big difference that stands out is that Holt struck out a lot more in the 2nd half of the year (went from 18% to 22%). Looking at Holt's 2014 heat maps, he didn't make good contact down and in or up and away, but got pounded low and away rather than those cold areas. So I don't think that pitchers made some huge adjustment, like the obvious exploitation that we saw in Bogaerts' case. Looking at his plate discipline stats, his O-contact and Z-contact both are way up this year as of right now, and his O-sing% is down 4%, which is good. Perhaps Holt started chasing more pitches out of the zone in the 2nd half of 2014. But for whatever reason, he was making a lot less contact than he is right now. Hopefully he keeps making contact.

Good news is Sanchez looks just as bad as Kelly today, and Wright can eat some innings if it doesn't get much better.

Evaluating them by their BABIP in a 1 inning sample is tremendously stupid. Oh yes, because each pitcher has a long track record of success, yes? Masterson is clearly cooked, Buchholz is Jackal and Hyde, Milley is coming off a mediocre season in the NL, Kelly was mediocre last season, and Porcello has had exactly 1 year of success. I like the chances of Porcello and Kelly turning it around to be at least useful back of the rotation pieces, but if you're watching the games, luck doesn't make you incapable of finding the strike zone against an inept offense like Kelly did last week. They're in last place in every pitching category and everyone knew coming into the season that the rotation was a question. Now all they've done was make it look worse than anyone initially thought. Not one guy has stepped up to stop the bleeding.
