I know hindsight is 20/20 but it sure does look like the Red Sox mishandled the situation with Rusney Castillo this season. Yes, he was hurt during spring training which led to him starting the season in the minors, but It sure looks like he should have been brought up as soon as he kicked the rust off. I think that the quick ascension through the minors last year showed that whatever adjustments he needed to make we're at the MLB level, there is no way to know how it would have played out if he had been promoted in May, but I think it's pretty likely the production would have been better than the Sox got out of the RF position this year, especially if you remove Holt's at bats from the equation. Anyway, it's really encouraging to see what Castillo is doing now, too bad it wasn't a full season.

He can mash, but what a train wreck of a base runner. Lots of stupid mistakes.

I agree, while he is still a bit rough around the edges (forgetting how many outs there are etc...) he looks like an extremely talented player who I am pretty excited to see over a full year next year, assuming we don't trade him.

Possibly those mistakes weren't costly at the level of ball played in Cuba and he will learn that that style doesn't play in the big leagues.

It helps when Farrell isn't managing the team so he actually gets playing time.

Wonder if lack of English hinders the base running? He's defiantly a good hitter. Can't Waite for next year in so many ways. He's is one of them.

He's up a notch or two from the Cuban league. Better ballplayers so he can't always take the chances he used to and get away with it. He'll learn the ML and be fine. Did you read something different into it?

One component of base running is the ability to make a nearly split-second assessment of what the guy on the other team with or chasing the ball is going to be able to do with it. This is part of the reason rookies like Mookie Betts get more slack for base running mistakes than the veterans. It takes a little while to "calibrate" a decision-making process that has to be performed so rapidly as to be almost instinctual.

I wish we could put Hanley on the 60-day DL and allow them both, along with Mookie, to play everyday.

It will be easier to ship Hanley away if he proves he can rake to ode out the year, and we can cry injury to other teams. It sucks but there's no way to get JBJ, Mookie, Castillo, and Shaw to play every day with Hanley on the roster.

It's not like we want to go into 2016 with just three outfielders either though, right? I mean, are we really concerned with having too many OF again? We had that worry this year and it didn't turn out well at all. Keeping Hanley plus 3 CF isn't really such a bad outcome. They ought to have Mookie play some 2B again in ST so he can be an option there if we get another extended Pedie injury.

Last night during the radio broadcast they talked about Castillo's adjustment to MLB compared to Cuban ball. He told them that in Cuba the batter always swings when the runner tries to steal and that it has taken him some time to not do that instinctively now. There probably are other instinctive things that he learned in Cuba that have to be straightened out. But not his hitting. He's not having a problem there.

Castillo's career MLB numbers are outstanding. .311/.351/.468 slash line over 203 PA. That kind of production sustained, plus the CF-caliber defensive range and a hose that plays in right... that is a fringe All Star.
On the other hand, his career peripherals are a bit bizarre. 20% HR/FB and a .359 BABIP. Extremely high ground ball rate at 67.5%.
The BABIP can at least be partially attributed to his GB%. But what about the power? Is he really this good, or are we going to see a fierce regression to his baseline in terms of both power and average?

He's a -1.4 win player this year. I don't want that as a fourth outfielder or on my team period. He can't play LF

I imagine it would come out of your paycheck if you toss a ball into the stands. But hey he's making big money now. He can afford it.

But what about the power? Is he really this good, or are we going to see a fierce regression to his baseline in terms of both power and average? Among MLB players with 200 or more PA 2014-5, that 20.0% HR/FB is tied for 18th out of 451 players. The thing is, though HR/FB is not the best measure of pure power -- to get that, you need to subtract popups from the denominator. Rusney has yet to hit a popup (for an out) in MLB. Really. So he's actually tied for 27th in HR/OF-FB, which is still impressive. Ortiz is 32nd with 19.6%. I have no doubt that his HR/OF-FB is more or less for real. It might be actually 18.5% or so, which would put him about 45th with Pujols, Rizzo, and Adam Jones. He seems to have their kind of power (Jones in particular seems like a good comp); I mean, the guy is ripped. And Rusney's HR's have averaged 395', Standard Distance, whereas Adam Jones' this year have averaged 397'. That doesn't prove anything, but it doesn't contradict the impression. The lack of popups may be a correlate of the huge ground ball rate. If they could find a minor adjustment (probably initial hands position) that would change his swing path upwards a bit, he'd start popping up occasionally, which would reduce the HR/FB a bit, but that would be more than offset by more FBs, period. Oh, and his ml numbers are underwhelming (110 wRC+ in 172 PA in AAA). Those need to be included. But he's demonstrated that he's good enough to start in RF next year.

He'll learn the ML and be fine. Did you read something different into it? I was more curious what you may or may not have heard about Rusney's experiences in the Cuban leagues. From what I've read, the pitching in particular is extremely inconsistent. The problem will probably solve itself though, since renewed relations will probably mean that any player in Cuba who's worth a damn won't be playing there for long.
