I think Murphy and Young as a platoon in left might be better than Rusney. Rusney struggles getting the ball out of the infield unless he gets it in the hole and if it is true he is struggling with 93 MPH+ fastballs that is going to show up way worse for us in the future. Murphy career splits are good plus his (30+ yr old) last 4 yr splits look ok at around .265+ and about .320+ obp, if we split that with what Young will look like it will be better than what Rusney puts up and with Rusney in Pawtucket on an option the Sox would be better off seems like right now. Sounds like a neat solution in theory but in practice I think Murphy would expect some assurance of stability before he agrees to play in 2016. He's not going to play a month and a half to warm the seat for Rusney.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought there was something else that baseball players do. I have a vague memory of leather, rather than wood, being involved. Any help? Rank of Rusney Castillo in Defensive Runs Saved/Inning, 2014-2015, of 132 MLB OFers with 700+ innings played: 3rd.
Rank of David Murphy: 125th.

Yeah, while I have numerous concerns regarding Castillo's hitting (but still some hope that he can adjust to higher velocity), his defense in LF has been absolutely outstanding. Even if he only puts up a replacement-level offensive line, his defense would make him an average overall contributor. And really, he needs to play not only for the Sox to figure out exactly who he is, but also to see if he has any trade value. FWIW, Cespedes took 3 years to adjust his approach.

Murphy didn't look that great in LF today and did have a bat where kept fouling off pitches but you could just feel a strikeout coming. And it did. Can't see him making this team.

It blows my mind how he had hard time finding a team and had to settle for a team like Sox were he had to know chances were slim he'd make team to start year. Would be awesome if we could stick him in minors for depth, but I understand his thinking. Just think this guy could help like 10-15 teams and it would be a waste for him to retire cause so many teams are just not trying to compete and don't want him to help them win games.

I just don't get the hype for a guy who is basically a platoon replacement level player. He's nice minor league depth, but that's it.

I just don't get the hype for a guy who is basically a platoon replacement level player. He's nice minor league depth, but that's it. He's a victim of the failure to expand rosters as a counterbalance to the glut of good relievers. There are two or three fewer guys on an MLB bench than there used to be. Every team in the NL can use him as a pinch-hitter, but apparently, none wanted to use a roster space on a guy who they didn't feel could still play the OF. If I were him, I would opt out and have my agent try to find an NL club that looks like they might be able to use him if they have an injury to the current 4th / 5th OFer. There might not be a team that fits that description, though: enough positional versatility on the existing bench to be able to carry a guy who is just a PH and last-resort fielder, no one in AAA who looks like a good extra OFer. The irony, of course, is that we fit that description. Brentz is the only OFer on option, and Holt can play everywhere. If we were an NL club and Ortiz didn't exist, Murphy would actually be a very good choice for his roster spot. But AL clubs just don't pinch-hit enough to carry a guy like him. If we have an OF injury, they'll call up Marrero or Hernandez and Holt will become primarily a reserve OFer for the interim.

It's a shame Boesch got hurt. I know he's not Ted Williams, just seemed like he had some good AB's. Don't remember how he did in the field. I'm sure we can pick up a 5th or 6th OF'er anytime during the season...David Dejesus types are all over the place.

We could probably get De Aza back I would think. I'm pretty sure the Mets only signed him because they thought they weren't re-signing Cespedes. I read a while back that the Mets would gladly give him away for salary relief.
