Sandoval had to jump to hit that ball and still managed to hit a grounder. Unbelievable.

I'm OK with Hanley staying a little bit longer away from this team.

Wonder if it's about time to get into the pen. Buch starting to give up some very loud contact.
Hopefully he can get through this inning for us.

Guys I'm starting to think Ortiz might not be very good against lefty pitching.

Farrell's refusal to ever pinch hit for Leon should get him fired alone.

Guys I'm starting to think Ortiz might not be very good against lefty pitching. Same with Sandy Leon, but we'll need to see about 200 more PAs to be sure.

Absolute joke.
Screw you Farrell. I don't care about the short bench. You play to win.

Leon isn't very good against lefty pitching, righty pitching, hitting tees, or that guy with no arms who threw out the first pitch for the Giants with his foot a little while back.

Hanley would have caught that effortlessly.

Ace bait perhaps too barring a great run, which sounds appealing.

Great job by Clay against a tough line-up.
My suggestion for watching Leon. Check other games when he's batting. Helps keep my blood-pressure down anyway.

Buchholz now has a 2.67 FIP (8th amongst all qualified MLB starting pitchers) and a 3.19 xFIP (20th). He's pitching now essentially as well as he did in 2013 and yeah, at a borderline ace level. (Of course, the better he pitches, the more the back of my brain is thiking "sell high." But that's another matter...)

Seems like when Leon is catching our pitching staff is giving up less than four runs per game and isn't Leon among the league leaders in catching potential base stealers?

There were 148 starters with 40 or more IP this year, and he came into this game ranked 17th in xFIP- and 20th in league-adjusted SIERA; given the margin of error in both and looking at the individual numbers, you'd say he'd been the 19th best pitcher in MLB. But five of those guys have significantly higher ERA- than he does. Borderline ace or great #2 -- which, of course, is all that Jon Lester ever was. If there's any doubt about that, Cafardo's first two recommendations to fix the Sox in his column the previous Sunday were 1. Acquire an ace, and 2. Trade Buchholz. Will Woodward just tweeted: I would add: (3) Those who note that he had a 3.19 xFIP and 5.73 ERA in his first 7 starts, and a 3.18 xFIP and 2.13 ERA in his subsequent 9, and wonder WTF you're talking about. Pitching terribly with men on and terrifically with men on may well have some transient mental component, but it's not predictive and should be ignored when evaluating pitchers.

In evaluating pitchers or in predicting their future performance? Those two aren't orthogonal, but they are not the same thing
