So far, speculation is the Angels but I have not seen any confirmation.

Not a lot of upside here. Seems more like a replacement for Weeks at AAA than anything else.

Given the return on the trade, I'm guessing the Red Sox prioritized minimizing the cash (to try to move closer to the luxury tax threshold) over the prospect.
Let the Rusney Castillo era re-commence!

I think it's a decent return...guy is 26 and is batting .286 in AAA this year.
Brock-Lyte

So, Rusney is going to get playing time priority over Bradley the rest of the year?

Alex Speier @alexspeier 2m2 minutes ago Sources: Victorino has about $4.9M left in salary on 3-year, $39M deal; Red Sox will pay about $3.8M, with the Angels responsible for $1.1M.

Pretty awful return and they only eat 1.1M.
Meh. They could've just done this last year and saved themselves more.

Yeah, it'll really depend on the amount of cash that the Angels pick up. If it's more than a million or two, I'm fairly satisfied. Rutledge looks like a AAAA-type, but he at least has a little upside left. He had a breakout season for Colorado his rookie year (turns out it wasn't much of a breakout) and has puttered around since. Has played SS in the past, but had defensive issues there (and also at 2B). Has some power and speed. Depending on when he was added to the 40-man in 2012, he might have an option left, which would be handy.
ADD: a little disappointed that they couldn't unload more cash, but there was unlikely to be a robust market for Victorino, and a little saved cash (plus an open roster spot) is better than nothing. Plus, Rutledge is at least a little interesting still.
ADD2: I did my math wrong-- Rutledge should be out of options next year. Would have burned options in 2013, 2014, and 2015. Bleh.

So, Rusney is going to get playing time priority over Bradley the rest of the year? They mishandle Bradley then hold his performance over his head. We've mishandled him badly.

Here is to hoping this, in conjunction with other moves, paves the way for JBJ to prove in the last two months that he can hit at the major league level.

I don't doubt that Bradley is on the major league roster come August 1, but this move seems to indicate that Castillo is getting priority. Betts will play every day in center and Hanley most days in left, so it looks like there still won't be room for daily ABs for Bradley... which is crazy. We'll see if I'm wrong, but I'm not hopeful about their handling of JBJ at this point.

Informal roll call, would people rather see JBJ up here to prove he can hit with his new approach, or would you rather see if Castillo can harness his raw tools that made him a $72 million dollar man in the eyes of Cherington?

MaryK @waldosingst2 @brianmacp Seriously? We get a kid who likely won't see any time in Boston, and we still pay that much? So we could give Castillo time?
Brian MacPherson @brianmacp 17m17 minutes ago This is almost 100 percent about giving Castillo regular at-bats in the major leagues for two months, yes.

Castillo is up because he is RHH, as is ShaneO. When De Aza is traded, JBJ will be recalled if he is not traded first.

sure I liked to see Castillo at some point, but he needs more time in AAA where as JBJ does not.
