Porcello looks like a different pitcher tonight.

Well, well, where has THIS Rick Porcello been all year? Can we credit DDo for his performance tonight?

Shaw cleans out an inside FB at 97 MPH. Is this guy for real now? I haven't seen any games for a long time except for the last couple games.

I swear I see more and more Rizzo in Shaw.

Unless he hits 15 home runs in the next 35 games, I don't think I can be convinced he should be anything besides a bench player going into next season. And Jimed - that was eerily like Rizzo. Bit of a circular motion with his back arm and absolutely cleaned out the inner part of the plate.

For him even to be on the roster next year would be a huge plus for him. I'm glad he is making things happen!

I am so freaking excited for the rest of this season and the offseason and next season. Love these kids.
And if Porcello can return to his previous form, that deal looks pretty solid again.

Fun game to watch.
Why is it I don't feel confident about the Sox winning?
Why is it I don't really care if they win?
I agree with ianrs.

Shaw need to be our 1B till a more permanent one can be found. Maybe he can settled in. Just no HanRam.

Impossible to overstate how encouraging this start was for Porcello. Also good to see Tazawa with a smooth inning - that hit was garbage and should have been an out. Poor read by Shaw (deceptively difficult one, but poor nonetheless) and Taz didn't do himself any favors by not covering either.
Shaw's blast was impressive.

The post ASB wins (and near wins with slow hooks) all feel so good, but also feels like pre-2004 with an acceptance that things will go wrong (as in near wins with slow hooks).
However, recent work by Porcello, Kelly, Miley, Owens, Wright; the awesome kids plus Papi, Pedey, Hanigan, Holt all make me think (believe?) this team is in good shape aleady for 2016. Not as much to do as expected pre-ASB

There have been too many "is this sarcastic" comments on the forum in the last month but... is this sarcastic? Do you think that if a contender wanted Breslow in exchange for a pack of gum they wouldn't have traded for him already? Do you think he hasn't cleared waivers and isn't already eligible to be traded? Do you think he is good enough to be on any playoff team's roster? As one of the few on this board who actually thought bringing back Breslow was a sensible idea (I thought his '14 struggles were related to him being worked pretty hard down the stretch in '13), even I have to admit he's one of the worst pitchers in the majors at this point. Any team who wants him can have him right now for the old PTBNL/cash with a simple phone call. I've been thinking about the whole Breslow thing recently. He's managed to keep his performance just above or at the line where you'd release him -- he has 0.2 bWAR. If he's a great clubhouse presence, a mentor to younger pitchers, that would go a long way to explaining how he's kept his job all year. (The other explanations, of course, involve the usual film-noir cliches.) Fair points. Still, he has a pretty bad -1.009 WPA, which is actually falsely inflated some since it was +.334 after his first five appearances - the two scoreless innings in the 19-inning win in Yankee Stadium were pretty clutch.

My own take, as always. The real regret is that the team couldn't have brought the younger players up sooner. That's not possible in this environment, it's just not. I think they would have been at least as competitive.
Anyway, it wouldn't have done much good till the pitching got straightened out, and that took a few of those kids also. The team looks much better now.

travis shaw and JBJ have simply changed my mind. they have major league bat speed . off lefties, off righties, they can flat out hit heaters. Which is incredibly encouraging if they're going to be batting 7 through 9

These kids just don't get it. Is that 4 series wins interrupted by a series split; five strong series in a row? The Sox will never get that top-10 pick at this rate ... but they are certainly evolving into a serious 2016 contender, and can anticipate a stud FA and trade or two to enhance their odds. What a difference from.a momth ago.

One of the knocks against Shaw as that he couldn't hit the high inside fastball. Shaw is one of those players who works on his weaknesses and improves. Often a player gets labeled and the label sticks even when it no longer is valid. This seems to happen more often to players who were not taken high in the draft.

Shaw's raw power has always been called above average. How is it not at least plus raw? He's a big bodied guy and is 6'4. His bat speed is solid. He has absolutely crushed 4 of his home runs too. Tough to convince me he doesn't have 60+ raw, even if he doesn't get to it often. Guy hits some serious shots, and I didn't really expect it given the reports we always got on him.
