Hassan was a surprise addition to the 40-man roster last night. He's currently ranked #47 on this site. He's been tagged as an interesting sleeper ever since being drafted (Sickels liked him, for one), as has 'slept' his way to the point that he's standing at the door of the majors. (I wouldn't say he's knocking at the door yet, just standing there.) I'm interested to hear what the latest is on his development and potential. Has his defense truly improved? Can he field both LF and RF as an everyday player? Will his superior on-base ability (.404 at AA, .377 AAA) translate in the majors? Can he improve his slugging? 48 xbh with Portland was a good sign, but only 7 hr and 13 doubles with Pawtucket. How are his baserunning / other baseball skills? Was he injured at the end of 2012, and how did that affect his performance? He had a .224 SLG post-All Star Break - no XBH - and was shut down mid-August. Pre-ASB he had a respectable line of .264 / .384 / .398 / .782. soxprospects.com/players/hassan-alex.htmwww.minorleagueball.com/2011/4/24/2128762/player-profile-alex-hassan-boston-red-sox#commentswww.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=572910

I would like to give him one more year. His track record is pretty good. Although he struggled a bit in AAA lots of prospects did as well including Youk. Let's see how he will improve his hitting next season.

The research shown in the Moneyball book seemed to push that good OBP skills translate pretty well to the majors. That being said, all that means is Hassan would be good at taking walks, not that he can hit for a good avg. So while his .390 OBP might not be matched in the majors, it would be safe to assume his OBP would be a good chunk higher than whatever batting avg he puts up.

First to go if the Sox sign Gomes?
Good to see a local kid (B. C. High) make the roster, though.

First to go if the Sox sign Gomes? Highly doubt it. Makes no sense to add and then drop. He's at least useful AAA depth for up to 3 years.

But they're going to have to drop someone if they sign a free agent, which they're apparently about to do. That's part of why I didn't think they would fill up the 40-man. Maybe the Sox will hold off until after Rule 5 to finalize the Gomes deal? Adding him in the first place made no sense. He might be the fourth-best outfielder in Pawtucket to start the year.

He might be the fourth-best outfielder in Pawtucket to start the year. History suggests they'll need extra OF on the 40-man roster, preferably with options. Would you rather add Bradley or Brentz (or Linares) as needed and bring them up in a reserve OF role? Maybe, but Ben made his decision, and I think there's some logic there. Just reading the tea leaves, I'm guessing they think Hassan has a chance to be a major league regular and they are extremely reluctant to add top prospects to the 40-man before it's necessary. The 40-man is crowded but it's not because of position players, at this point. Beato (and Gomez assuming we sign a 1B) are easy cuts for me, plus they'll be shedding a catcher and some major league relievers.

The point is that it's very unlikely he is going to be selected, and less likely that he would stick on a MLB roster for the whole season.

I'm just wondering whether what we think we know about Hassan is wrong. He has succeeded at every level in ~age-appropriate competition. This year he started out 0-fer but put up a .285 .396 .411 .807 slash from his first hit until his injury. Could the Sox have liked his performance enough to decide he's major league ready next year and is a good bet to be an adequate starting OF?
Isn't is possible that Theo or Beane also like the kid and would have no problem giving him a full year shot? We'd look pretty silly giving away talent for free when there is no real roster crunch imo (and they may have made some decisions on Sweeney/Kalish/Nava/bullpen that we don't know about).
I certainly wasn't expecting Hassan to be added but it's worth reevaluating Hassan if you think Cherington & Sawdaye usually know what they're doing. I guess we'll see how things shake out.

Is it possible that in Ben's trade talks multiple teams inquired about Hassan as a throw-in? Or maybe there are trade discussions including other OFs and Ben's thinks Hassan is needed as depth to fill-in.
On-face this doesn't seem to make sense, so I will give Ben the benefit of the doubt for now.
