Allen cruising early. Through three, Red Sox getting no-hit, lead 1-0. #rookieball (walk, groundout, balk, groundout)
Continuing our discussion of the GCL South that sorta started yesterday, look at the batting averages of the GCL Orioles lineup in the box score. Moesquit, the only one with good numbers, is 20 and was apparently demoted from the NYPL. He was also the only one who hit the ball in the air off Espinoza two days ago. Otherwise, that lineup is a bucket of yuck.

I think your general point stands, though.

Didn't Eric point out the actual EqA (or TVA, I forget which he used) of opponents for each of the starters? This is an empirical question and pretty easily testable.

You got to love those 3 kid pitchers we have in Fort Myers (Espinoza, Raudes, and Logan Allen). The combined runs they have given up is simply amazing!
GCL Stats Only: Espinoza 40 innings, 24 hits, 3 earned runs, 40 K, 9 walks
Raudes 20 innings, 13 hits, 2 earned runs, 16 K, 6 walks
Allen 20 innings, 12 hits, 2 earned runs, 24 K, 1 walk

On the flip side....you don't know if those batting averages are yuck because the hitters are yuck....or if its because they only play in a division with 3 other teams and those teams have great pitching (potentially our guys). I think the best analysis we could put forward is to examine how our pitchers have fared relative to pitchers on the other 3 teams.

It might be overzealous positive thinking, and I know us Sox fans aren't typically predisposed to it, but maybe our three kids are just that good. Allen certainly seems to be getting more attention these days along with Espy.

On a slightly-related note... given the money some of these guys get, and the money going around baseball general, how is it sensible to have basically a four-team league? I mean I get that Florida is a big place and that buses are expensive, but wouldn't it be better to evaluate these players if MLB kicked in a little gas expense. Paying $3 million for a 16-year-old but having trouble evaluating how good he is - or more importantly, what he needs to work on or what his specific weaknesses are - because he maybe only pitched against two teams? That's insane.

playing in 95F and 90% humidity is good for building up the kids endurance just air condition the area for seating, so when I am comfortable when I get the chance to come down, I am too old to endure heat+humidity

Greenville announcer on a spectacular moncada->lorenaza 4-5-3 double play: "... Holy COW. You will not see it any prettier than that."

Lost in all this offense is how great Drehoff was tonight. 6 strong scoreless innings before he gave way to Fernandez.

@redsoxstats: Yoan Moncada just hit his 8th home run of the year, apparently out of the stadium and into an apartment beyond left center field.
Can't wait for this kid.

After 1/2, HR, 2 BB, SO, Josh Ockimey's hitting rates, and where they would rank among 155 MLB qualifiers, just to give a sense of how insane they are:
SO%: .361, 1st (Chris Carter leads with .336) BB%: .122, 10th HR/Contact: .043, tied for 65th (but see below) BABIP: .420, 1st (Paul Goldschmidt leads with .389) XBH% (XBH / Hits in Play): .324, 17th
And now we'll normalize it based on NYPL rates versus MLB:
SO%: .369, 1st BB%: .105, 20th HR/Contact: .114, 2nd to Chris Davis BABIP: .413, 1st XBH% (XBH / Hits in Play): .624, 1st (Jose Bautista leads with .452).
This is a guy going deep in counts and swinging really, really, really, really hard.

This is a guy going deep in counts and swinging really, really, really, really hard. Had the pleasure of watching Josh in person. Features a deep, low crouch with his hands far back away from the plate, almost touching the catcher. Reminded me Mo Vaughn. Big, burly kid that generates plenty of pop upon contact but appeared to struggle with secondary stuff.

His ability to get that much power out of such a short, simple swing is impressive as hell.

Not only great plays, but the Harry Caray impersonator made it even more entertaining.

His ability to get that much power out of such a short, simple swing is impressive as hell. Yeah that wasn't even a high effort swing and it got out of the entire stadium in like 2 seconds. His power from the right side is scary.
