He needs to be in AA as soon as the weather gets a little warmer. I almost feel as if having them learn the cold weather is a good thing since that's what it's like in Boston but I'm fine with a couple weeks in A ball; more than that is a waste

Didn't the sox leave Travis at Salem for 60 plus games last season?
Any reason to think they would promote benintendi faster this year?

Yeah, as much as I like Travis, and he's a fairly advanced hitter, there's been pretty substantial buzz around baseball that Benintendi is a potential Conforto/Schwarber fast-mover. It's pretty clear he's not only a better baserunner and defensive player than Travis, but a better hitter, too. He just hasn't stopped mashing since they drafted him. Different league in terms of prospect status.

I would like to see a little more over-the-fence from him, but he's pretty obviously on top of just about everything. Salem's not much of a HR park, either. I think once he hits about 150 PA that if he's still raking and his K rate is still well under 10% that he'll move up. I think he makes Boston around mid-August.

One of Benny Baseball's criminally underrated tools is his Bat Flip tool: I'm not scout, but this at least deserves a solid 70! PS: I'm terrible at making gifs

Swing, style kind of remind me of this guy: www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mattido01.shtml?mobile=falseIt's entirely possible (likely?) that his K rates bump significantly in his trip up the ladder, but it'd be amazing if he kept up what he's doing right now. For four years, Mattingly was just flat-out amazing. Another relatively small guy (6', 175) who just crushed the ball through tremendous swing mechanics and consistently barreling up the ball.

I can't make it half way through that streak on the golf course. I didn't make the deadline for the members rankings, but I have Benintendi is my #1 over Espinoza, then Moncada. I'm really happy they took him over Fulmer, but I was strongly against it at the time.

The guy has more triples that strikeouts! It's so crazy good that it makes me laugh! There's also this read.

Correction That's the game where he got ejected for barking at the HP umpire.

Benny even has a 70 PR tool. He sure looks like the total package. I love how he came into the minors and just started to drive the ball and put up consistent, disciplined AB. Hitting for average, pop, OBP, solid defense. My sense is that this is a guy who can handle pressure well and is focused on being the best baseball player he can be. Living through the crucible he went through as a baseball god in Arkansas and staying even keel says a lot about him. This is a fine young man. A good person. His teammates loved him. You could see it in the videos from college. There was joy in his team mates eyes when he won accolades.
When he won the hits championship of Ohio in high school that started a sense of accomplishment in this guy. Sometimes when a person achieves like that, with that kind of "lifetime achievement" type record ( most number of hits from a high school player in Ohio in history if I remember correctly ) it makes them focus even more on the long term. More cognizant and goal oriented. Maybe that has helped shape. Look what happened in college. He came in and was relatively average at first and then absolutely exploded his sophomore year. He met the challenge of college ball and did what was necessary to conquer it.
I'd love to see his hit chart this year. Is he working on taking the ball opposite field more and is that the reason for the fewer HR? It wouldn't surprise me given his numbers so far. It is an obvious need for him as he climbs the ladder and I bet he's on it with passion.

I am so, so glad that the Astros picked Kyle Tucker over Benintendi. That swing and miss streak is insane. Wouldn't be surprised if he got a cup of coffee in September, ala Mondesi for the Royals last year.

quote from Speier's piece today:
In the previous graph Speier mentions Benintendi getting 70 grades on his hit tool, so I'm not sure if this evaluator is talking specifically about that or his overall player grades (I think it's the former but it's sort of unclear).

It's too small a sample size to be conclusive but it does look like he's hitting more to CF and LF than last year. It would seem a trend towards CF especially.

I've never seen him play. Based on his size, does he resemble a LHH Betts? Quick hands? Similar defense?

This is a great thread guys. I read about the 48 swings without a miss streak and was blown away and it led me here. You guys are all over it. Some great info. about a guy who I hope is a mainstay in the Sox outfield for a long time. Pretty exciting to think about what the core of this team will look like in a few years.

I am cautiously encouraged by Benintendi so far. However, Keith Law (who is very high on Benintendi) and a few others have stated that, barring an injury, any first round pick out of a D-1 college program with very few exceptions should start his minor league career in high A as it's about equivalent to high level D1 competition. And with all prospects, I always wait to see how they do against upper level pitching (AA/AAA). Also remember, Comforto aside, the greatest leap a player will face in quality of pitches faced is from AAA to MLB.
Still this is all very nice to see so far.

I don't think I can show the various maps directly but making a visit to Benintendi's page at MLBfarm.com is impressive. The heat maps almost look like that of a switch hitter, particularly on balls hit in the air. mlbfarm.com/player.php?player_id=643217&position=OFthere isn't a single graphic that isn't impressive. Moncada. btw, is now sporting a .456 OBP (and rising). If you have a guy with speed, you dream on a .400 OBP.

Two top prospects, Albies and Swanson, promoted already after crushing their respective leagues for a few weeks. Not crazy to think Benintendi will be next.

It must be nice for Dubon (or whoever) to hit between Moncada Benintendi.
