Some of the Ground Rules are applied loosely in here, as we understand that there is a tendency to want to react (or overreact) to every play of a Sox game with one line reactionary posts. I can only imagine if this club had the corpse of CC Sabathia under contract, what people would be saying.

We almost need to sweep the MFY in order to have a chance at a .500 record and to possibley keep them from the playoffs. Why not. Let's go SOX

Since July 31 the Sox are 29-22. That winning percentage applied to a whole season would yield a 92-70 record.
Through July 31 the Sox had scored 432 runs, an average of 4.1 per game. Since July 31 they have scored 288 runs, an average of 5.6 per game.
Through July 31 the Sox had allowed 500 runs, an average of 4.8 per game. Since July 31 they have allowed 225 runs, an average of 4.4 per game.
They have reduced their negative run differential to -5.

The offensive improvements are due to an inspired Ortiz, healthy Pedey and the kids; the core going forward. Improved defensive numbers also come from the kids, who have found their bats AND provided outstanding run prevention. The core going forward.
For 2016, we can be certain that pitching will improve, which raises the question whether the returns of Hanley and/or Panda will enhance or diminish thoae 2nd half numbers

I think Porcello is a major bounce back candidate, if only because his home run rate is almost certainly going to normalize back to his career average, his GB rate the same, and he's been spectacular since his return. Don't get me wrong, at $20M, it still will take a big bounce back, but I don't think he's just going to completely become nearly useless like Sabathia has been, with anther $25M due in 2016, and barring a "left shoulder injury", will be guaranteed $25M in 2017

I hate these guys. Win all of them and imperil their post-season chances.

You know, I'm quite willing to give Porcello a pass for this year. He was the victim of obscenely bad defense early in the season. The time he was given to straighten his head arm out seems to have worked wonders. I think that's the guy we see moving forward. I hate these guys. Win all of them and imperil their post-season chances. ...and then the tour of the Bronx for Moncada? There should be a suplussed pope-mobile somewhere around town.

Porcello has pitched poorly. That can potentially be fixed if the talent is there. Remember, he's still just 26. Heck, he's younger than Joe Kelly, who everyone treats like he's still a rookie, practically.
Sabathia's body, particularly his knee, is breaking down on him in a manner that suggests he's toast and, as mredsox89 says above, he is under contract for another 2/50 as long as his left shoulder holds up, and his knee is bad enough that he probably won't even be able to throw enough for that to happen.
Put it this way, would you rather Sabathia at 2/50 or Porcello at 4/82.5?
(Edit: by the way, did we ever figure out what happens if a player retires? Does he still count against the CBT? I remember looking and not being able to figure that out.)

You at least have to go through the motions right?

I don't understand how Allen Craig is still here. It's hope against hope at this point. Has anyone heard a plausible explanation why he never elected surgery?

Personally, I think he'll develop into even more. If Vazquez catches and Hanley is a competent 1B, Porcello could easily be the biggest benefactor

Mookie Betts just became the second Red Sox ever with at least 15 HR, 40 2B, 8 3B, 20 SB in a season. The other, Nomar in 1997.

Mookie has had a GREAT year. He and Xander have made every game this season watchable for me. Played Mookie in an AAU tournament when we were both 16, never thought that the leadoff hitter named Mookie from Nashville would become one of my favorite players.

The other, Nomar in 1997. 63XBH, 20SB, absurd OF defense, heads up baserunning with speed, great makeup, as a 22yr old rookie. Seems we can expect a wondeeful career. And those dozen kids like each other, play well together, so no separate cabs. Goosebumps.

I just saw this on WEEI:
By Rob Bradford
NEW YORK — Hanley Ramirez‘ offseason has begun early.
The Red Sox first baseman has returned to his Miami-area home, leaving the Red Sox for the remainder of the regular season. It had already been announced last week that Ramirez was being shut down due to continued soreness in his right shoulder.
I don't understand why some players injured stay with the team and others don't. Am I missing something? Shouldn't Hanley finish the season with his teammates?
