And Ramses Rosario comes on in the 2nd. Neither very good. Seems the DSL Sox didn't go with their best today. Calvo going on 5 days rest, though. Could have gone Victor Garcia/Ryan Oduber, though.

You of all people would be the other one to remember (or maybe VermontSox and Singer), but am I remembering right that they skipped Garcia's last start before his final regular season one? Wonder if that has something to do with it. Because with Reyes having to pitch Saturday, Garcia seemed a pretty obvious Game 1 starter.

You may be right, Chris. I was thinking it was the start before that, though.

Meanwhile, Espinoza pitches around a leadoff single by getting a couple K's, then getting a groundout after a balk and a HBP in the first.
Also, Yomar Valentin getting what I think is his first action at 3B. Carlos Tovar needs ABs and reps after missing an extended period with what I'm guessing was an injury (he was sent to the DSL and never played before being added back, so we're thinking that was a paper move), so my guess is this is more of a way to get them both on the field than a potential positional move for Valentin.

Yeah, I think his second-to-last start was skipped, but then he pitched again last Tuesday. Not sure what the deal is with him, but he should be rested.

You may be right, Chris. I was thinking it was the start before that, though. Possible. Point stands either way. Just checked. According to MiLB box scores anyway, Garcia pitched 4 innings on Tuesday, 8/18. Oduber also followed with 3 innings (and got win). Still might be a lingering injury. If so, Oduber has been great, too. I think he'd have been a good choice. Are they allowed to bring guys over from DSL1 at this point? Can Christopher Acosta be transferred for the playoffs? I know they can during the season, but something about doing so for the playoffs seems like it would against the rules.

RE: transfers from DSL1, I'd wondered if they'd do that. Can't see why they can't do that, and there'd be reason to with Acosta having missed time due to injury. That said, there could also be an element of letting the guys who got to the playoffs be the ones to play too. I'm sure it might breed resentment if a bunch of DSL1 guys got to ride the coattails of the DSL2 guys into the playoffs (not that this would be the point).

Espinoza inning 2: IF single, fielder's choice (couldn't turn 2), K looking, groundout.
Worth noting that Espinoza has one more start on regular rest for the GCL in the regular season, as the season ends Saturday. Do you start him on regular rest or let him sit to pitch game 1 of the playoffs? Even if we assume that Josh Pennington has been shut down (last pitched 8/4), they could just let Jalen Williams start because Allen's going deep enough that he doesn't necessarily need a piggyback starter behind him. Rotation for the rest of the week would be Raudes/Allen/Williams/De Jesus/Bautista. Espinoza would get the one-game semifinal, rotation for the potential best-of-three final would be Raudes/Allen/De Jesus, with Bautista and Williams available out of the bullpen.

I was thinking about that very question this morning while updating the pitching probables. If I were making the decision, I'd hold him back and pitch him in game 1.

So, a full year, about 18 starts, and not a single win as a starter. We really need to reevaluate our international spending.

Still holding out hope he gets a September callup. E.E. .... seems like a no-brainer that he's in BOS very soon. So they can decide whether to carry him on the roster over the winter.
on another note: DSL Sox playoff series in best of 3.

I don't understand the practice of denying Espinoza any chance to win games. I know they probably are limiting his innings, but this seems very odd to me. Anyone have an explanation?

Last 4 starts for AE:
16 7 1 0 1 23, 0 HR, 2 HB. 0.89 FIP. 25 GB, 4 LD, and 3 Outfield FB, plus 1 bunt (78.1% GB).
He had a 3.03 FIP in his first 6 starts, but a 67.6% GB%. His overall GB% is precisely 71.0%, and his FIP is 2.18.

You're seriously concerned about his wins in the Gulf Coast League? Rookie ball? Why? They're managing his innings and working on his development. What else do you want?
