Shaw and Travis platoon at 1B with Hanley moving to full-time DH? No, we trade for Freeman and dump Sandoval. Ramirez platoons 3B with Shaw, who takes over there full-time in 2017.

The craziest part of all this to me is that "Sportsglory.com" had it first.

I'm happy for Papi if true. Don't want to see him hitting .220 while sticking around a year too long and not being a force hitting 3rd/4th. Go out on top Papi!

Most likely Hanley slides over to DH and Sam Travis winds up at 1b. For all we know Travis Shaw might wind up at 3b if Sandoval keeps going the wrong way.
As for Papi, I will miss him something fierce. I remember what the Sox were prior to his arrival and what they became afterwards. He impacted this franchise as much as any player ever has.
I hope he can go out with one more championship. He'd match Harry Hooper (and there was another player who had a cameo - Heinie Wagner?) with 4 Championships as a Red Sox. That would be four more than I imagined in my lifetime. Thanks Big Papi for all the great memories!

I never quite bought the "no tour for me!" part ... I mean, maybe his preference was no tour, but this is Big Papi here. He's not one to shy away from the spotlight, so I don't think it took all that much convincing.
Probably the right time. He's still really good, and he's also very proud and would have a hard time sucking.

I don't know, Hanley is perfect for DH. He's a great bat when healthy and DHing should keep him that way. Beyond that, Ortiz is kind of he last of the Mohegans when it comes to DHing. Without the steroids rampant in the game, the guys we came to expect as a DH aren't around anymore. That's why when you look at who the other teams DHs are they aren't all that impressive. I'm not so sure about that as this is the players who qualified for the batting title as a DH: I see five with a 1.9 WAR from there bat alone and I'm sure there were platoons used to with good production Sortable Batting RK PLAYER TEAM AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO AVG OBP SLG OPS WAR 1 Prince Fielder TEX 613 78 187 28 0 23 98 0 0 64 88 .305 .378 .463 .841 1.9 2 Kendrys Morales KC 569 81 165 41 2 22 106 0 0 58 103 .290 .362 .485 .847 2.4 3 Edwin Encarnacion TOR 528 94 146 31 0 39 111 3 2 77 98 .277 .372 .557 .929 4.7 4 David Ortiz BOS 528 73 144 37 0 37 108 0 1 77 95 .273 .360 .553 .913 3.2 5 Billy Butler OAK 538 63 135 28 1 15 65 0 0 52 101 .251 .323 .390 .713 -0.9 6 Alex Rodriguez NYY 523 83 131 22 1 33 86 4 0 84 145 .250 .356 .486 .842 3.0 7 Evan Gattis HOU 566 66 139 20 11 27 88 0 1 30 119 .246 .285 .463 .748 0.5

DD better be proactive finding a power bat. Once Ortiz is gone there will be severe lack of power in the lineup. With the FA market week the next few years, he needs to be looking to upgrade the power. Given his track record we can't count on Hanley this year, so don't tell me two years from now we can. DD"s track record is all about power arms and power bats, he'll find one. It will be tough, he has no trade chips.

If only Hanley would retire, I'd take my chances with Papi taking his years.

DD"s track record is all about power arms and power bats, he'll find one. I don't necessarily believe that the Sox will have a severe lack of power. By 2017, I would hope Bogaerts would graduate to the level of being a 20 - 30 home run guy. Travis Shaw could have a lineup spot and could be hitting 20 plus HRs. JBJ and Mookie Betts could be good for 35 homers combined between the two of them. Swihart could be a 15 HR/year guy. Hanley as a DH should stay healthy enough to hit 20 plus homers/year. Sam Travis could also become a 15 HR/year guy as well. They'll have Moncada and Benintendi knocking on the door. Both have the power to exceed 20 homers/year in the bigs. Devers could be a 25 HR/year guy once he gets established. None of these guys are major threats to win home run titles, but the Sox have enough power up and down the lineup to be a consistent power threat in the coming years.

Sorry to see Papi go, if reports are true. His HoF chances are also diminished by the fact that half the voters are from the non-DH National League.

Looks good to this observer, Travis and Shaw to share first base in 2017. And, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the plan.
Let's just hope Hanley can play a decent 1B and stays relatively healthy in 2016.

"Doesn't want a tour." ------------------------- I don't think he'd mind one. I hope he has an uneventful winter, does his prep work, readies for one last campaign, hits .265/30hrs. I was really praying we could skip that. I just gone done b*tching about the Rivera and Jeter's tours.

Pete Abraham @peteabe 14s14 seconds ago David Ortiz said his post-retirement plans will include TV and he hopes a role with the #RedSox. My guess is that's more along the lines of what Yaz, Dewey, and others do in spring training than an active one like Varitek's. TV I would also guess is less NESN in-studio and more Pedro in-studio during the playoffs.

And here's a story in the NY Daily News about how the Yankees shouldn't honor Big Papi because he flipped his bat, David Price hated him before he was a teammate, and the leaked PED bullcrap (which has been admirably discussed on another thread here). And of course he was no Mariano or Jeter. And then there's the whole response to the Marathon bombing and willing the team to the 2013 WS win, ignored. It's true he didn't pitch, Papi has the same joyful love of the game that Rivera displayed. Now if only Papi hadn't insisted on playing first base after it was obvious to all that he couldn't handle the position anymore.....oh wait...... www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/yankees-honoring-david-ortiz-feels-forced-unnecessary-article-1.2807375NY Daily News, classless to the end, just like most of their fans

There is a prophesy that failing to honour big papi will result in his spirit coming back to haunt your playoff hopes.
