Huh, so Trey Ball is getting skipped. Fair 'nuff. Looks like the swap was made (or at least relayed to Kevin Burke) yesterday.

Aro and Gunkel promoted to Pawtucket, Portland, respectively.

Aro is Rule 5 eligible, as is Pat Light. Have to think Light won't be too far behind, once a spot opens up.
Without the benefit of last week's "Notes from the Field", I would have said that Alcantara would be the odds-on favorite to take Gunkel's spot. Maybe Shep?

Could just be Dahlstrand off the DL. I do think Shepherd could handle Salem though, and don't necessarily think Alcantara could, based on what I saw.
Shepherd's numbers are weird, as 10 of the 16 hits he's given up have been in two appearances, which were 4.1 innings total, but looking at the PBPs, it doesn't look like it was necessarily bad BIP luck. His BABIP of .349 isn't terribly high. But hey, BIP data in the minors is such a crapshoot it's not worth thinking much about.
I'm interested to see what they do with Gunkel, who is lined up with Cuevas' spot in the rotation. Cuevas is listed as taking his next turn in the Portland game notes, for now.

Good news is that Castillo is back in the line up today.
Hopefully no more delays and we can see him in Boston soon, if Victorino continues to struggle.

Chandler Shepherd promoted to Salem as the Joe Gunkel counter-move, per Salem Red Sox.

Callahan following Jimenez tonight makes me think that Karsten Whitson taking Shepherd's roster spot might be the next move in the chain.

Callahan following Jimenez tonight makes me think that Karsten Whitson taking Shepherd's roster spot might be the next move in the chain. I had a similar thought when they demoted Fernandez, and think you're right on. Technically, Pinales being reactivated from his paper move filled Shepherd's spot in the bullpen, but with Gunn and Harris getting added to the Greenville roster recently, it does feel like the wave of guys who were in XST and are going to the SAL are getting moved up, doesn't it. As for Callahan, wow. Part of me wonders if this is just a temporary thing so he can get his head on straight, or if it's an actual move to the bullpen. It's not even like he was in a piggyback role tonight. 30 pitches.

Brian Johnson is telling Ben & Co. that he's ready for the show. Yeah, nice game ... 8Ks 0BBs in 6.2 innings, good stuff from Johnson. I'm really interested to see how his stuff translates to MLB when he gets there.

Curious for the scouts' perspective on Johnson, are there things he still can improve on in AAA or is it more a matter of just getting more experience against better hitters and knowing what elements of his repertoire work/don't work against them?

It's a good question, but one you probably have a better chance of getting answered if you submit it to the SoxProspects podcast.

Since I'm not on the podcast and not a scout, my two cents is that he just needs more experience period. Like going through tough spots like getting squeezed by the ump and giving up crap hits and not losing it and getting mad and limiting damage. By getting through 5-6 innings without having his stuff.

It's very tempting to say that he needs to tighten up his command and get more consistent with his breaking pitches ... I don't actually know anything because I haven't seen him, but even still, I'd probably end up correct since that's what everyone says about just about anyone pitching in AAA.

Brian Johnson is telling Ben & Co. that he's ready for the show. Ben seems invested in the SP they have currently. Glad to see a few good starts by the staff this week, but not sure if it will continue. It might take 5 Perfect games for Johnson or Rodriguez to get called up. I see both as having way more potential as SP than Wright.

Maybe more potential, but Wright is the most prepared right now.

Maybe more potential, but Wright is the most prepared right now. If throwing more innings in the minors equates to being prepared. I believe Johnson is a better option at this moment and for the future.

So we disagree.
You are clearly a huge Johnson fan.

So we disagree. You are clearly a huge Johnson fan. I watched him in college. Now that he is able to concentrate on pitching only, you see a good amount of growth. While I am a big fan, I also like Rodriguez and see a higher ceiling for him. Wha t I think separates Johnson from Wright is consistency. I am interested to see if Johnson is as cool under pressure if and when he makes the jump.
