From the Orioles standpoint, a rainout doesn't sound so bad when the alternative is facing Espinoza and Steen.

Of course, that's a complete guess, as the Red Sox could throw literally any pitcher on regular rest at this point. I've given up projecting the GCL starters in the probables thread.
I'm sure the guys have been throwing on the side. I'd guess that they had some of the starters throw simulated games to get their innings in or something.
EDIT: 10 minutes before game time and they haven't postponed, so I assume they're playing?

Josh Norris @jnorris427 4m4 minutes ago Espinoza showed all three pitches in first inning. FB up to 98 with life away from LHBs. CB 76-77 w/tremendous bite and 82-83 CH. #RedSox

98 MPH on the fastball and 82-83 on the change? Is that even possible with the same arm speed?

Why isn't Espinoza striking more batters out with that velocity and advanced secondary stuff?

Josh Norris @jnorris427 I had high expectations for Anderson Espinoza. He exceeded them by leaps and bounds.

Why isn't Espinoza striking more batters out with that velocity and advanced secondary stuff? Generally, when this happens, it's either because he's throwing too many strikes (even if you have elite stuff, it's harder to get swings-and-misses in the strike zone) or because he's not throwing enough secondary pitches (same logic-- harder to get swings-and-misses with a fastball, no matter how hard it is).

Why isn't Espinoza striking more batters out with that velocity and advanced secondary stuff? A fair question, but note his 4.21 G/F ratio is elite: www.soxprospects.com/stats/pitching.php?split=0&page=1&sortby=GF&team=0&year=2015&type=1&min=10He doesn't just get ground balls, but he seems to be getting very weak contact. Consider that he induced multiple ground balls "to" the catcher today. At the level he's at, it's quite possible that a combination of great control and ok command is leading to batters just trying their damnedest to take cuts and they're making bad contact. I'll be keeping an eye on the K rate as he moves up, but if he's still inducing ground balls at a Masterson-level rate, I'm less concerned.

Game I saw he appeared to be throwing several change ups and not just FB's, now that was just one game covering 4IP's. Bad angle for judging perhaps, as wasn't directly behind the pitcher, though can determine what is a FB and what is not and looked like changes and not curve balls, though if they were they didn't appear to have much of a break from where I was in my scooter. When we go back in August, next time will get as close as can behind the pitcher when Espinoza is on the mound if it's at all possible to both line up the trip when he's pitching and can get my scooter there.

This, plus he's under 100 batters faced in the GCL. He's literally two K's away from 20%.

Moncada's now 21/22 on stolen bases this year. Wasn't there an article or something about some Cuban players having trouble stealing despite their speed? Given - it is Greenville but still it's pretty impressive.

I wasn't trying to imply anything bad. Especially considering I've never seen him pitch. Just read reports and box scores.
It was just a question I had.

98 MPH on the fastball and 82-83 on the change? Is that even possible with the same arm speed? If he's touching 98, he's probably averaging 95 or 96 at most, and that means he's got a 13 mph average separation, where 11 is average. That's very good separation.
