Like him as a minor league depth guy. More Castillo insurance.

Definitely a solid move. I wonder if he has any opt outs.
If not, he'll provide some needed OF depth.

He's well into the decline phase of his career (especially in terms of his defense, which has fallen off a cliff the last two years) and is not much more than a replacement-level player at this point, so I'm not too excited. That said, he's probably still better than Brennan Boesch and won't be taking playing time from anyone worth worrying about, which makes this a solid depth move.

Love the move. Hanley and David back home. I just read that David has an opt-out at end of ST, but a $100,000. bonus if he stays around 'til a second opt-out in June. Keeps him in the game, gives OF depth to the Red Sox, and a mentor in Pawtucket, andaybe a transition into coaching if he decides to hang them up in a year or two.

Solid move by the Sox. Unless Castillo or one of the other OF are hurt, the odds are Murphy won't be around come June. He's not what he once was but he should be plenty good enough to hang around on some major league team's bench and that's what will most likely happen. But as it stands, the Red Sox can certainly use him, a LH bat who can hit righties and play LF, and provide useful depth.

Welcome back Murphy. Glad to have another home grown back home. Murphy, Hanley, Butler, Mendez. A hopeful trend. Now for Rizzo and Anibal Sanchez, lol.

I was wondering why the Red Sox didn't add minor league OF depth. He makes a good platoon partner with Young.

I was wondering why the Red Sox didn't add minor league OF depth. He makes a good platoon partner with Young. My thought also. If Castillo turns up lame again or doesn't hit, I can think of worse platoons than Murph and Young (or Murph and Castillo). As was said, he definitely is not the same defensive outfielder he once was (once was OK in center), but he should be able to handle left in Fenway. Solid depth move. I like it. Not surprised of the opt-outs, but I would hope he will stick around until June in AAA.

Yeah, the Young/Murphy platoon now seems to be plan B in case Castillo or, let's be honest here, Bradley don't work out. I know Bradley seems the safer bet of the two, but we've seen that he has the capacity to suck. Not that I think that'd happen, but if for whatever reason he's the one who goes down, you can shift Betts to CF, Castillo to RF, and Young/Murphy is in LF.
Frankly, that's probably the backup plan for injuries as well.

Wonder if Manny Delcarmen has a few AAA innings left in him. #Seadogs2005 Man, MDC had a sweet fastball, he came along right around the time I started following Red Sox prospects as a whole. All we'd need is to get Kelly Shoppach and The Cla back as well and it's all good (:

Alex Speier @alexspeier 13m13 minutes ago Murphy said he has a 3/27 opt-out but notes that he didn't sign with the Red Sox with the intention of changing teams.

Taking a page out of the David Price book I see. Opt outs are apparently like pre-nubs. You're not planning on getting divorced, but it's good to have.

Probably one of those things where if he destroys the baseball in ST games and some team is desperate and gets word to his agent they'll put him in the starting lineup on opening day, he'll opt out.

He kind of burned his bridges on the way out in 2012.

Will he be starting the season on the 60 day DL? And would that give Murphy an opportunity to make the team out of spring training?

I think Workman is pretty far down the list for making the 25 man roster so I don't think that will be a factor. And they don't really need Murphy unless there is an injury to an outfielder. Holt, Shaw and Young are pretty much locks, so that leaves Castillo as the only possible guy who Murphy could take the spot from, which I guess is possible. Seems unlikely though.

I wonder if the injury to Brennan Boesch has any ramifications on keeping Murphy. After him, it's Brentz (who has looked awful this spring). I know we have depth on the ML club, it just gets real thin in a hurry in Pawt.

I think Murphy and Young as a platoon in left might be better than Rusney. Rusney struggles getting the ball out of the infield unless he gets it in the hole and if it is true he is struggling with 93 MPH+ fastballs that is going to show up way worse for us in the future.
Murphy career splits are good plus his (30+ yr old) last 4 yr splits look ok at around .265+ and about .320+ obp, if we split that with what Young will look like it will be better than what Rusney puts up and with Rusney in Pawtucket on an option the Sox would be better off seems like right now.
