Last season in the booth due to poor ratings.
@dandcshow: This will be Don Orsillo's final season on the Red Sox broadcast according to multiple sources.

Don Orsillo is not the reason for low ratings. But at least NESN is taking Chris Carter's advice - they have their "fall guy."

Well that sucks. Orsillo is one of the better play-by-play guys working today. Obviously the Don and Jerry Show gets on everyone's nerves but in terms of his actual job he's excellent.

Very odd too because people are pretty upset on social media and I feel like he really is adored by the casual fans.
I could see ESPN scooping him up for play by play.

This seems silly. I'm hoping that it's something like he got a national gig and that Don and NESN couldn't work out a feasible part-time strategy. Because if they're straight-out letting him go they are dumdums. Orsillo is popular and good.

Makes you wonder what's going on behind the scenes. Also makes me extremely worried about the future of Red Sox broadcasts. I mean, what if Orsillo was the guy keeping them from being all nonsense, all the time?

I have a hard time believing this is due to ratings. Nobody could be that dumb to blame this train wreck not being watchable on the announcer, laughable. But if Orsillo is gone for whatever reason I hope they give the job to Dave O'Brien, he's outstanding.

It is possible he would have been a lot better without Jerry Remy. Constantly Don has had to fill in with mundane stuff or just repeat the count endlessly because Remy sometimes goes "silent". Even their humorous moments often take away from who's batting or what is happening on the field. Some of that is great, but I always felt that without it, Remy would be adding less to a conversation. I'm not a big fan of Orsillo, but I think a major problem was a few feet away from him.

Would rather they simply add Eck as a permanent fixture, they work well together and Eck is pure gold.

Don Orsillo is not the reason for low ratings. But at least NESN is taking Chris Carter's advice - they have their "fall guy." Can't fire the players as the saying goes, already fired the GM, and can't fire the manager at the moment, so...fire the play-by-play guy?

I like listening to them....It's part of the overall 'ambience' if you will. Sure I would like to hear more in-depth analysis but I think Remy in particular is doing more of that. Neither can be critical of the team or the players and retain the job but I like their relatively objective reporting while you are still aware that they pull for the Sox.

No confirmation I hope they put Speier in the booth in some fashion.

Douchebag move here. No sane person would blame the ratings on the announcer. A better team would take care of those ills. There has to be more to the story.

Bring back Sean McDonough. Orsillo was too bland and failed to evolve with the sport.

He has an affable, friendly persona and seems to have a genuine enthusiasm for the game, whereas Buck is a joyless curmudgeon who literally cannot enjoy any part of baseball now that Jeter is retired.

Orsillo is being replaced, not "laid off." I have thought that Orsillo and Remy spend WAY too much time talking about silly stuff instead of the game. I am sure that a minority of the viewers do not mind endless rambling about parking spaces, hair, restaurants and clothing choices, but it is frustrating and boring to those who would like more focus on the game. There have been countless times when something interesting has happened on the field that Don and Jerry treat as a distraction as they giggle their way through a discussion of mildly amusing personal adventures. Jerry is a disaster. Don failed to keep a sharp focus on baseball. Don is a very good play-by-play announcer, but only when Jerry is not in the booth.

When Orsillo does playoffs games on National networks he is much better, so I do blame Remy, I've been sick of Remy for a long time, it better be both of them gone. I'll second (or third) Dave O'Brien as the replacement. And continue the Alex Speier sentiment. Those two would make a great duo. While I'm sad for Orsillo because I know he loved this job, he won't have any problems at all finding work. Maybe he'll replace that dumbass Joe Buck on FOX.

Orsillo was awesome when Remy was out battling cancer. He adapted to having to work with a rotation of color guys and did it very well.

So much of that Don and Jerry talk about hair stuff was calculated and forced. And I'm worried we'll be getting even more of it in the future.
