Really sad for me, being 19 Orsillo was the voice of the Red Sox for me, and really the only one I've known. I always thought he did an excellent job and am sure he will find success elsewhere, but I do think it is a mistake by NESN to let him go. Even though O'Brien is great, there is value to a bond fans have developed with Orsillo.
The broadcast as a whole could use work, but his skill as a play-by-play guy was certainly not the issue.

I've come around to Chris' take, that these are the production values NESN wants. Not sure why that wasn't the issue instead of Orsillo.

Dave O'Brien is one of the best and an upgrade - I listen to more games than I get to watch and I'm going to miss him. I didn't dislike Orsillo, but the Jerry and Don show was wearing a little thin for me.

Per Globe, NESN moved the pregame show from Yawkey Way to inside the stadium to avoid the crowd, and Fenway officials are confiscating any pro-Orsillo signs as people walk in. This is incredibly embarrassing, and really reflects poorly on the organization top to bottom. Sounds like Larry wasn't the only owner who can lead a hatchet job. Sounds like Tom Werner is working out of the Roger Goodell book of PR.

Thanks for the update. I will thus retract my rant.

How much autonomy does NESN have from the Red Sox anyway?

How much autonomy does NESN have from the Red Sox anyway? Very little. (As in they generally don't report negative stories; same thing goes with the Bruins.)

Considering that NESN, the Globe and the Red Sox are all essentially the same organization I don't think the Globe retracting a story that makes NESN look bad is particularly surprising. Not saying the story is true or not, but even if it was true I'm pretty sure the Globe would be under orders to retract it.

Yeah, and that sort of editorial control doesn't show up by retracting one sentence and leaving the rest of the very negative article (not to mention the half-dozen other articles slamming the decision).

Fair enough, honestly didn't read the article (or any others from the Globe on this), made assumptions based on the ownership.

I guess what I was implying is "was this a NESN decision that the Red Sox allowed or was this a Red Sox decision?" NESN is basically a PR outlet for the Red Sox or Bruins. They don't run stories that will show the Sox in a negative light, and if anything is borderline, they'll run it by ownership beforehand. The Globe is still a separate, independent entity for the most part, but my hunch is that it'll gradually change over time (kind of like ESPN with the NFL, though obviously not an apples-to-apples comparison).

San Diego? Nice move for both. Don will have to get a new boat. Never seen a paddle boat in the Bay. Lots and lots of kayaks, sailboats, sportsfishing on a huge protected bay. He will love the weather. San Diego is called the air-conditioned city, 75 degrees with no humidity to wreck his Aboud suits. Petco is right up the street from the restaurants of the Gaslamp District, Little Italy, the docks. There are condos surrounding the park. The natives will love him too. Yayy Don. I will watch the games and make the Padres my west coast NL team. Sorry Magic.

Gaslight District might be fun, but Orsillo, with small children and, as I understand recently divorced, will have other things on his mind.

Read a rumor on another board (no idea if it's even in the realm of possibility) that Orsillo could be offered the WEEI job with Joe C. That would be something It was reported in the Herald, and he'd have been getting 1/3 of his NESN salary while also doing a ton of offseason work doing appearances and stuff. Needless to say, he didn't take it.
