Welcome aboard Brian Johnson. Show us what you got! Long deserved promotion. Best of luck to Brian Johnson. Who hasn't thrown a pitch in a game in, what, 14 days? And it's his first big league start. Could be an interesting first inning.

"Speaking of Wright, he will be activated prior to his start in Game 2, making him the 26th player on the Red Sox roster. Boston will be able to use Wright tonight, then send him back down to Pawtucket immediately following the game, and bring him back up to start Friday's game against the Detroit Tigers" clnsradio.com/boston-redsox-news/item/12288-boston-red-sox-news-swihart-activated-leon-dfa-wright-extra-manSpeculation that Wright gets the Friday start. Yes, the 26th man can go back to AAA and be recalled at any time because he's not optioned today. 26th man rules are different.

Bummer. Giving Wright starts is a waste. I know some are huge fans of him, but he's gotten rocked at both levels lately. No reason to start him over Owens. He's worse and it would give Owens some valuable experience.

He's worse and it would give Owens some valuable experience. Not sure it's fair to suggest that it's been "at both levels." He had one bad AAA start, but he's otherwise been pretty great there (19% K, 6.8% BB, 3.03 FIP).

I'd rather he get at least 40 or so innings on the big league team this year. They probably don't want more than 180 this year. He's only given up 5.9 hits/9. You know what, screw Hamels, this is our guy.

In AAA, last three starts: 2 HR, 12 ER, 16 R total which I think is pretty important with knuckleballers because of pass balls. He hasn't been good over the past month, certainly not as good as Owens, and decision making has indicated that Wright has no future in this rotation long term. Owens does. It's less about Wright doing poorly and more about giving Owens a shot when he's equally productive as Wright (at least).

When he goes down, he risks passed balls or wild pitches. For Wright to be successful he needs to "command" his knuckle ball down in the zone. I don't care about movement as I do location for Wright. He is definitely pressing right now. I really want to see Owens. I think his experimenting is very nearly complete. He needs to bring what he has learned to the show. I think we all need something in the way of young pitching to look forward to.

Wright varies the speed of his knuckleball, from the mid 60s to low 80s. Most are in the 70s, but yesterday he was changing the speed of every pitch. It seems to work well when the ball doesn't hang over the plate, which it was doing some.
I'd rather see Wright as a relief pitcher. I think he can be more effective in that role.

As the saying goes when hitting against a knuckle baller.... if it's high let it fly, if it's low let it go.

I want to see Owens badly too, but he would likely only be marginally better than Wright this season. He hasn't even started to fully incorporate all his pitches (CH). If we continue to lose, there's no reason to rush Owens. Keep him in AAA until September, let him try and crack the rotation at the start of next season.

Agree, and why aren't they doing the same with their catcher? Swihart needs regular catching duties, not regular watching duties. Let him learn in August and September.

If nothing else, excited to see the young players play out the season. Hopefully Johnson has a solid start tonight.

You know what would be cool? If the guy hitting in front of Xander tried getting on base from time to time.

Hey Jordan Baker, call it both ways. Those are strikes at the bottom of the zone. Now this is going to lead to a big inning. Johnsons Curve looks good. Umpire sucks.
