goes to show you how bad Victorino body is When he is a defensive replacement... of course theirs no arguing because of how good JBJ is! but still for 13 million to be replaced in the 9th inning says something.

Using Koji in the bottom of the 9th in a tie game makes me slightly less annoyed with Farrell

Don't know if I like bringing Koji in now, especially with a lefty on deck

Damn that was one of those that looked a lot better off the bat then it really was. Up and down the West coast are some of the toughest ballparks in the majors. Different environment at night than during the day, also. Very low HR totals. Everything dies at night. Add: Nice win. They beat the Athletics at their own game with timely hitting, a lot it going the other way, and an endless supply of relievers at one inning or less.

No doubt Mookie is the best player on this team.

I give the over/under of a Victorino DFA or trade (for a bucket of used balls) to be 11 games.

Quick notes:
- Mike Napoli won this game. What an amazing catch to save 2 runs. - While the use of Tazawa/Breslow was as bad as ever, gotta give credit for the "bring Koji in when men get on base" strategy. I've often wished for that. - With the bullpen having to provide 6 innings and Steven Wright pitching none of them, it definitely seems like there's a plan in place. A plan that Justin Masterson should be worried about.

This is a game the kids helped win, Xman,Swihart and Betts all had two hits. Barnes and Layne pitched good. Maybe there a couple more down there that can help? Starting rotation? Also like to see Noe Ramirez get a shot.
I am a Xman binky but. I agree I hope he develops more power but he has gotten a lot of late game hits. Good Win.

No sense in keeping JBJ on the bench in the bigs, when he can be getting good at-bats in AAA. One of Rusney/Vic will get hurt. You just bring JBJ back up and don't lose a player.

For as bad as he's been versus LHP, Sandoval is absolutely slaughtering RHP. His overall .302/.372/.448 line is pretty great, and versus RHP, having him hit fifth in the lineup really lengthens it out. He'll be vulnerable to LOOGYs in late and close situations, though, which is not ideal, especially since Farrell is probably not going to pinch-hit much for him.

Rick Porcello's ground ball rate is now down to 41.9%, which is almost 10% lower than his career average (51.8%) and well below the league average (usually 45%ish). He's now throwing about twice as many four-seamers as two-seamers (the opposite of what he's done during most of his career), and his zone profiles show that he's pitching more up in the zone. He's gotten more Ks with this new approach, but his strikeout rate has regressed to closer to his career marks since I last looked at it, and I'm starting to think he's gone too far in this direction.

It's almost as if bringing in your WORST RELIEVER to face the HEART OF THE ORDER with a one run league in the seventh inning is a TERRIBLE IDEA. God, **** Farrell with a chainsaw. Amazing the Sox snatched victory from the jaws of an almost certain managerial-inspired defeat here. I don't get the Breslow love. He should be on mop-up duty at this point.

The Sox mimicked the SF and Oakland teams in their pitcher usage last night, with lots of situational changeouts. The game could have turned a few times, but good defense kept that from happening.
Meanwhile, the kids came through. Just one game, but they played like a better team, with batters not trying to mash so much as meet the ball.
Also, both teams worked hard to stretch the starting pitchers, taking a lot and chasing both before the seventh inning. Long game. It played like many on the West coast do when they go late into the night.

Kazmir looked great tonight - he's a FA after this year? Yep. Xander doing his best tonight to cement his #1 spot in soft %. I really, really hope the hitting coaches are trying their best to transform him back into the hitter he was in 2013 and the early part of 2014. That version of Xander has outside sliders as his kryptonite though. It wasn't going to work.

I just finished watching the game and had the same thoughts. And not hitting for Victorino against a RHP and then replacing him with JBJ the next inning...

They had 3 LHH and a catcher on the bench last night. One more reason that Holt should be starting virtually every night, and also Vic should be on the bench.

Plus, it'd be kind of a stoppable force meeting a moveable object ... a LOOGY is a LHP who can't consistently get RHB's out, and Sandoval is a RHB who can't consistently hit LHP. It'd be like dropping down to the Carolina League for an at-bat. I almost can't wait to see it ...

No doubt Mookie is the best player on this team. He's on pace for about 8.8 bWAR or 6.3 fWAR, and he's sporting a .252 BABIP with a 27% line drive rate. He could end up with a monster season once that works itself out.

Holt has very neutral splits and I'd be pretty comfortable with him hitting for Sandoval versus a LHP, especially in situations where getting a single is extra important (e.g., tied game, two outs, runner on second).
