Wow, didn't know Joel Pineiro was still active. He's been around forever.

He probably should have hung them up already. 36 years old in Double A. Yikes.

So I guess if we hear Johnson gets skipped late today he's taking Kelly's spot. If not odds point to Masterson if that change is made now.

I'm surprised that Espinoza was able to get to Florida so quickly. I think last year with Devers, it took like a month after it was announced to make it.

Just a possibility here (no inside info or anything), but if the team had him planned to only be in the DSL to get a few innings until the GCL season started, they probably had all of the visa paperwork moving so he was set to go quickly. On Pineiro, he always had a reputation as a real baseball rat so I'm not surprised he's turned into a lifer. Remember when the Red Sox thought he could be their closer in spring training '07, when Papelbon was trying to transition back to the rotation?

Just a possibility here (no inside info or anything), but if the team had him planned to only be in the DSL to get a few innings until the GCL season started, they probably had all of the visa paperwork moving so he was set to go quickly. It was reported last year that Devers was promoted on June 20 by Ben Badler, but our sources said it wasn't official. He was then promoted on July 2. So about two weeks after the first report, but there was never anything to suggest that they were struggling to get him to the U.S. or something. That said, that he was pulled from the game when he was finally promoted suggests there might be something to that ("Devers' visa's in, get him up here"), but he'd been in Extended prior, so Visas shouldn't have been the problem, you'd think. Anyway, I agree with James that this was probably the plan all along for Espinoza and Caceres, or at least for a couple weeks.

Why is that a stretch? Johnson due to start today and Masterson is up with the Sox right now.
Id rather have Wright start over Masterson but im expecting Masterson.

They may want to give him one more shot in the rotation? I have no idea what the internal feeling is on Masterson. If his velocity hasn't ticked up since the DL stint (and reports are that it hasn't) not sure why they'd expect result too much different than before. He also the opportunity to bolster the bullpen, and perhaps be a trade chip at the deadline if he can find some success there. Someone will find that valuable.

Id rather have Wright start Me too but unfortunately they blew that by optioning him... well I guess they could put Swihart on the DL to get him back up.

Sam Travis indeed promoted to Portland, per Alex Speier.

Guess which one is going to get the start, regardless of which one has the best chance of success time after time?

Guess which one is going to get the start, regardless of which one has the best chance of success time after time? This is slightly unfair. This front office understands sunk costs-- see, e.g., their DFAing of Mujica in May this year or their DFAing of Pierzynski last year.

I'm just saying they just went through all the trouble of giving him the choice of either getting called back up to pitch out of the bullpen or staying in Pawtucket for another rehab start. I think it's pretty clear at this point that they're ready to move on from him as a starter. It's not like they didn't know there was a possibility Kelly would suck in his next start.
Personally, while I wouldn't rule out the converse by any stretch, I think it more likely that Johnson gets a start than Masterson, at this point.

My guess is Dubon goes up to Salem. Could see Tellez going up as well if Longhi is healthy, except that he's not good either offensively or defensively right now and Salem has Martinez to play 1B.

This is the perfect time with Johnson and Kelly pretty much on the same schedule turn. Even with us performing badly way too much of the time, it is a treat to see our young kids doing quite well. I'd like to see Johnson get, at least, a couple of starts.

espinoza shows some poise right at the outset working through a jam in the 1st caused by poor infield defense as the first two hitters reached on ground balls hit to infielders (one error and another inf single) but escaped by inducing a double play and another groundnut to end the inning...came out second inning and got em order including his first GCL strikeout which was f the swinging variety, through two 1 hit 1k and 4/1 GB to FB...

Agree on Dubon. I wouldn't be shocked if Devers got the promotion as well. Amfox and Law were both quite impressed. Maybe it's a bit later in the year, though. But if he keeps up this hitting, he should probably get some time in A+ this year.

Espinoza's line through 5: 5IP 3H 0R 1BB 1K
Out of curiosity, how much greater is the competition level in the GCL from the DSL?
