9 of his 13 total infield popups came in an 8 games, 27 at-bat stretch Jul 20 to Jul 28. People, this sample size is so small it requires a high-powerred microscope to spot. Should we let it all play out a little more?? No, we should continue to believe he will hit 75 popups a year and have a 1.3 bb/k ratio.

Benintendi's K / walk ratio and all the other numbers are so outstanding that he has to be one of the top draft picks we have had in many years. When we factor in the college year he had also what is not to like about him? He's even at least average on defense and how many times can you get a young bat like that who is good on D also? This kid is my new #1 already. Look at how many times we have drafted supposedly the best "college bat" and he ended up being mediocre by the time he reached Lowell, let alone anything above that. We should expect the #7 pick to put up great numbers right from the start, especially if they are a college player. He has hit with a lot of power already, shown a tremendous approach and has almost 2 walks for every strike out? This kid sure looks for real. And from all appearances from the videos and reports I've seen, his coaches and teammates love this young guy. Thank God we landed this guy. He looks like he is toying with pitchers at this level. Like it isn't even a challenge for him. I'd like to see him work a little on taking the ball to the opposite field more but this kid looks like the total package. www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20150821&content_id=144584542&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_milb&sid=milb

I agree that his defense in CF seems to be a pleasant surprise (or at least a nice reflection of pre-draft assessment as a solid-avg to plus defender). I love his approach at the plate, although I think it's very premature to draw any conclusions given that he's really playing kind of below his level. I'm guessing his BB/K rate is going to take a huge hit next year in high-A, to where he probably settles in at 1:1, and maybe 0.8:1 as he climbs the ladder. That said, his approach is clearly as-advertised or better as well. I think the most pleasant development is his power, which seems better-than-expected, particularly with the wood bat adjustment. In fact, that he adapted so well is a great sign. He also appears to have terrific base running skills, and instincts. I'm not sure I'd call him my new #1, (Moncada has been absolutely lethal with the bat and on the base paths after a brief adjustment), but he's rapidly approaching the top spot. Benintendi looks like a true 5-tool guy, with his least impressive tool being a solid-average arm. I also think his hit tool and power were probably underrated pre-draft. Very exciting to see him beat even high expectations.

Beni is a much better hitter than Jackie. I have no doubt that he should put up great numbers in Salem too. He looks ready to play in AA. Maybe he needs some time for seasoning in AA and AAA.

His walk to K ratio is so excellent so far, and his HR rate, that he may be able to maintain a 1/1 walk to K ratio even in the high minors. If he keeps doing damage opposing pitchers are not going to want to throw to him in AA either. To me, what sets him apart is the major pop on top of the plus strike zone management. This kid is a mature hitter who is well schooled. Look how many power hitters have a high strikeout rate. This kid is an aberration. He has not just been an outstanding hitter for the past year. His high school career showed he knew how to hit even back then. His bat speed is excellent and he knows how to hit. This kid is a true baseball rat. I get that he is an advanced hitter who is 21 and should do well in Lowell and Greenville but we have said the same thing in the past about so many other players like Brentz and other top picks who didn't perform in the low minors. This kid is hitting for average, OBP and major pop already. A 35 HR pace over a 650 AB season. This kid is going to get on base well and be a good base runner. Why not hit him #1 or 2? Of course he profiles as a middle of the order bat but it may be he flattens out that swing just a little and becomes the lower pop, higher OBP guy he probably profiles best at long term. By lower pop I mean 20 HR pop. We'll take that any day from an above average defensive outfielder. No one is really comparing him to Kris Bryant as a prospect because Bryant is 6' 5" and obviously much more impressive physically but Beni's walk to strikeout ratio is so much better than Bryant's was at the same point in his minor league career it's not even close, at comparable power rates so far. On top of the off the charts college numbers this past year. This kid has it figured out. He has a system and a plan already, which indicates a major baseball rat. He knows how to play the game. Again, compare his HR rates plus his K/BB ratio with Kris Bryant at the same age and level: www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=bryant001kriBeni looks to be a truly elite prospect. Given his overall history and past year of incredible dominance in college and the minors, he may be the most special prospect we have had in a while.

Benintendi is also not nearly as age advanced as Mookie or Bogaerts were. At the same rate if Benintendi's K rate is really going to be 10% it's easy to see him being a top 10 prospect by the time he's called up.

