Layne should've been pulled as soon as he put a man on. He's gassed. So gassed he just struck out a batter.

There still seems to be a general resistance to using the team's best reliever in the highest leverage situations. Not really sure why that is. That said, good job by Barnes to get out of that.

Layne should've been pulled as soon as he put a man on. He's gassed. He's just not that good in the first place. He's an alright LOOGY having a good season, but he really shouldn't be third or fourth on a good team's BP depth chart.

So Farrell is allowing Barnes to get into trouble and he's got Breslow, of all people, warming up at what might amount to be the most important inning of the game. What part of we need to win every game we can don't you understand John? Tazawa didn't pitch all series against the Jays but it's Breslow who's up? I'm done with this guy.

sad but true - the Astros have a better pen than the Red Sox - and that's on Ben

And Craig "White Flag" Breslow comes in to make sure the Sox cannot win.

Is John Farrel giving us a farewell game to Breslow and Masterson? Because there's not explanation to what he's doing here.

Barnes has a great fastball, a decent slider and a poor curve. What he doesn't have is great command of any of those. Featuring a fastball down the middle of the plate to a hitter like Altuve is going to get you into trouble. He almost lucked out, but this isn't horseshoes.
Add: Hanley has a little of those Ramirez blood lines no?

Very nice feature on the Houston broadcast - they show pitch types thrown by the pitcher in the given count against the given batter handedness. For instance they just showed that Fields threw 100% fastballs in 2-1 counts against RHB and earlier showed Barnes throwing 20% fastballs and 80% curveballs (misidentified sliders?) in 1-2 counts against LHB.
Just wish they did it more consistently and with some indication of the sample size.
