40-man Roster Discussion (including Rule 5)
|
Post by jmei on Jul 3, 2015 17:00:26 GMT -5
Considering the additional names that need to be added to the 40-man this fall/winter (Vazquez, Workman off the 60-man, Owens/Johnson/Margot/Light definite Rule 5 adds, other interesting Rule 5 names (Buttrey, Jerez, Mercedes, Ramos), and only five pending FAs (some of which will need to be replaced)), a bunch of the fringy AAAA bullpen guys (Ramirez, Escobar, Hembree, Varvaro, Ross, Hinojosa, Aro) are at serious risk of DFA. Will be interesting to see who they decide to keep and who they decide to risk losing.

Slightly off-topic, but considering the additional names that need to be added to the 40-man this fall/winter (Vazquez, Workman off the 60-man, Owens/Johnson/Margot/Light definite Rule 5 adds, other interesting Rule 5 names (Buttrey, Jerez, Mercedes, Ramos), and only five pending FAs (some of which will need to be replaced)), a bunch of the fringy AAAA bullpen guys (Ramirez, Escobar, Hembree, Varvaro, Ross, Hinojosa, Aro) are at serious risk of DFA. Will be interesting to see who they decide to keep and who they decide to risk losing. Wouldn't be surprised to see Workman DFA'd. My 40-man plan as of 7/3pmGone: Masterson, Napoli, Breslow, Victorino, De Aza, Leon (DFA), Brentz (DFA), Coyle (outrighted), Cecchini (outrighted) Add from 60-man DL: Vazquez (let Workman/Varvaro go) Add: Johnson, Margot, Light, Owens, M.Hernandez, FA 1B, FA UT +1 Assume: Ortiz/Buchholz options picked up 2016 Red Sox roster:SP – Buchholz, Porcello, E.Rodriguez, Miley, Johnson/Kelly RP – Uehara, Tazawa, Ogando, Layne, Kelly/Johnson, Wright, Barnes PP – Betts, Pedroia, Ortiz, H.Ramirez, Sandoval, Bogaerts, Castillo/JBJ, Hanigan, [FA 1B]B – Holt, Vasquez, Nava, [FA UT]AAA: Swihart, Shaw, JBJ/Castillo, Margot, Marrero, M.Hernandez, Light, Owens, Aro, Hinojosa, Ross, Hembree, Escobar, N.Ramirez +1 I agree that several of the bullpen guys currently on the 40-man or anticipated to go onto the 40-man will change/be traded/etc. If the Red Sox become sellers, I'd expect Uehara, Ogando and Taz to be traded.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Workman DFA'd. I think Workman has positive trade value if healthy. I still maintain he could be a servicable #5 starter on a 2nd division team.

My thoughts: - I could see Coyle/Brentz DFAed, but I'd be pretty surprised if Cecchini was, even if he continues to struggle. He still has an option left and was a top-100-type prospect as recently as a year ago.
- I'd be surprised if Marco Hernandez is added. He's the kind of guy you pick up in MiLB free agency every year, and Marrero (and Holt) would be ahead of him on the middle infield depth chart.
- Even if some of the incumbent relievers are traded, I think they're likely to add at least one or two free agents relievers. While there are a lot of names on the RP depth chart, none of them other than Uehara and Tazawa have much of an established track record, and only Light and maybe Barnes project to be late-innings-types.

Cecchini - He'd be the third of the three that I'd DFA but, realistically, who's going to claim him. Even if Cecchini fixes the hit tool, it seems fairly obvious that he is positionally challenged. I doubt that any team would claim any of the three. Hernandez - He's 22, has a good glove and is having a very good season at Double-A. He likely profiles as a utility guy, but he's also likely to reach the majors. To me, it's a no-brainer picking between Cecchini and Hernandez. Relievers - Agreed. I expect to see multiple trades, plus once the Red Sox are out of the race I'd expect to see some tryouts. It's clear that they want to work Barnes up to higher leverage situations.

I think Coyle gets traded in July or August. Maybe as part of a bigger deal, but more likely as a PTBNL to a team who likes him.
I think Bradley is also extremely likely to get dealt. I think Betts is the center fielder long term, and there are just so many teams with a need there. I don't see his bat playing in the corner, and I think they can find bat who can pick up more runs at the plate than he gives up in the field to JBJ. I expect the A's to get him in a really confusing trade that I will hate.
I know Simon Mercedes is an interesting arm, but there's just not enough there for me to think he'd get protected at this point. I don't see him being ready to help in 2016, and right now I just don't see his long-term value being so high that you give up that 40-man spot for it.
EDIT: Regarding Cecchini - that dropoff has been so severe that I really feel like there is something else going on there. Where it's something the team has identified (or even can) I have no clue, but I think he's worth the 40-man spot to see if he bounces back.

But yeah, Billy Beane could be the guy to get it done.

Marco Hernandez 17th Error tonite in 59 games. I was not terribly impressed when I've seen him.
nobody will touch Ramos unless he shows something in the next 2 months.
