GCL Sox win again, scoring 1 in the 8th and 1 in the 9th to break a 3-3 tie. The won with 6 hits (no xbh) and striking out 14 times. GCL Sox pitchers also K'd Orioles 12 times. Tons of whiffs today.
ADD: Basabe & Kemp with 2 hits each. Oliveras, who has been playing well, K'd 4 times today (and walked once).

At the PawSox game. Really unimpressed as a whole with the Yankees top prospect Severino. He throws fairly hard, but he looks a lot more like a reliever at the big league level than a starter.
Mike Miller has actually been impressive at 2B. Ripped a liner at the pitcher and made a few nice plays on defense. Reminds me a lot of Brock Holt.

rout is on in Pawtucket ... Scranton 14-2. Nava 1 for 3 Victorino not in lineup at Portland.
no 40-man move necessarily tomorrow when he is activated. he is on 15-day DL, not 60-day.

Have to love Kopechs line from tnite; 6ip 6h 1bb 1er & 5k. Longest outing of his young career, had gone 5 four times in his 13 starts this season. Most impressive, is his walk to strikeout ratio which sits at 63/18 in 56 innings following tonites start. And remember, hes the 2nd youngest pitcher in the league!!!

The New York-Penn league doesn't seem to be agreeing with Jake Cosart. Second weak outing in a row I've seen him pitch. Kirk Gibson's son Cam hit a grand slam off of him.

Also I just reached out to the hickory Crawdads beat writer on twitter who confirmed that Kopech was up to 101 in the first!!
@crawdadsbeat saw some fans tweet that he hit 101 in the first, is that true?! @jjab2233699 yes. 11 fastballs in 1st, all 99 & up. Delivery got out of whack in middle innings, but settled down in 5th & 6th
In addition I reached out to a fan who first tweeted about the 101 and here was his response: @tommypro25 was that 101 according to the stadium gun or yours/scouts? @jjab2233699 stadium gun hit it 3 times sat 97-99 most of game

Not trying to rain on your parade man but MiLB parks radar guns are not very reliable* *Still, he must be reaching the high 90s which is very good

Not trying to rain on your parade man but MiLB parks radar guns are not very reliable* *Still, he must be reaching the high 90s which is very good Yes I get that but all pitchers are subject to the same speed inflation at each stadium and few are hitting 100+ consistently in A ball so comparatively he his performing at an extremely high level. And although the readings may be a tick highat least they are verifiable peieces of data which speak to his high velocity... And just to clarify, I asked about stadium gun accuracy @crawdadsbeat anytime keep up the good work! last question if you dont mind...how accurate is the stadium gun? @jjab2233699 might be a tick high, but pretty close to what scouts have.

And on the other end of the pitching spectrum, Cole Sturgeon with 3 innings of one-hit ball for the win in extras for Portland.
It's one thing to bring in a position player to mop up, but 3 innings in a tie game? That ain't bad for a shot in the dark.
I suspect in a long game like that, he must have really had the New Hampshire batters fishing .....

I love it when the pitcher also puts up the offense that gets him the win.

ADD: Basabe & Kemp with 2 hits each. Oliveras, who has been playing well, K'd 4 times today (and walked once). Basabe also played in the GCL last year IIRC. Might be time for a promotion, as the Sox really aren't being challenged at all in their division.

Luis Alejandro spent all of 2015 in the DSL.

I still hold that we should refer to them as AlexB and SandroB. Someone's going to have to jump out of the GCL though if a)they keep winning and b)they aren't being challenged by the opposing teams.

Someone's going to have to jump out of the GCL though if a)they keep winning and b)they aren't being challenged by the opposing teams. Players don't get promoted from the team playing well, they get promoted by meeting individual goals. They've been winning because of their young pitching - guys like Espinoza and Bautista - and nobody on the staff is over nine innings yet. It's really a case of everyone on the team playing pretty well than being carried by one or two players who are so dominant that they are playing themselves out of the league.
