You don't "tank" but you can use the rest of the season as a developmental year. Unfortunately for their draft position, Brian Johnson and Henry Owens would likely be an upgrade over some of their current SP. If they move on from some of the underperforming veterans and give the kids a chance, they might crawl back up to .500.

Are you saying that Losing with youngsters that could develop into good players is preferable to losing with over paid veterans that are clearly in either coast mode or a steep skills decline?

I took that as the young players will make them win more, which will hurt their draft pick.

If the season ended right now, BOS would have the 6th pick in the 2016 MLB draft:
1. PHI ---- (6-game losing streak) 2. COL -8.0 (4-game losing streak) 3. MIL -8.0 (7-game winning streak) 4. MIA -8.5 5. OAK -10.5 6. BOS -11.0 7. CIN -11.0 8. SEA -11.0 9. CHW -11.5 (4-game winning streak) 10. SDO -12.0 11. CLE -12.5
(tiebreaker order of the above teams is COL, BOS, CHW, PHI, CIN, MIA, SDO, MIL, CLE, SEA, OAK)

6 back in the division, 5 back for the 2nd wild card. 78 games to go.
8th or 9th pick, depending on the SEA/OAK outcome.

I believe Boston is now 11th, percentage points ahead of Cleveland, and out of a protected pick on there way to winning the division.

I did a sort and Boston has a .477 win percent and Cleveland a .476 so I went with it even though the games back number is the same. Wasn't sure which reigns supreme since Boston had played two more games.

They're not really tied though. Cleveland has two games in hand, so even though they're the same number of "games back," Boston's winning percentage is better. It wouldn't happen like this, but if the season ended today, Boston would have a better record.

If the season ended right now, BOS would have the 9th pick in the 2016 MLB draft:
1. PHI ---- (5-game losing streak) 2. MIL -9.5 3. MIA -10.0 4. COL -11.5 (4-game winning streak) 5. OAK -12.0 6. CIN -12.5 7. SDO -12.5 8. SEA -13.0 9. BOS -14.0 10. ATL -14.0 (5-game losing streak) 11. TEX -14.5 12. CHW -14.5 13. CLE -14.5 14. ARZ -15.0
(tiebreaker order of the above teams is ARZ, COL, TEX, BOS, CHW, PHI, CIN, MIA, SDO, ATL, MIL, CLE, SEA, OAK)
3.5 games separate #4 from #14.

BOS back to its "normal" 7th position.
2.5 games separate #5 from #14.

How are Ball, Chavis & Beintendi doing? (Yup Beintendi has not had a chance)
Not to mention Castillo and Moncada.....
My not so profound point being that it likely takes years for even the top-rated guys to get there, if they do at all. Except for Castillo, they are all circa 2017 & beyond.
Even so, since the Sox are not going anywhere .....the draft would be the palatable alternative....giving us something to root for.

Cannot believe we are in the same situation as last year. BUT we need to make the most of it. It looks like the next 5 to 6 games will decide that we are not buyers and hardly sellers because we have so little to sell. 12 days to the deadline. I would have to think Napoli and Victorino are going to be moved by then....probably just released. We will be doing the "audition" dance in August and September.....so our draft selection might even be better than #7.
It is getting harder and harder to say "yeah". I miss being in contention. I miss being the big bad Red Sox. Back to watching where will pick in June of 2016...hooray!

Cannot believe we are in the same situation as last year, BUT we need to make the most of it. I miss being in contention / I miss being the big bad Red Sox Totally agree w/ the first statement, while we need to be careful of the last one even though I totally agree as i'm sure everyone on this board does..."Needing to make the most of it" is the key...So, while not chasing a high draft pick, there's things we should be looking to do at the deadline (i.e. selling) that might provide a better pick next June...So I'm all for looking to 2016 w/ our trade deadline moves and will certainly take the benefit of a high pick should it assist us in that fashion...I just hope the Sox FO/Ownership understand that despite not wanting to be in this situation (another possible last place finish in the AL East) they need to plan from this point in time and not from a point in time when they hoped the season would have played out better...as that time is long gone.

When we sell, we need to keep Napoli. I would call up Craig, Castillo, Nava and have Holt pitch and catch. There seems to be a lot of competition to be one of the 10 worse teams. Remember our younger pitchers will have an innings limit, so that will help the Sox lose a few more games.

With really poor play down the stretch they probably can get the 2 position.

With really poor play down the stretch they probably can get the 2 position. We need to get lucky with a power arm. Not sure where we end up picking. But, hopefully we have better luck in our draft slot instead of just missing out on Sonny Gray or just no great pitching prospects there at 7 in 2013 and 2015.

I think I've finally thrown in the towel on the season. Losing 5-6 was the nail in the coffin.

With really poor play down the stretch they probably can get the 2 position. That might be ambitious. Beyond Philadelphia, Milwaukee really stinks too.

Maybe we should keep Napoli after all, and tell Farrell to use Breslow in every close game...those guys are too valuable to let go.
