Kopech fractures hand in altercation with teammate

Yeah. Harder to believe now that the oxilofrine thing was really an honest mistake. No it doesn't. Not at all. I agree, apples & oranges.....A "punch" could have been anything from a semi playful 19 year old "scrap" to a MMA level brawl......I would think it's closer to the former.....this is not on the Jon Denny level. From everything we've all heard about this kid, I don't even see this as a "thing". Even young minor league players simply don't get into brawls.

Well, punching someone could technically have resulted in assault charges. You're stretching it a bit. If everyone who ever got into a scrap with an acquaintance got charged with assault there wouldn't be enough jails in the world to hold them all. It's also not a planet where I would consciously choose to hang out. Got to say that Hazen really impressed me with his response, though. Coming to you from the great Northwest I'm not stretching anything. Punching someone in the face can technically result in assault charges. Fairly common. Never said anything about prison time. That was your stretch.

Scott Lauber said this morning on twitter that Kopech is getting a 2nd opinion on his broken hand. Team still trying to determine the severity.
Would think if it's a simple fracture the one look would have been relatively conclusive, then again, that's just wild speculation. We'll see what they end up announcing in a few days.

If it's non-displaced/hairline they may be hoping to avoid a cast. With all of the $ on the line, a second opinion isn't strange or concerning at all.

Though maybe it was an aircast? Not sure.

There's also a fairly likely chance that he just went to a local clinic when his hand started bothering him. The Sox probably wanted him to see a specialist. There's also a reasonable chance that he didn't know it was broken for a few days. I did something eerily similar (broke a finger punching a baseball player) when I was in my thirties and I thought it was just bruised for 2 or 3 days.

Thought Bradford already saw him in a cast. Though maybe it was an aircast? Not sure. Could be an air cast or hard splint, particularly until they get a specialist opinion. Radiologist read on an X-Ray is pretty simple to get a second opinion on, but a sports med orthopedist is going to want to look at it as well (and will want to see him in person) to give his/her diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment plan. Probably no need for additional imaging (unless he has evidence for nerve or significant vascular injury or other soft tissue damage), although since cost is no object, the team may want further imaging done, too. My guess is that's it's an uncomplicated nondisplaced fracture that won't require surgery, at least based on the few reports I read. Still hoping it's 4/5 metacarpals and not 2 or 3. Probably won't matter, either way. His grip and flexibility are going to be pretty poor for a while even after it's healed, too.

The one thing this guarantees for me is that Kopech will most definitely be playing in the Arizona fall league this year and maybe even in the Venezuelan league after too.
The Sox can make up for lost innings that way. The Arizona fall league would provide a really good challenge for Kopech too.

There's like, lots of teeny weeny bones in them there hands. It's not like a broken arm where you look at one or two bones and go, "yup, there it is". There's displacements, and joints, and ligaments pulling bones apart, etc. It's complicated, so a second look by an orthopedist isn't a bad idea at all.

Guys this is good news. He is the next Kevin Brown and I think that's great!! Good. Then maybe the Sox can get some good years out of him and then send him to the Yankees and have him start Game 7 of the ALCS against the Red Sox.

“@mikesilvermanbb: Farrell: Michael Kopech (hand) looking at approx 3- to 6-week layoff. Still unclear if fracture non-displaced or will require pin. #punch”

The Sox can make up for lost innings that way. The Arizona fall league would provide a really good challenge for Kopech too. I disagree. Both of these are pretty unlikely unless he comes in and absolutely dominates High A - think 2015 Espinoza-like numbers. Then the AFL MIGHT be an option. But Puerto Rico (WAY more likely than VZ) is a bit steep for a High A guy as well. Foreign winter leagues are more for guys with Double-A experience. Kopech is almost certain to spend the year in High A, unless, again, he shoves. He'll go back to the Instructional League, which is fine. But you're not going to play him two levels above his head just to get him innings.

I guess his career is back on track. So that means he is playing in games by early May? That is good news and won't miss a ton of innings.

I think if Kopech pitches similarly to last year, only over 80-100 innings or so, they might try the AFL and even a winter league figuring he'll be in AA to start next year anyway. It might be unusual, but not shockingly so.

He'd only be a little less experienced than typical, not far less. Usually a pitcher sent there to start has at least some Double-A experience. But they sent Miguel Pena there in 2013, in his second full season, which he'd started in Salem and gotten 3 Portland starts, to make up innings, presumably from one of his suspensions. That said, he turned 23 that October. Kopech will be 20. The last time they sent a pitcher that young to AZ was Casey Kelly. Of course, that was also the last time they had a HS pitcher who was this good and needed innings. So I slowly find myself backing down and agreeing with you the longer this post goes. Lol.

Unless I've missed it, I'm surprised we haven't heard to what extent Kopech's injury will keep him out. If anyone has any info, I'd appreciate it.

The one difference is that Ben and Theo were the GM's of the team and DD is now in charge. Your way of thinking when it comes to past history is probably expired. DD tends to rush guys in every situation he's been a GM.

IIRC Kelly played SS in the AFL (and only on Tuesdays and Thursdays or something cause that's when callups were allowed to play... it was a bizarre rule that only lasted the one year I think). In my mind, Kopech has a chance to get there even if he doesn't pitch in AA this year, but he certainly would have to pitch well in his shortened stint at A+. More likely IMO, the Sox aren't going to reward him for his poor choices with a (basically) promotion. Instead, I'd like to see them pitch instructs and then go dominate some winter league where he can prove he has turned a corner off the field. The carrot would be a potential start to the season in AA in 2017.