If we had to pick between keeping one of Benintendi or Margot, and trading the other, if they could be interchangeable in a trade, would you guys prefer keeping Benny, or Margot? Manuel's obviously younger and already in Portland, and has flashed his skills and tools, plays elite defense, etc., but Benny screams 5-tool threat to me. I can easily imagine him batting in the 2nd hole for us in a couple years, or even next September, and slashing .285/.385 with 25-30 homers, with the ability for some steals. Obviously, we have redundancy in the outfield, and it very well may come down to who'll flank Bradley. I think a ton of teams would jump at Margot being their future center fielder, so I'll gladly stick with Benny hitting for average, pop, drawing walks, and playing a corner spot for "reduced" trade value.

We already have two above average CF gloves and Benintendi's bat is better, so I would trade Margot. Margot is closer to the majors and his current value is higher anyways.

College players this day and age are more ready than ever. 6 players from last year's Draft are already in the majors and 4 are major contributors to their teams. The standard 2-5 year waiting period after a player is drafted is an anachronism.

Unless he starts next year in Portland I don't see him coming up before September 16 or the 2017 season.

I think we struck gold with Benintendi. In the a law/Speier podcasts linked in the Dombroski thread Law brought up the fact after the draft scouts from two teams told him he was the best hitter in it and we're trying to keep it a secrete leading up to it. Also it looks like his lack of track record played into our favor. I forgot who the talking head was but they mentioned if he'd have had a good cape summer or another sec year for scouts to judge him he'd have been in consideration for 1-1.

Am I misunderstanding what you mean by this? What other time have the Red Sox picked a guy even in the conversation for the best college bat in a draft? Also, love what Benintendi is doing so far, but let's all remember that the NYPL was probably less difficult for him than the SEC was, and that we're talking about a five-game sample in Greenville. I'm going to wait to really push him in my own rankings until we see what he does in Salem and/or Portland next year.

We have two players who could have a "Mookie" season next year. Both Moncada and Benitendi could rocket through the system like Betts did. I suppose both may start 2016 in Salem, but I wouldn't be surprised if one or both will play in Pawtucket next year. They both have that "it" factor and we are, as an organization, fortunate to have them in the system. Don't be surprised if they are "knocking" at the door soon.
I'm personally hoping they move Moncada to 3rd next year, especially if Devers is traded. I'd like to see Chavis get some time at 2nd. As for Beni, some time in the corner outfield positions may be helpful for him when his time comes. 2017 is pretty ambitious for them in Boston, but I could see it happening.
Those are really the only two position players in the minor league system I wouldn't move (I feel Espinoza is a keeper also). Anyone else in a trade for an ace or a potential ace is on speed dial IMO.

It's pretty naive to think that the best college bat is equal every year. I don't even see the point in comparing them.

No doubt the sample size is small and we have other great prospects but to me Beni is the first major power hitting prospect we have had for a long time. A legitimate 30-35 HR bat potentially. If he makes the majors he will get pitched to differently of course and who knows how he ends up, and I'm sure many here will say Bogaerts was comparable as a middle of the order power bat, but Beni had a terrific power year in college last year plus great pop in the low minors already and he has shown superb pitch selection and an obvious upward swing trajectory. This kid is consciously trying to hit HR and he's pulling it off so far plus just being a productive hitter overall in terms of getting on base. Bogaerts never put up K/walk ratios like these. Beni's K/walk ratio is even better than Bett's was in the low minors, albeit at a higher age but outstanding nonetheless. The Yankees would kill for this guy right now and trade any prospect they have to get him. Left handed power hitter with 30-35 HR potential who gets on base extremely well and plays above average defense.
I know most scouts and analysts would say don't scout the box score, especially in the low minors and with age appropriate players, but this kid has put up legitimate top prospect numbers for the entire past year ( in college and the minors ), on top of a terrific high school career. He doesn't appear to be phased by the pressure of being "the guy" in the lineup. He is consistently hitting for power even in the low minors and we haven't had that in our system nearly enough. Developing real power bats who are not Middlebrooks type low OBP guys has been a problem. And we aren't sacrificing defense to get it with Benintendi. We don't usually get the chance to land players like Benintendi and Moncada. We have to luck out ( kind of ) and draft guys like Betts who get overlooked elsewhere and roll the dice. Beni is a blue chip, bonifide slab of premium prospect granite, quickly being carved into a baseball "David".
There is a chance he is a real difference maker. I know it's way early to get too excited but it's just great to see that there is a chance we have acquired that sort of player in Beni.
