How bad is Hanley's D and what can the RS do about it?

BC should get canned if this season is a last place team. In a crappy division!! As stated elsewhere, the AL East is the only division in which the Red Sox would be in last place with their current record. I would definitely not say it's a crappy division - it's a middling division with great parity. Last place in the AL East is 3 games out. In four of the other five divisions, 3 games out means you're in at least third place, if not second. No team is running away with it, sure, but no team has fallen completely out of it either. I get that everyone is freaking out about "last place," but the sentiment from the national baseball media that the team in this division that helps itself more in June/July will take it seems spot on given the margin between the five of them right now. And as I've said (along with general sentiment) since this spring, no team is set up to help itself more than the Sox, whether it's internal promotion or trade. EDIT: One more note: 6 of the 15 American League teams are farther away from a playoff spot than the Red Sox are. In the NL, 7 of the 15 are farther away. So 13 of the 30 teams in baseball have more work to do to make the playoffs than the Red Sox. Are they a flawed team? Sure. Guess what though - they don't have to do much to be a playoff team.

And hopefully as the team with the best ranked offense going into 2015 won't continue to be 22nd in the league with a 89 wRC+ through the rest of the year.

Reaching and getting over .500 would help. If they can find a little "Morgan magic" in the second half, they can take the division. I think somebody will emerge enough to win 90 games. The division certainly has that 1988 - 1990 vibe about it.

That first gif. LOL. Xander is so used to expecting Hanley to mess up something that he runs all the way to mid-LF. Hanley in LF has reached the point of comical now. I'm mostly a Cherington apologist, but if he doesn't take Hanley out of LF next season, he's falling asleep at the wheel.

Hmm, two things: The article does not really differ between Fenway and road games. Aside from the gif at the angels much of the misplays are a result of the wall. I don't watch nearly enough games to judge, but wasn't he playing better recently and especially on the road?

Watching a train wreck.
The season is really not going to get a lot better, but I'm wishing that they can move him to first base. Sadly, but importantly, they need to find a home for Mike Napoli by August 1st. I'm sure most of us don't want Cherington to keep up the charade that Hanley is improving in left. Somehow Hanley seems to have a very low baseball IQ. He doesn't have a plan A, let alone a plan B. You could probably ask for time, run out to left, and ask him how many outs there are.....and get the wrong answer 5 times out of 10. Manny was a lot like that. They seem to lack focus. They have little understanding of what they will do if situation X happens. They haven't given it any thought. Luckily hitting came easily for Ramirez.
Certainly he should be a DH, but with Papi it can't happen quite yet. Ortiz will probably be back for one more season. Hanley needs to be moved to first for several reasons, but one is to have a "position" to play when inter-league play is upon us in 2017 and beyond.

I've seen a few mentions of him at 3b and Sandoval at 1b next season that "at least Hanley played the IF before" being the reason. Just remember that he was also one of the WORST in the game at SS, never got entirely over that nasty, double clutch habit he picked up at Miami in LA and not.. Move him to 3b? Further away from 1b for throws, where that double clutch on throws can cost more time for runners heading to 1b? Careful what you wish for is all am saying, him in LF has been getting better as the season has advanced, Hanley at 3b is (IMO) a nightmare best avoided, or anywhere else, other than possibly 1b.

In his last 42 games he's been "only" -14 R/150, after being -47 over his first 38. He's gone from unimaginably bad to merely ordinarily bad, and one could imagine him playing -10 defense next year, which would be acceptable if he hit, though not really a good idea. They still need to try him at 1B.

Napoli can be placed on waivers and moved if Hanley shows he could handle 1B.

If he is capable at either spot, then an OF of Castillo, JBJ and Mookie would rival KC's defensive OF. Maybe better? Still think Rusney is an impact bat too. If so it would also be a good offensive OF group, assuming JBJ is just average.

I was generally against trying Hanley at first, but at this point what does it matter? It can't hurt our 2015 season. I'd move him to 1B for the remainder of 2015 once they move Napoli, and get some more playing time for JBJ in the outfield. Let's see now if he could handle 1B while getting an extended look at our younger outfielders. Gives us more insight for two questions for the 2016. Worse case is he is a LF/DH next year, and he'll finish his contract as the DH once Ortiz retires.

If attention is his problem and it appears to have a role in his problems, then firstbase may not be the answer. He actually can do more damage at first as he'll be involved in alot more plays. I think he's a DH and no more. Papi is likely coming back for another yr. I think they may try him at first next year but I bet it's as bad as LF was this year. The thing is Ortiz is hitting better than Hanley for a fraction of the cost so next year they'll either keep Hanley in left or attempt to convert him to a firstbaseman.

They still need to try him at 1B. Alas, that was a hot streak. Also, I was using straight games played rather than innings, and he's come out of some games defensively. He was -51 R/150 when this thread was started, and he's been -23 since, which is still beyond awful. His arm and good versus bad plays have each improved from about -12.5 to -3, but his range has only improved from -25 to -16. He'll lose 6 - 7 runs of offensive value moving to 1B. He has to be better than -16 there. I mean, c'mon. Since we need a 1B, leaving him in LF is not a defensible option, no pun intended.

leaving him in LF is not a defensible option, no pun intended. Agreed, and based on his comments (referring specifically to his talking about Bradley, Betts, and Castillo) Dombrowski appears to realize that. Cherington seemed to as well based on his comments this weekend.

I don't think giving Hanley a glove is defensible. If they can't dump him, playing him twice a week at DH, resting Papi in his 41st year, and playing Hanley one or two games a week in the field, is my hope. What a mess.

I would totally trade him for Josh Beckett again.

Ramirez is probably Dombrowski's first order of business. It was interesting to read that he'd wanted the Tigers to trade for Bradley, and that's when JBJ wasn't much more than a defensive highlight reel, albeit a spectacular one. The guy shows up to take over as the overlord of operations and JBJ proceeds to kill it offensively while adding to his defensive portfolio. He's also got Betts, the team's WAR leader, and Castillo who seems to be finding his hitting stroke, and who has the arm for right if that's where they want to play him. This guy has been around the game for a very long time, and I'd lay money down that he knows what the immediate future of that outfield should look like. Let's see how quickly he can make it happen.
