Well so far my first move on the GM thread is done. I traded Owens and Marrero though.
Sign some Greinke

I feel bad for the front office guys. I bet a lot of them are rethinking their decision to stay.

I hate to say I told you so, but . . .
No actually I REALLY hate saying I told you so in this particular instance.
The "fun" will be watching Theo Epstein, finally freed from the meddling of an egotistical owner who thinks he is a genius because he made a fortune manipulating currencies at the expense of so many others but never actually MADE anything in his life, patiently build a team that competes year after year after year.
It's finally time we all recognize the job Larry Lucchino did in keeping this moron in check for so many years.

Counterpoint: The Sox would like to make the playoffs and have a good shot at winning a WS in the next 3 years, and they're willing to sacrifice potential in years 4-5-6-7 for that.
It's a likely overpay, no disagreement there. But no clue as to what the value of Guerra truly was. One year of affiliated ball albeit at only 19, a defense first guy, etc.
This deal makes it significantly more likely the team makes the playoffs in many of the next 3 years, and I still believe they have a #1 starter on the way, who likely will have his biggest value in the next three years. They're not punting things past 3 years, but taking the chance now, then see what they need after that when Moncada, Espinoza, Devers, and Benintendi could all be ready

Tells me that DD has a bead on getting his starting pitcher in the FA market. Say goodbye to the #12 draft pick. Agreed on the first part, but Price and Cueto are possible enough to not say goodbye yet. Understood, but you also understand that DD does not care about the draft. It is more likely, statistically, to be one of the QOs (of which there are eight) than either Price or Cueto.

What's next? Mookie for Tyson Ross? Anything is possible with this troglodyte

Ian, chill dude. I have always known that DD would trade young kids in the minors without a thought. He did that in Detroit so it won't be different. But let's look at this like this, over simplified. They just traded a AA outfielder who's a very good but not great prospect, a LOw A short stop who's a B prospect, a Low A starter who's a B-/C prospect and we really aren't worried about Asuaje are we? They got a controllable reliever who's arguably the top closer in the game and has been. Kimbrel may have slipped slightly from his first couple years that were all tile great years but he's still phenomenal. I definitely think Kimbrel is very good, and will absolutely help this team. We really needed relief help. And of course as others have mentioned, a big SP will probably come from FA (my guess is Price or Cueto, and keep the draft pick). Maybe this was just the right way to go given the trade market for SP. And you're right - I was probably in denial about Dombrowski trading a lot of the system. I realize I am probably overvaluing the Red Sox prospects. But I did really like Margot and Guerra, because of their defense and age-advancement. To me it seems like this is an overpay from a position of depth type of move. Which is fine. And maybe Dombrowski is just a master at this kind of thing - maybe Margot ends up as the next Maybin. It just seems like too much to me. As Eric said, if either Margot or Guerra has an average career, we lose. And it could be that they end up much more than that. I suppose that is the risk you take...

There spending money for an ace. Margot was the only chip out of those top ones I could live with. Logan Allen hurts but we held onto Kopech. Margot but we held onto Benitendi. Guerra I always thought was gonna go . Padres made a good move. A few teams were in on him. I am more disappointed in Ben for putting together that pathetic bullpen last year. I mean DD had to get something.

You guys are overreacting. Once again we are way overrating our own prospects. Neither had a future hear with Xander at short and The surplus of outfieldeers with talent makes Margot very expendable. If you want talent, you have to spend talent, and Kansas City proves a dominant bullpen wins championships. It hurts, but we'll live with it. both years away from the majors and i want to win NOW.

I happen to think we're selling high on all of these guys (with maybe the exception of Allen who I don't know much about). And it's still a horrible deal.

I've lost all my taste for chasing a young SP...just sign Price, Cueto, or Greinke and leave the rest of the farm alone.

Kimbrel's contract is pretty much equal to Miller's remaining contract - they could have just signed him

Even if that is true -- and there is no real reason to think it is -- Getting this little return on those players is NOT the way to compete with well-run teams. All aboard the mediocrity express!!!

The point is that if you stockpile positional redundancy, you trade it for a starter, NOT a relief pitcher.

At least we're better in 2016. I really think they could have gotten much more value from Margot and Guerra, and it seems to put the Sox in a potentially bad position negotiating a trade for a starter, but no sense in dwelling on the negatives. After this move, gotta hope there is something for a starter on the horizon, preferably Price because I'd rather not take too much more from the prospect depth, as well as maybe signing another good reliever.

Well, in fairness, Dombrowski said this was going to hurt. It's not like he didn't warn us. This is what he does, he guts farm systems.
This team has decided to go in a starkly different direction. I think they're wrong, but we'll see. In the mean time, not getting attached to any of the young players. I can see DD trading any of them what whatever shiny vet. Ugh.

Wonder how Hazen feels / what his communication with DD was like on this deal. I'm guessing it mostly involved making sure DD coffee stayed filled while he was on the phone with Preller.
