Gameday shows Barnes hitting 98 in his last two pitches in the 3rd. I don't recall him throwing that hard previously.

He looked about as good as Miley yesterday, but all of Miley's balls in play were right at guys. Miley allowed only four hits in eight innings despite only striking out two people. He had his lowest swinging strike percentage of the season on the day when he delivered his best box score line of the season. One day you get lucky, the next day you get unlucky. I'm really not sure what your point is. I was a lot less excited about Miley yesterday than anyone here and a lot less angry at Kelly today. So many overreactions in both directions.

The expected number of outs Kelly would've gotten with that line was about 7.5 You'll excuse me for double-checking. Kelly gave up 6 GBs, 5 FBs (of which one was an IFFB), and 2 LDs. According to www.fangraphs.com/library/pitching/batted-ball/ we have the following averages on those: GB .239 LD .685 FB .207 As I understand it, FB here includes all IFFB, which are 11% of the FB. Let's say that all IFFB are outs, and rescale the average to only NIFFBs. .207 * (100/89) = .233. So the expected number of hits is .239*6 + .685*2 + .233*4 = 3.736 And the expected outs correspondingly 9.264. If his line was 3.0 IP 4 H 1 BB, I would expect him to have given up about 1 run.

And one of those line drives was hardly like a real line drive.

Nice outing for Barnes thus far, 5 K's.. Throwing hard and locating his pitches consistently.

Of course this offense is going to make Ricky Nolasco look good.
Seriously Ortiz, stop sucking.

I can see an uncomfortable situation developing next winter when the Red Sox make it clear that they'd rather not have Papi back in 2016. If he doesn't hit, he's a load to carry financially and roster-wise.

If we're going to call all IFFBs outs, then we should also call all home runs home runs... EDIT: When a pitcher faces 14 batters, allows a home run, walk, and 12 balls in play, and you say that the expected outcome is one run allowed, you see why that creates skepticism, right?

If he doesn't hit, he's a load to carry financially and roster-wise. If Ortiz has 425+ PAs, his 2016 option will vest at a number between $11-$16mm, depending on the final number of PAs. Ortiz has played 41 of BOS' first 45 games, with 177 PAs. At this rate, he will be vested at $16mm next year. He has a complete no-trade, based on 10/5 rights, and I don't see either team forcing a trade. I think next year (age 40) will be it for him, regardless.

I give James a lot of credit trying to debate posters who only want to pontificate. I also wish all could see the posts that get deleted somehow.

Going to be annoying listening to people talk about removing Kelly from the rotation.

I also wish all could see the posts that get deleted somehow. Take it from me - you don't want to do this. I have lost a lot of brain cells over the years reading the "noise" that gets posted and subsequently deleted in this forum. This is not to say that all "noise" gets deleted, it doesn't. The signal-to-noise ratio fluctuates wildly from season to season.

Why is Nava still getting significant at bats?

Why is Nava still getting significant at bats? Because he has a career .795 OPS, .354 wOBA, and 121 wRC+ against RHP and can play LF, RF, and 1B. Not amazing by any means, but pretty good platoon player. And also, he serves as depth so we can keep both him and JBJ in the organization.

The Lackey trade is starting to look real bad. Actualy worse than that. He is the type of guy that the FO is going to try and acquire. And it's going to cost us at least one significant prospect package. SO it looks like this
Lackey and his $500k + prospect package = lackey replacement and his salary+ Joe Kelly + 25.5M
