Gunkel is due for 10 K today against all the righties Altoona will send out.
Gunkel v. Moroff, matchup of the day. Clash of the titans.

Gunkel was impressive in his debut last week (relief appearance). A few hard hit balls, but most hits were scratch types. Misses bats.
Did he tire a bit after a few innings?

Gunkel was impressive in his debut last week (relief appearance). A few hard hit balls, but most hits were scratch types. Misses bats. Did he tire a bit after a few innings? Possible. May also have been BABIP'ed to death: Entered in 3rd with 2 out: 3rd: P2 4th: 1B-LF, K, K, K (all swinging) 5th: 1B-SS, (SB), K, K, 2B, K (third K swinging) 6th: P6, 1B LF, 1B RF (runner scores on the throw?), BB, 1B RF (9-5 gets runner trying to go 1st to 3rd), 5-4 forceout Three singles to the outfield makes me think he had some poor luck in addition to tiring a bit. I also bolded the LHB.

Any idea why Castillo is playing strictly CF now? This will be 7 in a row after mixing it up earlier in the year.

Any idea why Castillo is playing strictly CF now? This will be 7 in a row after mixing it up earlier in the year. Because getting Brentz, Craig, Cecchini, and Shaw into the lineup takes precedence over playing Quintin Berry, who is the only non-Castillo option in CF with JBJ in Boston. EDIT: There have been a couple games where they both start and Rusney is the one in center. I wouldn't make much of it, other than the team wanting to get a good look at Castillo at a premium position. I think it's pretty clear that he will (and should) play RF in Boston, with Betts sticking in CF.

Seemed to me getting him more familiar with the angles off the bat in RF should take precedence.

Berry has been in the lineup 4 of the 7 games, including tonight. www.soxprospects.com/stats/lineup.php?team=533&year=2015&date=0521In those games: LF: Cecchini 4, Berry 2, Craig 1 RF: Brentz 4, Berry 2, Craig 1 Interestingly, Brentz has played his last 7 games in the OF in right. Before that, he'd played mostly LF in deference to JBJ, Castillo, and Berry. The PawSox have had to finagle the lineup so as to get the 9 bats they want in the lineup. Cecchini has mostly been a LF recently and Shaw was playing mostly 3B until Jimenez showed up and became the priority play over Montz.

Absolutely. For a prospect site, figuring out who's playing where and how often really rounds out the picture of what we might expect going forward. Very useful.

I used to (try to) keep track of that by hand. Lineup order too. I'm sure it will surprise no one when I say that I kept up with it much better while either single or in a long-distance relationship.

Taking a look at Gunkel's start (LHB's bolded)
1st: 5-3, 1B (LD9), BB, F8, K(sw) 2nd: BB, bunt 1B, 1-5 (failed SAC), 6-3 DP 3rd: K(sw), 4-3, 2B (FB7 - Josh Bell), BB, L9 4th: 1B (LD7), 1B (GB9), K (fouled strike 3 on bunt), K(sw), 1B (LD8), K(sw) 5th: BB, P4, P3, K(lk)
So by my count:
RHB: 3-14, BB, 4 K (just one hit in the air of the three) LHB: 3-6, 2B, 3 BB, 2 K (all three hits struck well, probably)
Masterson 2.0?

Looks like McAvoy got rattled in the third, but still, of the four hits he gave up, three went in as ground balls (although one was a double, to which I ask, is that really a ground ball?). Single, goroundout, then HBP, BB, BB to make things difficult, then the groundball double and a single to plate 4.
Too bad, he was looking like a potential POTM candidate.

Maybe... Usually when I see a ground ball double in the game log I figure it was one of those bounders down the line that the first baseman/third baseman can't get to.

I'm sure the fans in Portland enjoyed Gunkel's arrival in AA .... he didn't skip a beat. Sign me up for the fan club.

Well, looks like Denny Bautista gave the Riverdogs fits. I'd be hyped if the Sox just left him down there to make low A hotshots cry.

Well, looks like Denny Bautista gave the Riverdogs fits. I'd be hyped if the Sox just left him down there to make low A hotshots cry. As a veteran of 7 MLB seasons, I sure hope he would. Gotta think he's moving up (and I'll speculate for the 8th time or something that this would finally be the time that Karsten Whitson gets assigned to Greenville).
