Josh Pennington getting the start for the GCL Sox. And he K's 2 in the first inning. Now the GCL Sox doing their run scoring thing in the bottom of the first - 3 runs in. EDIT ADD: He's now done - 2IP, 4K's 2H and zero BB's. Excellent first outing coming back from TJ. He's an interesting guy, but he'll be on strict pitch counts all summer.

Happy Anderson Espinoza day, again! He's pitching again for the GCL Sox. 1 run in 1 inning. I'm thinking the boxscore is a mistake

The GCL Red Sox have decided to pitch Anderson Espinoza every inning of every game, because he is just that good.

What do we know about Roldani Baldwin? i noticed him putting up decent numbers in the DSL last year and it looks like hes continued that in his first couple games in the GCL.
Wondering more about his defense, if hes a legit catcher or more of a third baseman.

It's predictably been corrected to be Carlos Caceres, but only after he gave up runs, tipping them off that it simply couldn't be Espinoza out there.

Josh Pennington getting the start for the GCL Sox. Nice on Pennington and a pretty quick R&R from return for a pitcher was it not? 1 year for a pitcher? Or is that just the best results for a pitcher? Edit: In automotive industry.. R&R is Rebuild and Return, not Rest and Recuperate...

Well, keep in mind that it's 1 year before being back to throwing rookie-level minor league games. You could consider him as being on a rehab assignment right now, in theory. If he were building back up to going starter-length outings in the majors, then he wouldn't be back yet. Consider, for example, that Jose Fernandez had the surgery on May 16 last year and began his rehab assignment on June 6 this year. He won't come off the DL until July, but he was pitching before that, and he probably was throwing in Extended (and could've done a two-inning rookie ball outing) before starting his rehab. It's all relative. It is good to see that the process went to plan though, at the very least.

GCL Sox score 2 in the bottom of the 8th to take 5-3 lead. Trevor Kelley comes in for the save and after giving up one run, pitches out of a jam, inducing a game ending DP (grounder to the pitcher) to end the game.
GCL Sox now 4-0.

The Sox top of the lineup: Castillo, Victorino, Hanigan, Peguero, Craig ... facing Ervin Santana. A lot of MLB in there.
Hank Owens with 6K/1BB, gave up 3 runs on 5 hits in 6.2, throwing 100+ pitches. OK outing.

Moncada 2 for 3, a walk, 2 sb and a error Also found it interesting that Moncada led off tonight, with Chavis batting in the 2 hole. Both have been towards the bottom of the lineup. Wonder if the shake-up is to get both of them going. Nice start to the 2nd half. Hope both of them get hot. As others have mentioned, Chavis really turned it on late last season.

Jerez well deserved? 5 games at Salem and on to AA? Do we think he's actually turned some significant corner that he's pushed to what often is the Waterloo of levels for minor league players so rapidly? Anyone know what's really going on here?

I can't say with any certainty, but I have an idea: Jerez is physically mature and filled out AND he's Rule 5 eligible - so right there that eliminates one reason they would commonly be cautious, and adds an extra reason to be aggressive. With those factors in mind, they can worry strictly about hitting developmental checkpoints. If Jerez is showing what he needs to stuff wise, then challenging him with a Double-A assignment makes a lot of sense.
