m.mlb.com/news/article/139249202Affiliations for the AFL were announced yesterday (Sox will play for the Scottsdale Scorpions this year). What better time to start speculation about who the Sox will send this year (in what's basically an annual battle of wits between me and Amfox, let's be real here): Gun to my head right now, I'd guess the following: Sam Travis Carlos Asuaje Tzu-Wei Lin Jake Romanski, if healthy, else Jordan Weems (Sox haven't sent a catcher since Vazquez - I feel like they're due) Justin Haley Kyle Martin Williams Jerez Jantzen Witte if he's healthy might also be a consideration.

Martin and Jerez were the two (interesting) names that came to mind. If Henry Ramos is all healed up by then, he's another guy who needs reps and to be evaluated. On the other hand, if you are hoping to avoid having to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, maybe you hold him back and hope other teams forget about him?

I believe Ramos has to play in Puerto Rico, no? Although I guess in theory he could do both. In that case, that would make sense just to get him reps he missed.
I was operating under the assumption he wasn't eligible, but if he is, then yeah, he has to be there.

Gun to my head right now, I'd guess the following: Sam Travis Carlos Asuaje Tzu-Wei Lin Jake Romanski, if healthy, else Jordan Weems (Sox haven't sent a catcher since Vazquez - I feel like they're due) Justin Haley Kyle Martin Williams Jerez Jantzen Witte if he's healthy might also be a consideration. I like most of these picks. Travis, Asuaje and Martin seem like locks. Romanski also, if healthy. Haley is possible, depending on how many innings they want him to complete (he has 85IP now and potentially could max out at 120IP at the end of the year vs. 130IP last year). My guess is that they would send Rosenbaum, though. I could also see Light and Augliera sent as relievers. Jerez would be a lock but his innings have gone from 34 to 71 and counting and I'm not sure they are going to put 100 innings on his arm this year. I'd like to see Aaron Wilkerson with the sub-AA pick but innings could be an issue with him also. So, I won't go with a sub-AA pick and I'll have Mike Miller on my list. So, my initial list is: Travis Asuaje Miller Romanski Rosenbaum Light Augliera Martin

Rosenbaum is an interesting idea. I almost listed Light, but thought about it and I can't remember them sending a Triple-A, non-JAG pitcher before.
Augliera, who has just been moved to the bullpen, does make sense as well. Nice call on that one.
As far as Jerez's innings, he'd have been pitching throughout extended last year as well, so the jump may not be as bad as it seems.

To me, the plan with Light should be to showcase him in the AFL against star players, add him to the 40-man in November and audition him for the major-league bullpen in ST. I could definitely see it not happening, though.
I still think 100+ innings is a lot for a reliever and Jerez may be a guy they don't want to showcase (since he's a borderline add to the 40-man and is Rule 5 eligible).

Would michael kopech be a good idea due to the innings he missed due to the suspension?

No. AFL is AA/AAA league.

Yeah, Kopech will be at Fall Instructs.

Is there any age requirements in that league as well?

What about Margot? Would he be a candidate, also what type of players are usually sent? I haven't really paid attention to the AFL before.

Can not wait to see how Travis does in Arizona! I love his swing, but I am concerned he has no lift and could become a cechini clone, I think this is a valid concern. First, note that Travis is almost 22YO, while Cecchini is 24+YO. Second, if you look at Travis through age 21 and Cecchini through age 22, it would be close, as the extra year from Cecchini would balance out the expected difference between a younger college player versus an older high school draftee. Travis (20YO) - 467 SLG, 151 ISOP (R/A, A) Travis (21YO) - 449 SLG, 138 ISOP (A+, AA) Cecchini (20YO)-500 SLG, 202 ISOP (R/A) Cecchini (21YO)-433 SLG, 128 ISOP (A) Cecchini (22YO)-471 SLG, 149 ISOP (A+, AA) Cecchini's issue is two-fold. First, he demonstrated clearly that he could not play 3B on a regular basis. Second, he has struggled to adjust to triple-A pitching (possibly because he was trying to overcompensate offensively for his position-deficiency). Cecchini (23YO)-371 SLG, 108 ISOP (AAA) Cecchini (24YO)-310 SLG, 91 ISOP (AAA) At this point, it is hard to believe that Cecchini will turn this around to be able to hit sufficiently for 1B/LF. Travis will have to demonstrate that he can make the adjustment to triple-A pitching, after the AFL. Part of this will be added some loft to his swing without declination of his hit tool. It also might be instructive to add Shaw's stats. Shaw has been a year older than Travis at each stop thus far. Shaw doesn't have Travis' hit tool but has more power (although it has fallen precipitously this year). Shaw (21YO) - 445 SLG, 180 ISOP (R/A, A) Shaw (22YO) - 517 SLG, 230 ISOP (A+, AA) Shaw (23YO) - 394 SLG, 173 ISOP (AA) Shaw (24YO) - 473 SLG, 195 ISOP (AA, AAA) Shaw (25YO) - 356 SLG, 107 ISOP (AAA)

What about Margot? Would he be a candidate, also what type of players are usually sent? I haven't really paid attention to the AFL before. Margot is not eligible because he lives in a country that has its own winter league.

Way too confusing to compare Sam Travis to Travis Shaw.

Sam Travis has certainly turned some heads this season. I remember some here were not enthusiastic about him. Can anyone give me an idea of his defense at 1st base? I would think if his "D" is solid we may have a right-handed lite version of Mark Grace. Sign me up for a first baseman who can hit for a solid average, get on base, hit a lot of doubles, and play good defense.
Sure we'd all love a Paul Goldschmidt, but Travis isn't ever going to be that type of player....but he may be pretty valuable in his own way.

Do you all think Margot is a year away for the AFL?

Do you all think Margot is a year away for the AFL? He's from the DR, which has its own winter league(s), so I think that disqualifies him.

Precisely. Otherwise, he'd be an obvious choice, actually.
Henry Ramos and Marco Hernandez are similarly guys who would otherwise be pretty strong candidates.

I lpve TBA Pitcher. You don't hear a lot about him but I bet he turns heads in the AFL.

Ahhhh, Chandler Shepherd makes a lot of sense. Wilkerson too. Can the boy get some dap for 4/6 though? amfox also spot on suggesting Wilkerson who would've been his fourth. (admittedly, was pretty easy this year)
TBA IF - waiting on Witte's health? (EDIT: Actually, Coyle has missed enough time to be a consideration here as well.) TBA P - Light would make sense here. Could be waiting to see if he's just tiring or something? If not, Jerez would as well.

Moncada should be the TBA IF but he probably won't be.
